Celebs Who Can't Stand Jennifer Aniston
From her iconic hairdos to her sensible diet of organic fruits and vegetables, fans find a lot to love about perennially perky actress Jennifer Aniston. Quite a few celebs are confirmed Aniston advocates, too. Former co-star Gerard Butler thinks she's a far better kisser than Angelina Jolie. Billy Bob Thornton has gone on the record to say his "lifelong goal" is becoming romantically entwined with the actress. Hell, even Brad Pitt's mom is allegedly still Team Aniston all these years after the breakup.
On the other hand, there are more than a few boldfaced names that have boldly proclaimed they can't stand the former Friends star. For example, Joan Rivers said Aniston's myriad rom-coms were calamitous cinematic catastrophes. Rupert Everett allegedly doesn't understand why she's so popular after so many box-office bombs. And there are quite a few more household names who think Aniston's life and career is perpetually stuck in second gear. So let's get acquainted with some of Aniston's most dismissive, disdainful detractors to date.
Perez Hilton was malignantly obsessed
As evidenced in a 2006 article published in The Guardian, Hollywood gossipmonger Perez Hilton used to have a particularly sharp axe to grind with Jennifer Aniston, who he'd artlessly nicknamed "MANiston." While explaining his disdain for the former Friends actress, Hilton sniped, "I just don't think she's a nice person." Nor, in his estimation, did Aniston have much of "a sense of humor." Those weren't his only grievances. Hilton claimed Aniston was only "marginally talented" and only "adequately good-looking," plus she didn't do "anything to make the world a better place." He was convinced she had zero interest in her fans, and absolutely no appreciation for "the media who made her successful." He summed up his blistering assessment thus: she was "just pretty much repulsive."
But ever since a chance encounter with his nemesis, Hilton has allegedly had a change of heart. During a 2011 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Aniston revealed she "ran into Perez Hilton in a garage." They stood staring at each other "like two deer caught in headlights" and then had a "lovely meeting." It reportedly helped Hilton realize he's writing about a real person. Talking to ABC News, Hilton revealed the impromptu powwow inspired him to cool it with all the "name calling, doodling inappropriate things on photos and outing celebrities."
Maybe Jennifer Aniston makes the world a better place, after all.
Joan Rivers was totally 'bored' by her
The late Joan Rivers made no secret of her disdain for Jennifer Aniston. In what could charitably be called a "characteristically candid" Us Weekly interview from 2011, the comedian effortlessly eviscerated the Horrible Bosses star in her inimitable style. "I would like to take Jennifer Aniston and put her hair over her f******g face," she revealed. "I'm so bored with her and her stupid movies. They're all the same! I don't know how they get financed!"
That was hardly the only time Rivers effectively turned the actress into mincemeat with her razor-sharp tongue. In 2011, Rivers allegedly told some Hollywood Life scribe what she didn't want to see on the Oscar red carpet that year, saying, "I don't want to see Jennifer Aniston say 'Boo hoo hoo — [Brad Pitt] left me!' Get the f**k over it!" Meanwhile, Joan Rivers Confidential, a book compiled by daughter Melissa Rivers and very close pal Scott Currie, immortalized an Aniston-razzing zinger from the archives (via Page Six). "Even if [Jennifer] does become pregnant, Angelina [Jolie] will get the baby," she said.
Kristen Stewart allegedly doesn't get the appeal
Was Kristen Stewart "hatin' on the ladiez" back in 2013? That's what Perez Hilton swore on a stack of iffy tabloids, and a certain Along Came Polly star was very much among the list of debased female celebrities. As evidence, Hilton cited a story from the National Enquirer, which itself claimed some sketchy source had a Stewart secret to tell. In other words, take this one with a grain of salt:
The salty star of Twilight was supposedly going "berserk," throwing some sort of celeb-bashing temper tantrum sparked by deep-seated jealousy and a potent sense of inadequacy. Side effects included "losing her grip on reality" and bad-mouthing the likes of fellow entertainers Katy Perry, Jennifer Lawrence, and our hapless hero. According to this anonymous showbiz snitch, Stewart had long been struggling with confidence issues and simply couldn't understand why Aniston managed to "hog the headlines every time with very little effort." You see, Stewart had allegedly been Team Jolie from the start. In fact, Stewart was supposedly confident that "if it wasn't for her bitter rivalry with Angelina, Jen would NOT be this famous these days at all." E tu, K-Stew?
Tim Gunn thinks she looks 'desperate'
Whenever a bee gets in his Irulea bonnet, modern-day dandy and Project Runway muse Tim Gunn embarks on a prickly, no-holds-barred snipe-fest in which seemingly no star is safe. Still, many were shocked when they heard what he said about our little ray of celluloid sunshine, Jennifer Aniston.
We don't know how to break this to you, so we'll just spit it out. In 2008, shortly after Aniston called it quits with mushy-mouthed musician John Mayer, Gunn turned to an OK! scribe at some elitist launch party for Tide and Downy Total Care... and then he said it: "Sometimes I think she has 'desperate character' written on her," Gunn deadpanned. He deigned to utter a few more poisonously pointed remarks about her fashion sense, saying, "The clothes we wear send a message. And I think that's the message — I don't think that's her intention though." Uh, no — probably not. And don't barbs like this help perpetuate the "Poor Jen" mythos?
Rupert Everett dissed her 'tasteless' career
Snooty English actor Rupert Everett rips into fellow thespians with the relish of someone eager to immolate his own career. In a 2008 UK Independent profile (via The Huffington Post), the Next Best Thing star haughtily claimed George Clooney wasn't "the brightest spark on the boulevard." In the same interview, he said Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Al Pacino, Woody Allen, and Diane Keaton were "just tragic parodies of their former selves." Well, at the very least, Jennifer Aniston finds herself in some very good company.
Like the marquee names listed above, Aniston was also on the receiving end of one of Everett's verbal tongue-lashings in 2010. Speaking to BBC Radio 4 (via the Daily Mail), Everett complained that "the powers that be" often play favorites and keep stars around well past their expiration date. "Jennifer Aniston will have one too many total flops," he said, "but she's still a member of that club." Then Everett casually lobbed one of his elegantly cruel bon mots at the actress, saying, "Like a star forming in the universe, things will swirl around her and it will suddenly solidify into another vital tasteless rom-com, a little glitter next to the Crab Nebula." Well, it's certainly evocative, isn't it?
Bill O'Reilly called her parenting views 'destructive to society'
While promoting her 2010 film The Switch, Jennifer Aniston told reporters at a press conference that "times have changed" when it comes to the way people think about family (via the The Telegraph). Referencing the film's plot — which centers around a bachelorette ISO a sperm donor — Aniston added that single motherhood is "quite beautiful, because there are children that don't have homes that have a home and can be loved. And that's extremely important."
Though she wasn't courting controversy, Aniston managed to rile TV news guy Bill O'Reilly, who subsequently railed against the comment on an episode of The O'Reilly Factor. He felt Aniston's message perpetuated a notion among young teens that "Hey, you don't need a guy. You don't need a dad." He dramatically claimed, "That is destructive to our society."
Though she's usually above commenting on this sort of thing, Aniston came forward to give O'Reilly a piece of her mind. "I never actually thought that my name and that name would ever be in one sentence," she told Good Morning America (via ABC News). She struck back at O'Reilly because this particular unpleasantry wasn't just about her. "People say things about me all the time," she lamented, "and you just go 'whatever.'" But O'Reilly's comments were more troubling to her because they insulted "women that are out there doing this on their own."
Joan Collins said she's not 'beautiful'
In 2010, Joan Collins spent the better part of a Daily Mail profile wondering where all the glamorous ladies of Hollywood had gone. As far as truly beautiful actresses were concerned, Collins could only name two: "There's Angelina Jolie and there's ... Angelina Jolie." Then, quite apropos of nothing, she broke out her cattiest claws and went to town on Aniston. "Jennifer Aniston is cute," she sniped, "but I wouldn't call her beautiful. She's no Ava [Gardner] or Lana [Turner]."
A ravenous E! News journo reached out to Aniston's people, no doubt angling for a good old-fashioned cat fight. Sadly, Aniston's reps went the mature route, telling the website Aniston was "aware" of the snippy comment and felt "no need to engage with that nonsense." Actually, engaging by saying you refuse to engage is a fairly soapy rejoinder, no?
After deftly ruffling all the feathers, Collins had a chance to redeem herself when E! News circled back to ask if she had any regrets, clearly looking for more blood. "Oh, well, no," she deliciously demurred. She swore she'd mentioned a bunch of other beautiful actresses — Catherine Zeta-Jones, Megan Fox, Scarlett Johansson — but they'd all been edited out of the article.
Did Elisabetta Canalis compare her to Iggy Pop?
In 2010, George Clooney's ex-girlfriend, Italian television presenter Elisabetta Canalis, got herself into a mild internet fracas when it appeared she'd unfavorably compared Jennifer Aniston's appearance to unbreakable rock icon Iggy Pop. "I'm browsing again through the pages of Rolling Stone," the incriminating tweet read (translated from the original Italian). "Iggy Pop on the cover looks exactly like Jennifer Aniston." Rude, right? Well, before we all fly to pieces over this, it's important to note Canalis quickly leapt to her own defense in a follow-up tweet, which loosely translated to: "I just read on Google that I tweeted something bad about J Aniston, let me be clear, it's a complete lie, I would never do that!"
Well, maybe it's not the completest lie, because it turns out she retweeted the Iggy Pop/Aniston comparison. Isn't retweeting as good as saying you personally endorse the message of said tweet? Perhaps not! According to Cosmopolitan, Canalis swore up and down that she "was at the beginning [of Twitter], not sure what 'retweeet' [sic] meant." She desperately needed the world to believe she was simply a Twitter newbie, and inadvertently stained Aniston's good name while learning the ropes. This begs the question: Is Canalis telling the truth, or could this be the ole' "vicariously insult Jen Aniston through a retweet and then pretend you don't know how Twitter works" routine? We'll leave it to you to decide.
Piers Morgan thinks she should 'get a grip'
In 2016, Jennifer Aniston participated in a live Q&A at the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy and subsequently became maudlin when asked if she ever happened to doubt herself. "We're all human beings at the end of the day," she observed, wiping tears from her eyes, voice quavering. Later, she added, "Don't punish yourself if you feel that."
Well, career blowhard Piers Morgan had a thing or two to say about this naked display of vulnerability. Morgan claimed on Good Morning Britain that Aniston was "self-wallowing" and needed to "get a grip" (via The Sun). From his prickly perch on the popular weekday morning program, Morgan also felt compelled to say, "Nobody forced [Aniston] to do naked magazine shoots," and scoldingly reminded her that "half the world is starving." In fact, Morgan may have something of an unpleasant fixation on Aniston. He also took time out of his hectic schedule to respond to a 2016 Huffington Post story written by Aniston which sharply criticizes the media. In the piece, she claimed to be "fed up" with all the body-shaming and scrutiny. Shortly after the piece was published, Morgan churned out a caustic op-ed for the Daily Mail, strongly advising Aniston to "dismount... that high horse."
In 2017, Aniston subsequently responded to that response, musing that "you're always going to have the Piers Morgans of the world contradicting something that comes from the heart and saying, 'You're a hypocrite.'"
John Mayer thinks she's a twit when it comes to Twitter
Is Jennifer Aniston a dyed-in-the-wool technophobe who lives in the fog of the past? John Mayer intimated as much in his notorious Playboy interview from 2010 (via Page Six). The outspoken musician accused his ex of being something of a Luddite, telling the magazine that "if Jennifer Aniston knows how to use BitTorrent, I'll eat my f*****g shoe." He claimed there was one very important difference between the two of them: While Mayer was busy tweeting up a storm and being very contemporary indeed, Aniston was allegedly keeping away from all the technological advances of our time. "The brunt of her success came before TMZ and Twitter," he added, making her sound like yesterday's recycled BlackBerry. "I think she's still hoping it goes back to 1998."
Though Mayer is clearly an advocate for bleeping and blooping to your heart's content, he claimed Aniston "saw my involvement in technology as courting distraction. And I always said, 'These are the new rules.'" Perhaps most stingingly, Mayer made a point to bring up their age difference (Aniston had just turned 41 at the time). According to The Associated Press (via NewsOK), Mayer said cryptically, "I can't change the fact that I need to be 32."
Jay Mohr says Aniston made him cry
In 2010, Elle asked actor Jay Mohr to describe his "most awkward interaction with a female celebrity." Mohr coyly concocted a blind item that involved a certain leading lady who'd been very "unhappy" to learn he'd be playing her love interest. Upon learning the news, this mystery diva reportedly yelled, "You've got to be kidding me!" — right to his face. Her subsequent behavior led Mohr to regularly "go to my mom's house and cry." Asked if the actress happened to be Jennifer Aniston — who played his love interest in the 1997 film Picture Perfect — Mohr said, "I will never, ever answer that."
Well, on his Mohr Stories podcast, Mohr did answer that. He claimed Aniston pointed right at him on the first day of rehearsal and screamed: "Six guys they screen-test! SIX ... The one f*****g guy I hate, that's the guy they hire. HIM!" Mohr alleges she returned to the soundstage after using the restroom and immediately continued haranguing him: "SIX!" This apparently "went on the entire day" as Aniston kept bad-mouthing him to costar Illeana Douglas. To sum up, Mohr swears "Jennifer Aniston was so f*****g mean to me."
Regardless of what really happened on that Picture Perfect sound stage, Mohr has apparently never forgiven Aniston for the perceived slight. In 2016, Sports Illustrated asked what was "more satisfying:" kissing Jen Aniston or firing Tom Cruise's character in Jerry Maguire? Mohr answered, "Without question, firing Tom Cruise ...Tom Cruise is hotter."
