Jenny Slate Was Actually Still Married When She First Met Chris Evans

Whether you fell in love with him as the Marvel's Captain America or the knit-sweater villain in "Knives Out," at one point or another, nearly everyone has had a crush on the dashing Chris Evans. Many would do anything to have the chance to date the actor, but few people get the opportunity to call Evans their "beau." Comedian and actor Jenny Slate, however, was one such lucky lady who experienced what it was like to date Evans.

The two actors dated on and off for about a year, and their relationship had them feeling as though they were in giddy middle school teenagers, according to Entertainment Tonight. Slate shared, "It's kind of like I got my dream 7th-grade boyfriend." While Evans may have been everyone's dream boyfriend, the actor only had eyes for Slate. The "Avengers" star has always been private about his love life, but something about the comedian changed that. In 2016, Evans even shared a sweet tweet supporting his girlfriend's work in the movie "The Secret Life of Pets." He said, "The Secret Life of Pets was fantastic! @jennyslate was a personal favorite..." There's truly nothing more swoon-worthy than a supportive boyfriend as Evans was all in on Slate. Their admiration for one another made it clear that the couple was completely infatuated and their meet-cute has a funny quirk, as Slate was still married when she first crossed paths with Evans.

Jenny Slate dated Chris Evans immediately following her divorce

Jenny Slate and Chris Evans had no idea their friendship would blossom into a relationship, especially because the comedian was married when they first met.

According to Vulture, the two actors crossed paths in 2016 when they did a chemistry read for the film "Gifted." At the time, Slate had already been married to film editor Dean Fleischer-Camp for four years. However, Slate and Evans' chemistry was undeniable, and the "Captain America" actor knew the two would have a great relationship, whatever it looked like. Slate recalled how she felt after the audition to Vulture, saying, "I remember him saying to me, 'You're going to be one of my closest friends.' I was just like, 'Man, I f***ing hope this isn't a lie, because I'm going to be devastated if this guy isn't my friend.'" Luckily for Slate, she landed the role, which led to more hangouts with Evans.

The actor shared with the outlet that, at this point, her marriage was already "dissolving." By May 2016, she and Fleischer-Camp had officially called it quits, per Us Weekly. Not long after, Evans confessed his feelings for his co-star, and she couldn't believe it. She told Vulture, "Eventually, when it was like, Oh, you have these feelings for me? I was looking around like, Is this a prank?" But it wasn't a prank, and the two ended up dating for nearly one year.

Jenny Slates was over love after Chris Evans breakup

Chris Evans and Jenny Slate's romance was filled with lots of highs and lows as they had a whirlwind relationship. Not long after their split in 2017, Slate and the "Avengers" actor became more than friends as they tried to give their relationship a go later that year, but split again by March 2018, per Us Weekly. After her relationship with Evans officially ended, Slate was discouraged about finding love again.

The actor revealed to Elle that she did not want to have to keep looking for love. She said, "The way we are told to search for love is fairly inhumane and unworkable... Unfortunately, you don't get to choose when it's over, unless you truly are shutting down." Luckily Slate didn't entirely give up on love because not long after her breakup with Evans, the comedian found the love of her life. Slate began dating Ben Shattuck, and in 2020, the couple officially tied the knot. Although she had been in some loving relationships, like the one with Evans, none has ever been as powerful as her love with Shattuck. She said, "He brings the best out of me. That best isn't my most sexually viable or whatever, but more like, wow, I am interested in the thing that was created between us and I wouldn't say it to anyone but him, and I never have before." So, despite the heartbreak along the way, Slate finally found her other half.
