The 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards Red Carpet Ranked Best To Worst
At the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, a who's who of the rich and famous arrived at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. ready to celebrate the best entertainment of the year. Given that the big awards show was filmed June 16, in advance of its June 18 time slot, fans were able to snag a sneak peek into the event by watching their favorite stars walk the red carpet before the show's taping. And boy, did the celebs dress to impress.
But while some A-listers were showing off their fashion A-game, playing with dress shape and colors, others left a lot more to be desired. But no matter how classy or casual these entertainers may have looked, their ensembles deserve to be seen ... in a best to worst dressed list. Below are the stars that made jaws drop on the red carpet and those who made fans cringe.
Zendaya
Zendaya knows what she's doing: She knows what cuts and styles work for her and she works them, but unlike other fashionable stars, she's also not afraid to mix things up every now and then — like when she channeled Joan of Arc at the Met Gala in May 2018. For the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, Zendaya decided to play with shape, choosing to wear a brown leather dress with a structured umbrella-style skirt. "Lookin like a fine ass unwrapped, caramel filled Hershey's kiss," Zendaya said of her look on social media, sharing photos of her awards show style.
The Greatest Showman star paired the high-necked piece designed by August Getty with large gold Paula Mendoza earrings and a pair of brown Christian Louboutin pumps (via the Daily Mail). With her side part and slicked back hair, she sizzled on the red carpet and likely inspired fashionistas everywhere with her unexpected take on a red carpet ensemble.
Tiffany Haddish
Given that she was the host of the show, comedian Tiffany Haddish likely faced some intense pressure to step out on the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards red carpet looking her best. Fortunately for her — and for us — she did not disappoint. The Girls Trip star arrived at the event in a gorgeous strapless metallic number that was cinched at the waist. The silver Galia Lahav dress also featured a long, flowing tulle train (via Just Jared).
Haddish apparently had some pretty significant help getting ready for the event. While we're sure she would have stunned in anything she wore, the actress was professionally styled for the show by none other than Law Roach, a self-proclaimed "image architect" who has dressed the likes of Celine Dion and Zendaya, according to InStyle. It's no wonder Haddish looked so good at the event. With a pro stylist at her side, how could she have gone wrong?
Ashleigh Murray
Riverdale's Ashleigh Murray stunned on the red carpet, proving that a supporting character on a teen drama can easily make the best-dressed list. The beautiful actress, who plays Josie on the hit CW series, wore a breathtaking two-piece ensemble with intricate beaded embellishments. The look consisted of a fiery red strapless top and a semi-sheer, floor-length skirt that showed off the star's killer legs with a high slit. Murray kept the rest of her look simple, donning just a red pair of heels and wearing her hair down and natural. According to the Instagram page of Murray's stylist, Zadrian Smith, the red-hot two-piece was hand-beaded by Thai Nguyen Atelier.
Murray's Riverdale co-stars also looked amazing on the red carpet — notably Vanessa Morgan, who wore a sparkly deep-cut Michael Costello gown, and Madelaine Petsch, who rocked a baby pink Prada number. Bravo, Riverdale ladies. You seriously impressed us.
Yara Shahidi
Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi shook things up on the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards red carpet by forgoing a traditional dress and instead wearing a light blue suit designed by Tory Burch (via Just Jared Jr.). According to Shadidi's Instagram account, the suit was created custom just for her. The Harvard student let her suit shine on the carpet, keeping accessories simple by only donning a pair of tan Christian Louboutin heels and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.
The ice-blue ensemble, which featured white pinstripes, was certainly a refreshing choice, and it fit Shahidi perfectly. The blazer highlighted her slight shoulders and, due to its matching fabric belt, cinched her waist to complement her figure. The loose-fitting bottoms kept the look casual, while still making the actress look ready to get down to business. Shadidi played up the look with bold blue eye makeup and short curls. All in all, Shahidi was totally age-appropriate while still pushing the boundaries for how a young woman should present herself.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian is no stranger to the world of fashion. By now, we've lost count of how many magazine covers she has graced. Clearly, she knows what works for her and her body — with just a little help from her dear husband Kanye West, so it was no surprise that she'd show up to the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards looking fabulous. Kardashian donned a white faux fur strapless top with a long sequined Versace skirt, and she looked good doing it (via the Daily Mail).
What was a surprise, however, were her braids. While we love a good braided style, Kardashian has gotten in trouble for a similar hairdo in the past. In January 2018, she revealed that she'd gotten platinum blonde braids, calling them "Bo Derek braids." Once again, people were quick to call out Kardashian for her braids at the MTV Awards with many criticizing her for cultural appropriation (via Yahoo! Lifestyle).
One would think that Kardashian would have figured it out by now that cultural appropriation is a big no-no, but it certainly seems like this is one lesson she refuses to commit to memory. For that major error in judgement, she's landed as one of the worst dressed on our list.
Mandy Moore
Who doesn't love Mandy Moore? She sings, she acts, and she's usually right on the money when it comes to her personal style, but apparently everybody makes mistakes. At the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the This is Us star wore a body-hugging, long-sleeve mini-dress that quite literally sparkled on the red carpet. While we love some glitz at awards shows, this look was a big miss.
First off, the dress seemed too tight — honestly, it couldn't have been comfortable for Moore to wear throughout the night. Secondly, the style was just too severe for a lighthearted event like the MTV Awards. The silver, bejeweled number resembled chainmail, and, when paired with Moore's tight, slicked-back low ponytail and dark smokey eye, the entire look made it seem like Moore was gearing up for battle — a very fashionable battle.
This dress could have worked if Moore had perhaps allowed other parts of her ensemble to take a backseat to the Alberta Ferrett number (via Just Jared).
Alison Brie
Fact: Alison Brie is adorable, and she's an incredible actress. Having starred in everything from the clever comedy Community to the drama Mad Men, she's more than proved her worth in Hollywood. Unfortunately, she failed to wow fans on the red carpet with her Sci-fi Barbie ensemble.
Brie showed up to the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards in an unusual design by Sandy Liang (via Just Jared). She wore a long-sleeved black bodysuit with a sheer, checkered overlay, cinching her waist with a plain black belt. Likely in an effort to put all the focus on her interesting fashion choice, Brie pulled her hair back in a high ponytail, though she should have left her short hair down and wavy if she really wanted her outfit to stand out. Brie certainly did herself no favors by also wearing green eye shadow and light pink lipstick, which, in our opinion, is rarely a good combo.
Francia Raisa
We hate to do this to Francia Raisa. We really do. The girl's gone through a lot in the past year, including donating her kidney to best friend Selena Gomez, but Raisa's MTV Movie and TV look is inexcusable — especially since we know she must be capable of so much more.
Like her grown-ish co-star Yara Shahidi, Raisa opted to wear a cool two-piece ensemble, donning a black sequined jumpsuit that featured just one sleeve and a totally unnecessary ruffled detail. She only made things worse by throwing her hair up in a tight bun and adding some shiny rings.
Maybe Gomez can hook Raisa up with a new stylist or at least give her some fashion pointers. The "Back to You" singer usually has her style down pat — except for maybe that May 2018 Met Gala look, but let's not talk about that.
