Who Is Jenny Slate's Husband, Ben Shattuck?
Jenny Slate is known for her well-known characters and time on "Saturday Night Live" and her hilarious stint as Mona Lisa on "Parks & Recreation." Without her, we wouldn't have one-half of the iconic duo who sing the now-viral "Don't Be Suspicious," basically Jean-Ralphio (Ben Schwartz) and Mona Lisa Saperstein's theme song. But Slate also most famously dated Chris Evans, which might have been one of her more noteworthy moments as well. She dated the MCU star of and on from 2016 until 2018 when they called it quits for good. But love wasn't ruined for Slate. In fact, she found her current husband, Ben Shattuck, through mutual friends in early 2018 and started talking via email six months later. They then made the Sundance Film Festival the location of their first public appearance together in January 2019, and the rest is history.
The two got engaged in September 2019 and married on New Year's Eve 2021(going into 2022). Between all of that, Slate also gave birth to their daughter at the end of 2020. "I have this faith now — I do — that I can have this beautiful relationship with this man that I deeply love," Slate said on the "Unstyled" podcast about Shattuck. "That I can have a full life, that I can live on this peninsula in Massachusetts where I live right now, and have my career, and that I can feel beauty in myself in so many ways." But who is Slate's husband? We've got you covered.
Jenny Slate's husband, Ben Shattuck, is an accomplished writer and painter
Probably unsurprising to you, Jenny Slate's husband Ben Shattuck is not a famous actor, nor an actor at all. Shattuck is an author and a painter, as well as a gallery curator for his mother's gallery, the Dedee Shattuck Gallery. He graduated from Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning and subsequently attended the University of Iowa's Iowa Writers' Workshop. He even went on to teach fiction at the college, along with teaching fiction again at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He also lived in Norway to study painting at one point.
So yeah, Shattuck is a very worldly, accomplished guy. Not only that, he's written books and short stories, including his memoir, "Six Walks." Not to mention his short story "History of Sound," is being made into a movie starring "The Crown" and " Normal People" darlings, Josh O'Connor and Paul Mescal. The story is described as a "gay romance" about two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (O'Connor), who want to travel across America during World War I and document "the lives, voices, and music of their countrymen."
Jenny Slate and her husband are both from Massachusetts
While Jenny Slate met her husband, Ben Shattuck, through mutual friends, their upbringing makes sense as to why they got so close and connected on so many things. They're both from Massachusetts and chose to move there together, which is where they live as of this writing. As Slate's quote said above, being able to live in a low-key town you love while also not having to give up your career is a sweet deal. "I live in a small town in Massachusetts (Dartmouth) and I have very bad WiFi at my house. Really bad," Jenny said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In June 2022. "So I use the internet at my husband's general store. He and his brother bought the oldest general store in the United States."
Outside of the Massachusetts connection, Slate told Glamour that Shattuck is "a well-adjusted feminist man," which gives him a few extra points and makes him a great partner. "There are a lot of dudes out there that think they're allies because they're just not as gross as they used to be," she said. "That's not good enough. And moreover, they're sensitive about how gross they've been able to be in their privilege and patriarchy. I don't feel like anybody deserves an award for not being completely repulsive. I'm fortunate that my partner isn't that way." Their daughter, Ida Lupine (her middle name is their favorite flower), is definitely a lucky gal as well.
