Celeb Couples You Wouldn't Want To Share The Room With
With the eyes of the world on them, celebrities have had to endure the ups and downs that come with fame and fortune. It's the price to pay when you achieve a certain level of success. Nothing is "personal" anymore — and everything is a matter of public opinion. Pop culture has become obsessed with diving into the personal lives of the rich and famous, from what they do when no one's watching to who they are dating and hooking up with.
While there are many celebrity couples we have championed, there are just as many we have hated. The harsh spotlight of Hollywood is unforgiving, and many relationships have ended in bitter public divorces, he-said-she-said spats, and cringe-worthy moments that make you wonder where it all went wrong. From Heidi and Spencer Pratt to Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, we're breaking down the celeb couples that you wouldn't want to share a room with.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West brought the controversy
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's relationship was riddled with controversy — which seems to go hand in hand with anything associated with the rapper (That flopped 2020 Presidential campaign, anyone?) The two began dating in 2012 and went on to wed in 2014, but ultimately, they filed for divorce in 2021.
Fans were less than thrilled to discover just how controlling West was over his ex-wife's wardrobe during their time together. The SKIMS founder spoke at a business summit in 2018 (via Daily Mail) and admitted the Yeezy founder brought her to tears cleaning out her closest when they got together. "I probably had 250 pairs of shoes and when we were done cleaning it out, I had two pairs left and I cried," Kardashian admitted. The KKW Beauty founder also revealed that her ex-husband had harsh words for the first outfit she styled post-divorce. "He told me my career's over and then he showed me a picture of Marge Simpson wearing something similar," she admitted on an episode of "The Kardashians."
Their relationship was highly contested in the midst of the 2016 and 2020 Presidential elections, where West was seen openly supporting President Trump. Kardashian admitted in an interview with The Free Press that she begged her husband not to wear a MAGA hat during an SNL performance at the time. "And now looking back, I think, why should he take that off if that's what he believes in? Why can't he wear that on TV? Half of the country voted for him, so clearly other people like him."
America hated Speidi
Heidi and Spencer Pratt could quite possibly go down as one of the most hated reality television couples in history. It was love in the club for the former "The Hills" stars, who met each other while out partying in Los Angeles in 2006. Their relationship spanned six seasons on the MTV show, complete with a lot of hate from their co-stars — including Heidi's former bestie Lauren Conrad. Ultimately Spencer was the nail in the coffin of Montag and Conrad's friendship, (but it did give us Conrad's famous "You know what you did!" line.) "Speidi" continued to see each other despite the haters, and went on to elope in Mexico in 2008.
Heidi and Spencer have faced their fair share of tabloid catastrophes over the years. The couple admitted to the Daily Beast that they went through the trenches to try and recuperate cash flow after they squandered their fortune. Pratt admitted he never broke up with Heidi, despite rumors of a brief separation in 2010. "What we learned is: You can be too famous," revealing he sold a story that they split because he spent "a million dollars on suits and fancy clothes" to keep up their television persona.
The tabloids had a field day with "Speidi" at the height of their reality TV career, criticizing Heidi for undergoing 10 plastic surgeries in one day. Spencer was happy to play his part as the dubbed villain on the series, admitting to Us Weekly he faked blowout fights with Heidi because he was "hell-bent on being the bad-guy character on the show."
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' rocky relationship
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes took the world by surprise when their decade-long relationship ended in an abrupt divorce. The two Hollywood stars made their first public debut as a couple in 2005, and the "Top Gun" actor professed his love for her just a month later. While on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," he told the host, "I'm in love. I'm in love and it's one of those things where you want to be cool, like, 'Yeah I like her' ... that's not how I feel." He continued, "I wanted to meet this woman and I met her and she's extraordinary."
The pair got engaged that same year and revealed that Holmes was pregnant with their first child. After giving birth to their daughter Suri, they said "I Do" to their whirlwind romance, tying the knot in Italy in 2006. Their relationship was criticized due to Cruise's involvement in the Church of Scientology — which Holmes later converted to. The actor made waves when his indoctrination video was released, featuring himself saying, "We are the way to happiness. We can bring peace and unite cultures."
However, Holmes ultimately didn't hold those same beliefs as she filed for divorce from Cruise in 2012, allegedly due to her not wanting her daughter to be involved in the religion. As per HuffPost, the actor admitted as much during a deposition involving his defamation case against Bauer Media. When asked if Holmes wanted to protect Suri from Scientology, Cruise responded, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."
Beyoncé dissed her husband on her album
One of the music industry's most powerful couples to date is no doubt Beyoncé and Jay Z. The two artists have gone on to have record-breaking careers, take home dozens of Grammys (Beyoncé has the most of any artist ever), and have three children together. While there's no doubt about their success, not everyone has supported the couple — (Beyoncé's "Lemonade" album, anyone?)
Beyoncé and Jay-Z hit it off in 2001 when they decided to move their friendship to the next level. The two artists went on to collaborate on music together, releasing hits like "03 Bonnie & Clyde," and "Crazy In Love." The pair went on to wed in 2008 in a secret wedding ceremony. Fast forward to 2016, and fans got wind of Beyoncé's visual album "Lemonade" which dropped some shocking cheating allegations about her man.
Her track "Sorry" shed light on cracks in their marriage with lyrics like, "He only want me when I'm not there/He better call Becky with the good hair." Jay Z addressed the cheating rumors in an interview with The New York Times, saying, "So, even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect. In my case, like, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity." Though all the drama is in the past now, it wasn't before Video footage of Jay Z and Beyoncé's sister Solange fighting in an elevator was released following the affair.
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton unlikely coupling
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton's whirlwind romance had viewers turning their heads — but not everybody was happy about the couple. The duo met in 2014 when the "Rich Girl" singer joined the cast of NBC's "The Voice." Shortly after, Shelton called it quits with his then-wife and fellow musician Miranda Lambert. Stefani ended things with her then-husband Gavin Rossdale around the same time, causing fans to question the timeline of their relationship. Though it's all speculation — it does seem the pair had an undeniable connection upon co-starring on the show. The two officially announced their romance in 2015 and went on to wed in 2021.
While their chemistry is undeniable on stage, some fans say it doesn't translate when they perform together. Not everyone enjoyed their duet together at the 2020 Grammys — which had Shelton's ex-wife in the audience. "Nope sorry I didn't personally like it the vibes were missing something. I think it would have been better with just Blake honestly," one user tweeted. Others were more supportive but likened Stefani's performance to a questionable choice for her brand. "I have no sh*t to talk about Gwen Stefani putting out a trash ballad with her big stubbly country ham. You don't do something like that unless you're stupid happy, like this abomination is confirmation that she's very in love. May we all find someone we'd set our brand on fire for," another hilariously wrote.
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's PDA-filled romance
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have gone on to be one of Hollywood's pairings that's stood the test of time. The actors were smitten with each other upon meeting, with Shepard telling People, "That's the best personality I've ever seen on a woman. I need to be around it." The actors have gone on to work together, appearing in "When In Rome" and "Hit & Run" alongside each other. They took to the Grammys red carpet to announce they were engaged in 2010 and tied the knot in 2013 after the birth of their first child Lincoln.
Bell sparked up a heated discussion with her followers when she posted a quote to her Instagram that read, "If two people always agree, it's a sign that at least one of them isn't thinking critically — or speaking candidly." She wrote alongside it, "I disagree with my husband on practically everything. And because we are always respectful, it's very stimulating." While some fans agreed, others had different opinions. "Well... maybe two people can agree most of the time especially if they have the same education level, beliefs and convictions," one user wrote.
Shepard opened up about their marriage to Us Weekly, saying, "We are opposites and it has taken a tremendous amount of work and therapy for us to coexist." Bell also confirmed that notion, telling People that they go to couples therapy when needed. "Every couple of years, we're like, 'We're being very antagonistic towards each other,' and we don't want that," she admitted.
Justin and Hailey Bieber's war with Selena Gomez fans
Justin and Hailey Bieber had been friends for nearly a decade before anything became romantic between the pair. The "Baby" artist met the model in 2009 backstage at the "Today" show, when they were just teenagers. Speculation about a potential romance between the two stars started brewing in 2015 when Justin was spotted out to dinner with Hailey while on a break from his long-time on-and-off partner Selena Gomez. They dated casually in 2016, before briefly breaking up and getting back together in 2018, just months after he called it quits with Gomez for good.
As Nicki Minaj said, "Gotta keep an eye out for Selener," the same is true for her fans. Gomez's fans have jumped to her defense after a social media war between her and Hailey sparked over TikTok videos. Gomez posted a video of her over-laminated eyebrows and Kylie Jenner posted her own TikTok shortly after, including a screenshot of her FaceTime with Hailey and a caption that wrote, "this was an accident ?????" Hailey also seemingly took a stab at Gomez when she posted a video alongside her friends singing, "I'm not saying she deserved it, but I'm saying God's timing is always right."
Bieber took a hit for the feud while performing onstage at Rolling Loud, with fans chanting, "F**k Hailey!" amidst the social media feud. The singer recently celebrated his birthday in March 2023, but fans quickly noticed he didn't "like" the special birthday tribute his wife posted about him to her Instagram.
Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde's movie matchup
The tabloids had a lot to say about Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles as a couple — and not all of it was kind. The two stars met in 2020 after Wilde cast the "Watermelon Sugar" artist in "Don't Worry Darling," a 2022 psychological thriller film that she directed. At the time, Wilde was still engaged to her then-fiancé Jason Sudeikis, which fueled speculation that the actor cheated on him with Styles while filming the movie. Wilde addressed the rumors in an interview with Vanity Fair, saying, "The complete horses**t idea that I left Jason for Harry is completely inaccurate," she said, adding, "Our relationship was over long before I met Harry. Like any relationship that ends, it doesn't end overnight." In what seemed to be a slap in the face, Sudeikis infamously served his ex-wife custody papers while she was onstage at CinemaCon in 2022.
Wilde and Styles received plenty of public backlash during their two-year relationship, from fans mocking the way the "Babylon" actor danced at her then-boyfriend's shows to the age difference between the pair. Florence Pugh, who starred as the lead in the film, seemingly cast shade at her co-star's romance when she skipped the presser for the film at the Venice Film Festival in 2022. A source told Page Six, "Flo seeing Olivia and Harry all over each other on set did not go down well as Olivia was still with Jason when she first hooked up with Harry." The pair ultimately called it quits in 2022, but insiders say they remain on good terms.
Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson's messy relationship
The women of the Kardashian-Jenner clan haven't had the best of luck with men — but no relationship was quite as tumultuous as the one between Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson. After years of cheating scandals on Thompson's part, fans were less than pleased with Kardashian taking him back during their relationship. The pair first met in 2016 after being set up on a blind date and went public with their relationship a few months later.
Things went sour in 2018 after TMZ released footage of the NBA star cheating on the Good American founder while she was pregnant with their first child. They ultimately chose to stick together through the drama, but their troubles were far from over. The following year, Kylie Jenner's then-best friend Jordyn Woods revealed that Thompson kissed her while she was leaving a party. The couple broke up following the incident but decided to give it another shot in 2020. The next year, outlets reported that the NBA star stepped out on Kardashian yet again when he was caught entering a bedroom with multiple women at a house party in Bel Air.
The two reconciled that same year but kept it under wraps from the public. Their relationship came to a shocking end in 2022, however, when it was revealed Thompson fathered a child with another woman. Not long after, Kardashian announced she was expecting a child via surrogate with Thompson. With the chance of reconciliation long gone, the two continue to co-parent their two children together.
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly work out their trust issues
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly's relationship certainly turned heads — and not just because of all of their PDA-packed outings together. The "Jennifer's Body" star found love with the artist just a few short months after she called it quits with her then-husband Brian Austin Green, with whom she shares her three children. The duo met in 2021 while co-starring in the film "Midnight in the Switchgrass." The chemistry between the pair was undeniable, with Fox going on to star as the leading lady in her beau's "Bloody Valentine" music video that same year. The pair announced their engagement in 2022, but plans of a wedding may be on hold due to infidelity rumors.
The rumor mill began to buzz when the "Transformers" actor took to Instagram to post a since-deleted photo with lyrics from Beyonce's "Lemonade" album that read, "You can taste the dishonesty/ it's all over your breath." The internet speculated on their relationship status after fans noticed Fox had also unfollowed her boyfriend on social media. As of the time of writing, Fox has deleted all her photos from her Instagram page.
It's unclear whether 2023 will see wedding bells ring for the pair amidst rumors of their rift. The pair has since been spotted leaving a marriage counseling office together. "They have very strong feelings for one another, so their emotions often come out in intense ways. They are working together with the goal of trying to mend things and move forward together," an insider told ET.
Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris's 60-year age gap
The unlikely pairing of Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner had a lot of people talking, especially when it came to the 60-year age gap that separated the pair. While they say love is love, fans had a lot of questions as to how the dynamics of their relationship worked. Hefner, who passed away at 91 years old in 2017, has been married three times and has been famous for having multiple girlfriends, but Harris has undoubtedly been the bunny to stick around the longest. The former Playmate met the magazine mogul in 2008 at a party and later married him in 2012, sticking by his side until his passing.
Since Hefner's death, many former Playmates and girlfriends of Hefner have come out against him and accused him of abuse and sexual assault. The documentary "Secrets of Playboy" shed light on the ins and outs of the mansion, including tons of allegations of sexual exploitation brought forth by several women. Harris has since come out to join the many women against Hefner and his former empire. She took to Instagram to announce she was planning to write a memoir about her story. "I will share how power, greed, narcissism, and a girl's quest to feel loved, powerful, important, and have a sense of belonging led her down a dangerous path. More than anything, I longed for freedom from what I found myself in. And after experiencing the grueling opposite for ten years, I finally found it," she wrote.
If you or anyone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, help is available. Visit the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network website or contact RAINN's National Helpline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline's tumultuous marriage
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline's whirlwind romance shocked the world and rocked the tabloids after the pair met in 2004. After meeting at a nightclub, they quickly fell in love. The pair tied the knot just a few months later, surprising their friends and family in a spontaneous private ceremony.
The "Oops I Did It Again" artist went on to welcome two sons with Federline in 2005 and 2006. In a move that shocked fans, Speared filed for divorce shortly after her son Jayden was born. The split and the custody battle that followed dominated the news cycle, along with speculation over the singer's mental health as she checked into a rehab facility in 2007. The Grammy-winning artist's public struggles (i.e. her infamous shaved-head incident) led to Federline being awarded temporary full custody of their two sons that same year. In 2008, Spears was put under a highly-contested conservatorship for 13 years.
With the conservatorship terminated in 2021, Spears is taking control of her life back — and she's involved in a public feud with her ex-husband. Federline spoke out about his ex-wife and her relationship with her sons in an interview with ITV News, saying at the time that Jayden and Sean had not been seeing their mom. Spears clapped back on an Instagram Story, writing, "It saddens me to hear that my ex-husband has decided to discuss the relationship between me and my children ... As we all know, raising teenage boys is never easy for anyone" (via E! News).
