Strange Things About Catelynn Lowell's Relationship
Out of all the Teen Mom OG stars, Tyler Baltierra and Catelynn Lowell are the only couple to date who are still together. Given the low statistics of teen parents working out and the pressures that can come with reality television, this fact is rather impressive. As strong as Lowell and Baltierra's relationship might seem, however, the couple has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years. Fame doesn't protect people from relationship issues, right? And it goes without saying that a lot of weird stuff can go down between a couple in ten plus years (yep, Lowell and Baltierra have been together since middle school), especially when MTV cameras are involved.
From odd antics on social media (name changes, NSFW photos, etc.) to the drama before their August 2015 wedding, there are many wacky moments to cover about these reality stars' long union. Here are all the strange things about Catelynn Lowell's relationship with Tyler Baltierra.
Tyler body shames Cate
If you've followed Catelynn Lowell's story over the years, you probably already know that she's struggled with self-esteem issues throughout her life and those challenges escalated shortly after she gave birth to her daughter, Nova, in January 2015. Lowell, who gained about 20 pounds within the first few months of her pregnancy, found it difficult to lose the weight — a battle that instilled a lot of self-doubt. Lowell was pragmatic about her weight loss journey. She knew dropping the pounds would take some time, but Tyler Baltierra apparently thought Lowell should get fit ASAP. During a conversation at lunch about Lowell potentially joining Weight Watchers, Baltierra interrupts to point out the supposedly large size of his wife's quesadilla. When Lowell dismisses Baltierra's concerns (Let the girl enjoy her quesadilla, dude) he responds with a biting comment. "Obviously, I don't want no heifer for a wife," he tells her (via an August 2016 sneak peek of Teen Mom OG).
Unsurprisingly, Baltierra received a lot of flak for his bizarre and offensive remarks. Things got so bad, in fact, that he eventually apologized. "Currently in therapy to work on my delivery of messages & opinions," he tweeted in August 2016. "Yes I know I'm a prick but I admit it instead of defend it." Well, at least the guy knows when he's wrong.
They argue about adoption rights
When Lowell and Baltierra placed their birth daughter, Carly, up for adoption in May 2009, the two were on the same page about the situation. Both were happy with Carly's adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis, and their open adoption agreements. Unfortunately, the good vibes came to a screeching halt in April 2015, when an episode of Teen Mom OG showcased an intense feud between Lowell and Baltierra and Carly's adoptive parents.
Apparently, Brandon and Theresa expressed frustration that Baltierra continued to share photos of Carly, despite the fact that the couple clearly asked him not to. Things got even more complicated when Baltierra refused to accept Teresa and Brandon's argument that his photos put Carly's privacy at risk. "It just pisses me off," he tells Brandon and Teresa (via Cafe Mom), asserting that if they don't want to raise Carly around cameras, they "should never have picked us!"
As for Lowell, she didn't agree with Baltierra's position. "If the only thing we can't do is post a damn picture, who cares? As long as I have a relationship with her, I don't give a s**t about anything else," she says on the episode. We find it sad and rather odd that Baltierra would put Lowell in such a stressful position.
Those awkward family ties
One of the oddest things about Catelynn Lowell's relationship is that her mom, April Brockmiller, was once married to Tyler Baltierra's dad, Butch Baltierra. Yep, we don't even know where to start with this awkward info. However, it's important to note that Tyler and Catelynn got together before April and Butch traded vows, so it's not like the two were step-siblings who fell in love — that would have been trés weird. Instead, April and Butch were introduced to one another via their kids and decided to tie the knot in 2009. They were together during filming of Catelynn's 16 & Pregnant episode.
Unfortunately, April and Butch's relationship was anything but smooth. From violent fights to issues with drug addiction, the pair's union seemed doomed from the start. In November 2013, April filed for divorce from Butch while he was in prison. The good news for Tyler and Caitelynn is that this breakup means they are no longer step-siblings. Talk about a major relief.
She stirs the pot on social media
Although Catelynn Lowell likes to lash out at fans for creating so-called rumors about her life, it's true that she plays a key role in the drama. Want proof? Look no further than her odd antics on social media. In May 2018, the reality star must have known she'd cause a stir when she changed her Instagram name from "Catelynn Baltierra" back to "Catelynn Lowell." The surprising move sparked a frenzy among fans who theorized that Lowell and Tyler Baltierra were through.
A few weeks after the random name change, Lowell took to Instagram to post a sarcastic message to fans. "But we are getting a divorce," she captioned a lovey-dovey photo with Baltierra. "#nothingcanstopus." Clearly, Lowell finds the rumors about her marriage irritating, but why has she seemingly failed to grasp that her antics fuel the gossip. Sigh.
Catelynn is Tyler's chauffeur
Many couples at least occasionally take turns when it comes to driving duties, but that's doesn't seem to be the case in Lowell and Baltierra's relationship. A few eagle-eyed fans noticed the weird fact that Lowell frequently drives Baltierra around town. It seems he's never in the driver's seat. In a June 2017 Reddit thread discussing this issue, one fan wrote: "I might have missed it, but why is Catelynn the only one driving every time she & Tyler film a car scene this season?" Yep, it's clear fans want to get to the bottom of this curious situation. So, what's going on here? Is Baltierra afraid of driving? Did he have his license revoked? Does she enjoy being her husband's chauffeur?
The answer apparently boils down to traffic. Lowell eventually solved the mystery with a tweet: "@TylerBaltierra can't stand traffic and I actually love to drive lmao," she said. Case closed.
She posts NSFW pics of her man online
When you're in a longterm relationship, sometimes you spice things up with a risqué photo or two. Of course, the couples who do this typically keep their NSFW messages private. Not this duo. Catelynn Lowell has no problem sharing sexy shots of her husband with her millions of followers. In March 2018, she posted a pic of Tyler Baltierra in a towel to Twitter. "NuffSaid #myman #gethome #sexy @TylerBaltierra," she captioned the racy snap. Following her bold homage to her man, many folks took to the post's comments section to express their discomfort with the situation. "That is inappropriate for the world to see when your married. You're obviously looking for attention from others," one person penned.
Baltierra clearly doesn't mind the attention. "Better watch out Babe, people are SUPER sensitive these days with their conservative opinions about us flirting on social media lmao," he tweeted. "It must be very uncomfortable walking around everyday with that stick up their a**es. LOVE YOU!" Alrighty then.
He jokes about cheating
Cheating allegations — whether true or not — are no laughing matter. Unfortunately for Catelynn Lowell, her man has no qualms about downplaying rumors of marital discord with jokes. When a fan on Twitter wondered how many times Tyler Baltierra cheated on Lowell, he responded with a seemingly sarcastic tweet (via InTouch Weekly). "More times than I could count," he said. Uh, was that supposed to be funny?
If you ask viewers, the answer is no. "Why make a joke out of cheating, knowing that Catelynn is already feeling insecure and will most likely be upset by the comment?" one fan asked (via a Teen Mom OG Reddit). Another follower added, "I find Tyler's joke really distasteful..." To be fair, Lowell has also cracked jokes about the allegations. She once took to Instagram to make light of the situation, posting a shot of a delicious looking cocktail with the caption: "Whelp since he's out cheating." Touché.
She knew he was the one in eighth grade
You never know when love can strike — a sentiment Baltierra and Lowell know all too well, considering they met in middle school. Although there's nothing wrong with finding love early, it is a bit interesting that Lowell knew Baltierra was her "soulmate" at such a young age. Some might even find it strange that Lowell 100 percent "knew" Baltierra would be her husband one day.
Lowell recalled her strong intuition during a candid conversation at the Teen Mom OG reunion taping in April 2018, and to hear her tell it sounds oh so romantic. "I would say at about eighth grade. Like, I just knew that I wanted to be with him forever," she begins. "Actually in eighth grade he had a different girlfriend. But it was the weirdest s**t ... I would have dreams about him like coming and taking my hand. Like, really weird off the wall dreams and s**t. I'm like, 'one day I'm going to marry this kid. And, he might not know it, but he's f***ed. Because he's going to be my husband.'"
Hey, we guess you know when you know.
Their path to the altar included cold feet
When Baltierra and Lowell announced their engagement in August 2010, fans were thrilled. After all the drama the couple went through together (adoption, rocky home lives, reality TV), audiences wanted to celebrate these two forging lasting love. In 2011, Lowell tweeted the date of her big day: July 15th 2013, but just when we thought everything was settled, Baltierra threw viewers a curveball when he unexpectedly called off the wedding just months before he was supposed to say, "I do." The sad moment went down on an episode of VH1's Couples Therapy. Baltierra realizes he isn't "ready" to trade vows with Lowell. "You don't know if you don't want to be with me for the rest of your life?" Lowell asks him in the emotional clip (via VH1). "No, I don't know," he responds.
What's unsettling to us is that Baltierra changed his mind yet again about a year later, and Lowell didn't appear to question that change of heart. On Aug. 22, 2015, the couple wed in front of friends and family, so let's hope they figured it all out in private.
