The Troubled Relationship Between Goldie Hawn And Her Ex-Husband Bill Hudson
Goldie Hawn seems to have love all figured out when she started seeing Kurt Russell back in the 1980s. The two have been together since then, with Russell stepping in as a father to Hawn's two children, Kate and Oliver Hudson. They also welcomed a son together, Wyatt Russell, three years into the relationship.
The lovebirds have been keeping the romance alive for decades, but what's interesting is they never considered tying the knot. "Marriage didn't work for either one of us," Hawn told Today, referring to her previous marriages with Gus Trikonis and Bill Hudson and Russell with Season Hubley. "I'm not saying that it wouldn't work again, but I didn't think that we really needed to get married. I mean, what marriage ended up being, in many ways, is big business." Not much is known about the "Cactus Flower" actor's previous marriages, but she reportedly revealed that her ex-husbands took issue with her success. "The basic problem was that the two men I fell in love with and married just could not cope with the pressure of having a wife who was more successful than they were," she dished (via Radar).
Hudson, however, had an entirely different point of view on the demise of their marriage. In an explosive interview, he claimed that the reason why it never worked out with Hawn was because she had been unfaithful.
Bill Hudson claims Goldie Hawn wanted an open marriage
According to Bill Hudson, Goldie Hawn's heart was not in it from the get-go. As noted by the Daily Mail, early on in their marriage, Hudson said there was already a glaring disconnect about what they both wanted. "I was consumed with love. I didn't think life could get any better. I had just married the woman I loved and I felt like the luckiest guy on Earth," he said of their "perfect" wedding day. "Then Goldie turned to me and whispered, 'Are you sure we did the right thing?'"
Hudson went on to claim that Hawn requested that they have an open marriage, and soon he discovered that the actor had "a series of devastating character flaws." He also said that while he had been loyal, she was the complete opposite. "I've always been a one-man woman. I wanted a family, a conventional life," the musician added. "I remember Goldie's dad Rut telling me, 'She needs a different man for each of her moods.'" The two divorced in 1980 after four years of marriage, which Hudson reportedly initiated.
Hawn, for her part, remained tightlipped about her relationship with Hudson, and it's likely because she never wanted their kids to think less of him. "The one thing that I learned from my mom is that no matter what you're feeling and no matter what, I never heard a bad word about my father.," their daughter, Kate Hudson, shared on the "Divorce Sucks!" podcast.
Bill Hudson's relationship with kids Kate and Oliver Hudson is also strained
Bill Hudson and Goldie Hawn's second child, Oliver Hudson, caused quite a stir when he joked about his estrangement from his father on Instagram. On Father's Day 2015, he shared a photo of them on his account, with the caption "Happy Abandonment Day...@katehudson." Hudson responded quite brashly, telling Daily Mail that he's effectively disowning Oliver and Kate. "I say to them now, 'I set you free.' I had five birth children and I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own," he said. "I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver's Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate."
In a previous interview, he claimed that he never abandoned them, and it was Hawn who barred him from spending time with his children. "Goldie went out of her way to make things difficult," he said. "She blocked me seeing my children. First Kate, then Oliver became distant. I fought for custody of the kids. Why would I do that if I didn't want to see them?"
The good news is they're all trying to rekindle their relationship now. "Well, we're trying right now. We've shot some texts back and forth," Oliver shared in a "Larry King Now" interview. "I had posted something that was darkly comedic, and it blew up into something, and actually, it helped us with our relationship... So now we're kind of keeping in touch."
