The 2018 BET Awards Red Carpet Ranked Best To Worst
Celebrities came togethe to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and minorities in the music, sports, television, and movie industries at the 18th BET Awards on June 24, 2018. Hosted by actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, the nominees all had their hearts set on taking home one of the event's most coveted awards. While we waited to see who would win in our favorite categories, we were definitely fixated on the night's best and worst-dressed entertainers.
Unlike other red carpet events, such as the Oscars and or the Emmys, attendees at the BET Awards typically leave their black ties and couture gowns at home, opting for fun and on-trend pieces instead. We saw it all — from jaw-dropping, dazzling dresses to the finest streetwear ensembles — and we also witnessed some looks that made us cringe. Whether these outfits were unflattering or simply inappropriate, they missed the mark and turned heads for all the wrong reasons.
Let's take another look at the 2018 BET Awards red carpet ranked best to worst.
Janelle Monae shows pride
We'll just go ahead and call singer and actress Janelle Monáe a show stopper because the entire red carpet came to a screeching halt when she made her presence known.
Her green Nicholas Jebran bodice, rainbow skirt, and conductor hat were a far cry from the usual black and white outfits she's favored at past events. The singer had a very good reason to ditch a muted palette and throw a heaping dose of color into her outfit. After defining herself as a "queer black woman in America" in Rolling Stone magazine in April 2018, her rainbow skirt was the perfect choice to celebrate the month of June being LGBT Pride Month. The "Tightrope" singer completed her look with an eye-catching, crystal-embellished bag and some sparkly Tiffany & Co. jewelry.
We'd like to second this Twitter user's commentary on Monáe look: @JanelleMonae I love you. Thank you for representing the LGBTQ community with respect and class." Amen to that.
T.I. went full-on dapper
T.I. decided to put all of the drama from his alleged cheating scandal on the back burner to enjoy a night of celebrating his peers in the entertainment industry. Although he wasn't nominated for an award this time around, he was there to present the award for the best new artist... while looking like a snack, might we add.
Before he could even take the stage to announce SZA as the ever-deserving winner, the rapper mesmerized everyone in attendance with his dapper, neutral-toned suit and button-down shirt. A pair of gold-rimmed glasses proved to be the perfect accessory to shield the artist's eyes from the blazing California sun. With an event as laidback as the BET awards, we were expecting the "Dead and Gone" artist to perhaps wear something casual from his A.K.O.O. clothing line, but kudos to him for donning this perfectly tailored suit instead.
Here comes the sun - also known as Regina Hall
Regina Hall showed up on the red carpet with her The Hate U Give co-star, Amandla Stenberg. While both ladies looked absolutely stunning, Hall was victorious when it came to being one of the best-dressed stars at the awards ceremony.
The actress stole the show in her strapless black and yellow top and flowy yellow skirt with tassel details. With each pose, twirl, and step, the embellishments on her skirt playfully swayed back and forth, leaving us in awe and putting everyone in a trance. To draw attention to her bare shoulders, the Girls Trip star wore her hair pulled back, and a bright pink lippie proved a striking contrast against her sun-inspired outfit.
We were having a hard time finding the right words to describe how breathtaking the veteran actress looked on the red carpet, so we looked to Twitter, of course: "Does @reginahall ever age?" Nope. At. All!
Amara La Negra brightened up the red carpet
She may be the woman behind her own ALN clothing line, but Miami-born Dominican singer Amara La Negra opted for her go-to designer, Valentino Omar, for the 2018 BET Awards. The singer and Love & Hip Hop Miami reality star turned the red carpet into a fashion runway by showing off a getup that looked more like a work of art.
Bright yellow fabric was constructed into a pantsuit/dress hybrid. One half of her bodice included a floral appliqué and peekaboo mesh at the neckline, while the other half had a long sleeve blazer that was cinched at the waist before jutting out at the hips, finishing off with a short train that gracefully glided down the red carpet.
The Afro-Latina singer wasn't nominated this year, but if they were to give out an award for best-dressed artist, she definitely would have come out on top!
Serayah Mcneill went for the gold
Singer and actress Serayah McNeill is one of those superstars who always hits it out the ballpark when she shows up at an event. The Empire actress can get away with wearing almost any outfit, thanks in part to her natural beauty and her strenuous gym sessions that keep her body in tip-top shape. With consistent workouts that focus on her core muscles, it was only right that she gave us a peek at her rock-hard abs on the red carpet, right?
The entertainer wore a two-piece, gold Alice McCall getup. The bodice featured delicate spaghetti straps and a semi-sweetheart neckline to accentuate her décolletage, while the skirt was constructed with yards of golden, tiered fabric that made her perfectly bronzed skin pop. She finished off her look with perfectly tousled hair and warm colors on her eyelids and lips.
Are you really shocked that we give this look a 10?
Sevyn Streeter looked pretty in purple
Sevyn Street has described her style as "sweet but street," while also revealing to The Knockturnal: "I do love to get girly I love to be sexy, put on a nice dress, and a pair of heels, with a red lip or a dark lip. I just love to dress up, I love being a woman."
The "I Like It" singer stayed true to her personal preference when she emerged at the event's Pantene Style Stage. We were immediately drawn to the intricate beading on her plum gown, from the designs on its bateau neckline to the shoulder embellishments. The dress also fit like a glove to accentuate her curves. The singer and songwriter opted to keep her hair simple by wearing it sleek and straight, and her minimal makeup allowed her dazzling dress to remain the focal point. With hardly any jewelry, aside from a pair of tiny earrings, a bracelet, and a cocktail ring, she dominated the pre-event festivities with her minimalist-meets-glam ensemble.
Amber Rose wore velvet in the California heat
When Amber Rose is invited to a major event, you never know which direction her look will take. She'll either show up in a full-body, snake print jumpsuit or an outfit covered in derogatory slurs. At the 2018 BET Awards, she decided to tone things down, opting for a midi-length dress with a flattering sweetheart neckline. Although we can appreciate that she embraced a more demure style choice, it's too bad she wore this perfect dress during the wrong season.
As guest after guest made mention of the scorching Los Angeles heat while making their way down the red carpet, we couldn't help but say a prayer for Rose. Her bulky platinum blonde wig probably raised her body temperature to the point of no return, but when coupled with her forest green velvet dress — Yes, you read that right. She wore velvet — during the first few days of summer, we don't know how she kept it together. Someone pass us a fan, please. We're sweating bullets just thinking about it!
Even though her Bryan Hearns dress wasn't the ideal choice and broke every fashion rule that says velvet in the summer is a huge no-no, we have to give Rose props for rocking her fashion faux pas without a care in the world. Werk, kween!
Dej Loaf's monochromatic mashup
We've grown to love Dej Loaf's red carpet style. The "Try Me" artist can rock gender-neutral pieces like it's nobody's business, and one of the characteristics that makes the Detroit-born artist so revered by her fans is her ability to switch up her style in the blink of an eye.
Unsurprisingly, she shocked her supporters once again when she graced the red carpet at the 2018 BET Awards. She decided on a rather interesting, all-pink outfit. The bright ensemble included a button-down, collared shirt, a pair of matching pants, and a piece of long, ankle-length fabric that was cinched at the waist and secured with a self-tie belt. We're usually all for a monochromatic look, but Loaf's outfit gave us pink overload. From her matching pink glasses to the bright pink tips of her platinum blonde bowl cut, we know she wanted to step outside of the box and try something new, but this look left a lot to be desired.
Tyra Banks' glittery jumpsuit raised eyebrows
Tyra Banks has sashayed down countless catwalks across the globe, wearing some of the most stylish clothes the fashion world has ever seen, but when it came to her style choice for the 2018 BET Awards, the America's Got Talent host went for a risky look that fell flat.
The "smize" connoisseur hit up the red carpet wearing a Stello jumpsuit that, sadly, wound up becoming one of the worst looks of the night. The glittery material of her one-piece was slightly off-putting. The beige color wasn't doing her any favors, and neither were the sheer, oversized bell sleeves. Though she likely intended to set the red carpet on fire with a chic style choice, Banks' piece just wasn't cutting it.
She wrapped up the night by teaching rap group Migos her favorite modeling poses, so although her outfit wasn't our favorite, at least she was rubbing elbows with hip-hop's elite while we were on the couch in footsie pajamas and a bowl of Ben & Jerry's. So jelly.
Blac Chyna decided that less is more
Blac Chyna never misses a chance to strut her stuff on the red carpet! Fresh off a breakup from rapper YBN Almighty Jay, the social media influencer gave off futuristic vibes in her gray and silver two-piece.
The former reality star wore a short 'do styled into finger waves and a Laurel DeWitt crochet dress that left little to the imagination. With every step she took down the red carpet, we were super paranoid that she may inadvertently flash the crowd and end up becoming the victim of an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction! Thankfully, she made it safely down the carpet with every piece of fringe still strategically covering her chest, and the buttons that held together her risqué skirt with thigh-high splits stayed perfectly clasped together. Hallelujah.
No one can pull off a barely-there outfit quite like Blac Chyna. However, her entire ensemble, right down to the extra-long sleeves that completely covered her hands, was a big blunder.
