Why Evangeline Lilly And Dominic Monaghan's Relationship Ended In Disaster
Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan were one of the cutest couples of the 2000s. The two met on the set of "Lost" and began dating in 2004. Lilly and Monaghan were fiercely private about their relationship, refusing to talk about each other publicly. Monaghan reportedly asked Lilly to marry him in October 2007 and they were planning on a summer wedding in Hawaii, where "Lost" was filmed. Just like their relationship, the couple was allegedly planning a low-key ceremony during the show's hiatus. Unfortunately, Lilly and Monaghan broke up that same year. The two continued to work together until "Lost" ended in 2010, with both remaining tight-lipped about the demise of their relationship.
However, in 2013, Monaghan hinted at infidelity on Lilly's part. Responding to a tweet that read, "Evangeline looked unreal in the Hobbit, man oh man," the actor replied, "nah. I don't date cheaters." When a fan called him out for sharing a "personal" detail between him and Lilly, he responded, "It certainly felt personal when It happened yeah." Although that's all Monaghan shared at the time, almost a decade later, he revealed more details about why he and Lilly called it quits.
Dominic Monaghan's hard-partying ways caused Evangeline Lilly to look elsewhere
Evangeline Lilly was once the love of Dominic Monaghan's life, but their relationship crashed and burned. On Anna Faris' "Unqualified" podcast, he revealed that his "Lost" co-star was his biggest heartbreak. "I've only really got my heart broken once in my life. I was dating ... Evangeline Lilly, who, you know, has gone on to have a name all of her own ... I don't really know how she would explain the narrative, but from my point of view, it was probably the first time in my life that I was just kind of all in," he shared.
While Monaghan was dedicated to his role on "Lost," and his relationship with Lilly, he revealed that he would party hard on the weekends. "I would only consider it a weekend if I was drunk out of my mind on a Friday and Saturday night. I thought that was normal," he recalled. His excessive partying led Lilly to look elsewhere, which Monaghan only found out about when someone told him she was seeing another person. "Unfortunately, there was a bit of a crossover which was upsetting for me, and it exploded in my face in an awful way," Monaghan stated.
Monaghan decided to change his ways when two months into their breakup, he woke up surrounded by pills after a night of drinking and realized he could have accidentally overdosed. Despite going through one of the worst times of his life, Monaghan stated that he's grateful for the experience and the lessons it taught him.
Dominic Monaghan has mixed feelings about his Lost days
While Dominic Monaghan was known as the Hobbit cousin of Frodo Baggins in "Lord of the Rings," his portrayal of Charlie Pace in "Lost" skyrocketed his career. "'Lost' kind of caught fire and my character went on an interesting arc, which put me in a place where people were talking about that specific moment in that specific show," he told CBS. Monaghan revealed that he thought about going back to O'ahu after more than ten years since he's been on the island, but mused that it would "be like walking around a haunted house." He stated, "There's a lot of ghosts there and a lot of baggage there. I had a great time on that show, but I was in a relationship on that show, made friends on that show, fell out with people on that show, and consistently have friends from that show. It's not just a TV show for me, it was six years of my life."
Monaghan also revealed to People that he has never watched an episode of "Lost," despite playing Pace for six years. "I lived those things so completely, I don't need to repeat them to have the experience," he shared. Although the show ended in 2010, Monaghan shared that people will still come up to him and reference the show. However, he has long since moved on from the hit series and seems to now be at peace with how his relationship with Evangeline Lilly ended.
