Jenna Bush Hager Got In Trouble With The Law While Living In The White House
Today, we know Jenna Bush Hager for gossiping with pal and co-star Hoda Kotb on the fourth hour of "Today," but growing up, most people simply knew her for being the daughter of President George W. Bush. The younger Bush served as president of the United States from 2001 through 2009, and before that, Jenna's grandfather, the elder George H.W. Bush, served as president from 1989 to 1993. So, that means Jenna and her sister, Barbara Bush Coyne, literally grew up around the White House seeing as they had both a father and a grandfather serve in office.
Jenna has spoken about being the daughter of such a well-known figure several times over the years, and there have been some highs and lows that come with the territory. In an interview with Good Housekeeping, Jenna explained that she and her sister wrote a letter to Sasha and Malia Obama with some words of encouragement and advice for living life in the White House as their father, Barack Obama, served as president. "When their dad became president, they were in first grade, and when our grandpa became president, we were in first grade. And then later, when they were leaving the White House, they were the same age that we were in our teens, and we just knew the scrutiny that could come with living as teenagers during that time," she explained, adding that when you're in the public eye, your freedoms get taken away, something she knows all too well.
Jenna Bush Hager had too much fun in college
Just because your dad is the president of the United States doesn't mean you can't get in trouble with the law. When their dad took office, there was a microscope on Jenna Bush Hager and her twin sister, Barbara Bush Coyne. According to the Daily Mail, Jenna told "Today" co-star Hoda Kotb about how she got in trouble for underage drinking while attending the University of Texas. In 2001, Jenna had two run-ins with the law — one for being in possession of alcohol as a minor and another for trying to purchase alcohol at a restaurant with Barbara using a fake ID. These two occasions both came within five weeks of one another, by the way.
"The fact that we thought we could do that just speaks to how [our parents] were like, "Oh, you can be normal, it's OK,"' she told Kotb before revealing how her father reacted to the news. "When I called my dad to say, 'I'm really sorry ... I got this ticket for drinking underage.' He said, 'No, I'm sorry.' We did embarrass [our parents], but they never would say that," she recalled. "He said, 'I'm sorry, I told you [that] you can be normal, and you can't. You can't order margaritas."'
At the end of the day, Jenna got a slap on the wrist and had to pay a fine and do some community service — but at least she didn't go to jail.
Jenna Bush Hager's husband, Henry Hager, also got in trouble when he was younger
Jenna Bush Hager may have gotten in trouble for underage drinking, but that was not the only time there was drama in her family during her father's presidency. On an episode of "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," the mother of three opened up about how her now-husband, Henry Hager, had to sneak out of the White House when they were dating. "My parents were traveling, and I was staying there," Jenna explained. "We'd gone out to the bars and, like all relationships do, it reached a certain level. Henry said he woke up and he looked around, and he was, like, 'Aaaaaaaah!' Because he worked for my dad."
Henry tried to book it out of the building in his clothes from the night before without being noticed. He joked that it was just as hard to get out of the White House as it was to get in. "The people that guard the White House aren't looking to see who's running (inside). Usually, people don't run out," Jenna joked. But, now that she and Henry are married, she said she can only look back and laugh at that funny moment — which her parents found out about when she told the story.
We've got to admire her for sharing funny stories about her past without shame because it takes a certain type of person to be able to do that!
