What Really Happened Between Lil Wayne And Solange?

This article includes mention of attempted suicide.

Lil Wayne and Solange have famously collaborated on several occasions — but were these two only ever colleagues, or was there something more to their dynamic?

As longtime fans of both Lil Wayne and Solange will know, both of them appeared in the 2004 music video for Destiny's Child's "Soldier." Lil Wayne featured as a rapper on the track, while a then-pregnant Solange made an appearance with her first husband, Daniel Smith. A few years later, they collaborated again — though this time, she was relatively newly divorced and Lil Wayne was featured as a rapper on her song, "Champagnechroniknightcap." Years later, they worked together again on Solange's 2016 song, "Mad" – which, per Global News, was the first time he publicly addressed his childhood suicide attempt

It's pretty clear these two are willing to get vulnerable together, then, but our question remains. Did anything romantic ever happen between them? Well, a few years ago, most people would have shrugged that they simply worked together, numerous times. After all, they've hardly ever been spotted out and about together or suggested that they were an item. However, back in 2020, Lil Bow Wow said something that had many questioning just that. According to him, these two were, at one point, romantically involved. So, just what do we know about their uber-secretive history?

Lil Bow Wow let the cat out of the bag that no one expected

For years, there's been little to suggest that Solange and Lil Wayne had anything going on between them. That is, until 2020. Enter real-time social media platform Clubhouse, and one very talkative Lil Bow Wow.

During a live talk with fans on the platform, Lil Bow Wow mentioned in passing that Solange and Lil Wayne had, at one point, dated. Emphasis on mentioned in passing — because it seems as though he had no idea that the rest of us had, well, no idea. In fact, he went so far as saying that it was a well-known fact. Awks! While Lil Bow Wow didn't offer more details than the fact that they had dated, the damage was done. Taking to Twitter, hoards of fans joked about him releasing such a (previously) well-guarded secret. "Everyone knows Solange and Lil Wayne dated? I sure did not. Thanks Bow Wow," joked one. One user even questioned Bow Wow's credibility, writing, "Soon bow wow goin be tellin us Rihanna and 50 Cent was dating." And the award for the biggest foot-in-mouth moment went to ...

As for Solange and Lil Wayne themselves, neither stepped in to confirm or deny what was said. However, we're not exactly surprised about that.

... but further than that, we're still in the dark

Lil Bow Wow may have unwittingly revealed a bombshell with his Clubhouse revelations, but that's about all we've got on this former pairing. And, given Solange's penchant for privacy surrounding her personal life (a family trait, for sure), we're not exactly shocked. Case in point? When she confirmed she and her second husband, Alan Ferguson had separated, she told Instagram followers that she was only doing so in an effort to, "Protect the sacredness of my personal truth" (via People). She also quipped, "Tho it ain't nan no body's business."

As for Lil Wayne, he's stayed pretty mum about the entire situation, too. In fact, in an interview with Angie Martinez in 2006, the "Lollipop" rapper outright denied that anything had happened with them. In response to Martinez' questions about them being seen together at a party, he giggled that it was simply because, "She came to my party. That's it." However, he did say that he wasn't opposed to anything happening, or at least trying his luck. After all, he quipped, "She all that."

So, what really happened between Lil Wayne and Solange? Perhaps, at the time of Lil Wayne's interview, nothing. Or, maybe they did end up dating?. However, one thing we do know for sure is that something did happen. Thanks, Lil Bow Wow — we couldn't have known that without you!
