Why Matthew McConaughey Thinks Woody Harrelson Might Actually Be His Brother
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are not just true detectives, they're true friends, too. They may not be as loud about their friendship compared to the likes of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, but the two are lifelong pals. The award-winning actors met on the set of "EdTV" back in the late 90s, with McConaughey noting that his memory of their meet-cute was quite murky because of alcohol. "There was tequila involved that night," he shared in a vlog featuring Harrelson. "It was a bit of an impression. A bit hazy. But we met one night and I always wanted to meet you." It looked like they hit it off then and there since, aside from starring in a few more projects together, their relationship blossomed into a solid bromance.
In an interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2019, Harrelson dished that they would make it a point to go on vacation with their families once in a while. "I take a 'friendship tour' pretty much every year. I thought about calling it a 'bender where I leech off my rich friends,' but I thought, 'No, you know — friendship tour, better,'" he quipped. "You just go, stay at their house, drink oblivious. Great."
But there might be another layer to their relationship, at least according to McConaughey. After a bit of sleuthing, he shared that he and his best pal might just be related by blood.
Matthew McConaughey's mom knew Woody Harrelson's dad
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson may be playing fictionalized versions of themselves in a show called "Brother from Another Mother," but McConaughey is half-convinced that Harrelson might really be his sibling. In an appearance on Kelly Ripa's podcast, "Let's Talk Off Camera," the "Interstellar" star revealed that his mom knew Harrelson's dad and that their relationship might have been on the intimate side.
"Where I start and where he [Harrelson] ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line," he explained to Ripa, adding that their families have always mistaken them for one another, especially in photos. What's more, on one of their "friendship tours," McConaughey's mom made the revelation that she'd known Harrelson's father. "My mom is there, and she says, 'Woody, I knew your dad,'" he recalled, claiming "it was a loaded K-N-E-W."
McConaughey and Harrelson then put on their detective caps, and after further inquiry, they found out that Harrelson's dad, a convicted hitman, was "on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce." The Texas natives also found places in the state where there could have been possibly a "'knew' moment." Still, McConaughey admitted he was not ready to escalate his theory and take a DNA test in case his father turned out to be someone else. "It's a little harder for me because he's asking me to take a chance to go, 'Wait a minute, you're trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?'"
Woody Harrelson supports Matthew McConaughey's theory
Even Woody Harrelson is not dismissing Matthew McConaughey's claim that they may be half-brothers. During an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," the "Now You See Me" actor admitted he thinks there's "some veracity" to his best friend's hypothesis. In fact, he's not closing his doors to taking a DNA test, but acknowledged that it may be tough to get McConaughey to say "alright, alright, alright."
"We want to go and do a test, but for him, it's a much more big deal," he continued. "I mean he feels like he is losing a father. But I'm like, no, you're gaining a different father and a brother." He also agreed that McConaughey's mother, who he calls "Ma Mac," might have been intimately linked to his dad since her revelation was "filled with innuendo." And, apparently, approximately nine months before McConaughey was born, his mom was on "a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father, Jim."
We may never find out whether or not Harrelson and McConaughey are brothers from another father, but at least we know that they are more than friends. According to Harrelson, McConaughey is "my weed guy."
