The 2018 Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet Ranked Best To Worst

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards aired live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 20, and the top stars of the music world — as well as a few from television and movies too, of course — brought their style A-game to the red carpet. Some celebrities aimed to drop jaws with sheer or nude-colored gowns, while others went bold in attempts to wow music fans with unusual or colorful designs. But, unfortunately, not everyone hit the mark with their award show ensemble.

We've gathered the best and the worst dressed celebs of the night. And while some of these famous faces may have been aiming to snag a trophy at the Billboard Music Awards, they probably should have paid a little more attention to their wardrobe choices. After this red carpet roundup, we have a feeling some stars are going to be saying goodbye to their current stylists.

Hailey Baldwin

Though not a singer or musician of any kind, model Hailey Baldwin totally rocked the 2018 Billboard Music Awards red carpet, casting all other award show attendees in her shadow. Method Man's Drop the Mic co-host donned a custom gold Alexander Vaultier design, which featured a deep neckline, gathering around the waist, and long sleeves (via Just Jared). She paired the look with Jimmy Choo heels and jewelry by Jennifer Fisher. Baldwin framed her face with her wavy blonde locks, and she chose to go for natural-looking makeup, which made her look effortlessly cool.

Not only did Baldwin no doubt steal everyone's attention when she walked the Billboard Music Awards red carpet but we bet that her potential boyfriend, singer Shawn Mendes, had trouble keeping his eyes off of her. As Seventeen magazine noted, Baldwin and Mendes arrived at the high-profile event separately, despite having attended the 2018 Met Gala weeks earlier. Even though Mendes has referred to Baldwin as a "friend," we feel confident assuming that he may have seriously reconsidered his stance on their relationship after seeing her breathtaking Billboard red carpet look.

Ciara

While she may not have released a new record in the year prior, Ciara attended the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and seriously stunned, proving that she'll forever be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to red carpet style. The singer, whose full name is Ciara Princess Harris, showed off her goodies in a gorgeous sheer number with a halter neck, a high leg slit, and an open back (via Marie Claire). The sparkly gown also featured strategic layering, doubling up on fabric around her more private areas and revealing some skin near her midriff and thighs. Considering the glitziness of the dress, Ciara made the right call by keeping her accessories simple — wearing only a matching pair of stilettos and what appears to be her huge engagement ring (Nice job, Russell!). As for beauty, Ciara wore her hair down and curly and painted her nails a light baby pink shade.

Padma Lakshmi

Padma Lakshmi knows how to make a statement. At the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, the model, Iron Chef host, and cookbook author donned a gorgeous silver gown that perfectly showed off her amazing figure — just look at that high slit! As noted by the Daily Mail, Lakshmi's ensemble appeared to consist of a metallic corset piece, over which shimmery fabric fell, secured at one shoulder and at the right hip. According to Lakshmi's Instagram account, her gown was designed by The Blonds, a New York City-based apparel brand founded in 2007.

Opting to forego jewelry completely (with a dress that shiny, who needs a necklace?), she paired the look with a pair of silver heels. She kept her hair parted in the middle and styled straight.

Lakshmi's look was perfect for her appearance on stage with Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen, with whom she presented the Billboard Chart Achievement Award to former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello.

Jennifer Lopez

We can always count on Jennifer Lopez to rock a daring look at an awards show. Jenny from the block arrived at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards red carpet ready to wow. Despite the 90-degree weather in Las Vegas, Lopez wore a monochrome burgundy velvet and leather outfit with thigh-high boots. And somehow, she didn't even sweat, which we're taking as proof that she's clearly not human. Come on — how else can you explain why she always looks amazing?

As reported by E! News, Lopez's long-sleeved ensemble, which featured an asymmetrical skirt as well as a partially unbuttoned crocodile print shirt with a matching bralette, was designed by Roberto Cavalli. Her footwear, on the other hand, was Casadei.

Of course, Lopez's red carpet outfit wasn't her only look of the night. She later changed into a sparkly silver bustier and a pair of white wide-legged pants for her performance of her single "Dinero" with DJ Khaled.

Taylor Swift

Oh, Taylor Swift! How we've missed seeing you at awards shows! The "Look What You've Made Me Do" singer took a break from her Reputation tour to make her first red carpet appearance in two years. Her last awards show event was at the 64th Annual BMI Pop Awards in May 2016, as noted by People magazine. For her return to the Billboard Music Awards, Swift donned a light pink gown featuring, as was popular that night, a high leg slit. The beautiful gown boasted one partial sleeve as well as a bodice embellished with both intricate silver detailing and pastel-hued feathers. Swift accessorized her look with minimalist jewelry, including what appears to be a gold snake ring from her tour merchandise. Despite the serpentine bling, Swift, with her blonde hair in a sweet updo, looked every bit a princess as her 2009 "Love Story" character.

Swift, who received a total of five nominations at the Billboard Music Awards, delivered an emotional speech after winning Top Female Artist. "You guys, when I started writing songs when I was 12, I started writing songs because it made me feel more understood," Swift said (via People). "When I was making Reputation, this album, for a while there I was feeling really misunderstood by a lot of people. So I want to say to the fans, thank you for continuing to show up. ... thank you for making me feel understood again." Aw, Taylor!

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa, we love you and we love your music, but we just don't love this look. The "IDGAF" singer walked the 2018 Billboard Music Awards red carpet in a bold purple number. The gown, which featured puffed shoulders and a large midsection bow, gave us serious '80s vibes — and no one wants to be reminded of that dark era of fashion history. While we liked the shimmery hue on Lipa, as well as her makeup and accessories, we just can't excuse this outfit.

Fortunately, Lipa made up for her style faux pas by singing her hit single "New Rules" during the awards show, trading in her less-than-killer gown for a violet robe — a sultry nod to the loungewear Lipa wore in her music video for the song. As if that weren't enough, she and her dancers strutted their stuff on stage around a giant flamingo — another reference to the video. And really, who doesn't love those silly pink birds?

Alyson Stoner

Oh boy. Alyson Stoner must have been on the same wavelength as Dua Lipa when she chose to wear this purple number. But, rather than the former Disney Channel darling's outfit bearing puffy sleeves, her look featured, well, barely any coverage — at least, on her chest. Stoner wore a shiny violet House of CB suit with Liliana Footwear shoes and jewelry by Cirari (via Just Jared Jr.). But Stoner apparently forgot to pack a blouse — or even a bralette — with her on her trip to Las Vegas for the awards show because the only thing covering her, ahem, ladies was an unbuttoned blazer. Girl must have used strategic taping to prevent herself from having any major wardrobe malfunctions.

So why the risqué fashion move? Well, Stoner has a new single to promote — "Who Do You Love." Need more proof? Take a look at the former Missy Elliott video star's nails. As she shared in an Instagram post, her manicure reads, "#WDYL." That's definitely one way to get the internet buzzing about your projects.

Bebe Rexha

Surely, all eyes were on "Meant to Be" singer Bebe Rexha when she arrive on the red carpet at the Billboard Music Awards — but not for good reason. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native chose a rather odd gown to wear to the awards show. Rexha's black velvet dress was designed by Christian Siriano and featured tulle from her shoulders to the ends of her long sleeves that resembled feathers or spikes or somehow both at once (via Teen Vogue). Though the gown covered much of Rexha, it did boast a high leg slit, but it was honestly hard to spot with all that fabric in the way.

For what the outfit was, Rexha did as best as she could with her hair and accessories. With her blonde hair styled in a top knot, she wore black jewelry to match her dress.

Rexha wasn't the only star to opt for a dark look on the red carpet, however. Both "Love So Soft" artist Kelly Clarkson, who served as host of the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, and America's Next Top Model creator Tyra Banks tried their hand at gothic-glam ensembles at the event.

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera arrived at the Billboard Music Awards ready to remind people that she's still around — and that she's still as gorgeous and talented as she'd always been. But unfortunately, her choice in red carpet wear did little to impress. Aguilera wore a black pinstriped gown that was clearly inspired by a classic men's suit but with a strange kimono twist, as it wrapped around in the front (via E! News). The dress was cinched at the waist by a large matching belt and it featured a long train. Despite the belt, Aguilera's figure was completely masked by the heavy fabric, with only her neck and shoulders visible.

Aguilera, whose subtle hair and makeup choices were totally on point, could have done with a much better dress — one that hugged her body even the slightest bit. Or, at the very least, one that people didn't have to cautiously step around. Trains are a hazard.

Z LaLa

Though stars like Alyson Stoner and Christina Aguilera made our 2018 Billboard Music Awards worst dressed list, their looks were super stylish compared to Z LaLa's award show ensemble. The Armenian-American singer, who's known for her outlandish wardrobe choices, donned more of a costume than a red carpet dress at one of the biggest nights in music. LaLa's Billboard gown appeared to be constructed of strips of gold fabric that wrapped around her body like a sea of snakes. The number was designed by Croatian fashion brand ZIGMAN, according to LaLa's Instagram page. However, it's unclear if it was the brand or the singer who thought up this, um, extravagant look, as LaLa captioned a photo of her gown, "Thank you for bringing my vision to life."

As if her gown wasn't extra enough, she also piled her hair on top of her head in a beehive-like updo that'd make even Marge Simpson cringe. Yikes.
