What Happened To Kyle Chrisley's Ex, Angela Johnson?
In 2016, the already large Chrisley family gained another member: Chloe Chrisley, Kyle Chrisley's biological daughter who had been legally adopted by his parents, Todd and Julie Chrisley.
While Kyle is still in the picture, he was the first to admit that he wasn't exactly the model father. His legal issues and struggle with addiction made it challenging for him to look after his own child, resulting in Todd and Julie stepping up to raise Chloe. "I haven't been the best dad to Chloe," Kyle wrote in a Facebook post in 2019. "I've had a problem with drugs, I've acted completely ridiculous and through all that, they [Todd and Julie] have stood by my side." And as it turns out, Chloe's biological mom, Angela Johnson, has not been a great parent, either. In the "Unlocked with Savannah Chrisley" podcast, she noted how Johnson pretty much neglected the child from the get-go. "This child came to us from her biological mother, and she had been starved half the time. She wasn't clean. She came to us one time with a burn on her chest and we had to take her to the pediatrician. All of these things were documented."
However, come December 2022, after Todd and Julie had been sentenced to serve years in prison, Johnson suddenly resurfaced and took steps to take back custody. Where was she all these years?
Angela Johnson lost custody of Chloe due to fraud
When Angela Johnson and Kyle Chrisley separated, Johnson still shared custody of Chloe Chrisley with Todd and Julie Chrisley. But she was adamant that Kyle should never be involved, as he allegedly hurt her physically when she was still pregnant with Chloe.
"He grabbed me and choked me when I was pregnant," she told Life & Style. "There was a time when he got mad at me and came at me with a knife while I was holding Chloe. He was talking about stabbing me, then threw a bottle of pills and hit me and Chloe right in the face with them." She also claimed that Kyle is only feigning interest when it came to parenting their child. "Kyle is saying he wants Chloe, but he's really after money." However, Kyle refuted it, saying, "She's a mental case. I don't want any money. I want my daughter."
But, come 2016, Johnson lost all rights to her daughter when she used her status as Chloe's mother to commit fraud. Real Mr. Housewife reported that she had been arrested after it was discovered that, even after losing custody, she was still claiming Chloe as a dependent in order to gain Medicaid benefits and accrue food stamps. At the time, the Chrisley family decided to sweep the issue under the rug as they already had custody of Chloe. "We have no knowledge of this and it doesn't affect us personally," they said.
Angela Johnson is trying to take Chloe back
After Todd and Julie Chrisley were convicted, Angela Johnson wasted no time trying to regain custody of Chloe Chrisley. Speaking with TMZ, she revealed that she was "in the process of getting some legal papers filed so I can go back to court and get Chloe back home." And while she was MIA for years, she claimed she was "talking to attorneys and we were trying to figure out which way to go about getting Chloe."
Todd, for his part, expressed frustration over Johnson's sudden reappearance. "It's ironic that her biological mother would come forward now, when she has not been in her life since 2015. Angela Johnson surrendered her parental rights on March of 2017, and we never heard from her again," Todd explained on the "Chrisley Confessions" podcast. He noted that Johnson "terminated her rights voluntarily" when she got in front of the judge and completely surrendered her rights as a parent. He even revealed that the Chrisley family tried offering financial support to Johnson, from providing her with a car and a condo, to tuition fees so she could finish nursing school, but Johnson apparently wasted all of it.
Even if Johnson managed to bring things to court, Chrisley family attorney Jessica Doyle told People that her efforts would be futile. "Todd and Julie Chrisley don't just have custody of Chloe. They are her legal parents through adoption," she said. "I have reviewed the public statements made by Angela Johnson. They are simply not legally correct or even valid."
