The Real Reason Jonathan Scott And Jacinta Kuznetsov Split
Jonathan Scott and his identical twin brother, Drew Scott, have been making hearts swoon since their HGTV series Property Brothers premiered in 2011. Adoring fans who favored Jonathan, the perpetually single bachelor, were ultimately crushed when he took his relationship with a woman named Jacinta Kuznetsov public.
After meeting at a charity event in Fall 2015, the couple embarked on a whirlwind romance that seamlessly fused their separate lives into one, with the couple traveling the world together and Kuznetsov eventually working for the brother's production company.
To outward observers, their relationship appeared to be flourishing, and after Drew proposed to his long-time girlfriend, viewers assumed it was only a matter of time before Jonathan followed suit and put some bling on Kuznetsov's ring finger. But on April 6, 2018, he dropped a bombshell when he announced via an Instagram post that their relationship was over. Bummer.
They seemed to be so gleefully in love, so where did things go wrong? Here are some of the reasons Jonathan Scott broke up with Jacinta Kuznetsov.
A bumpy start
After meeting at a 2015 charity event, the famous contractor failed to seal the deal by asking Kuznetsov for her digits. This led him on a wild goose chase to track down the blonde beauty. He was finally able to relocate her through social media and proceeded to stalk her Instagram profile for a few months before officially asking her out on a date.
"I felt this overwhelming urge to learn everything about Jacinta, but I didn't want to delve too deep on a first date and come across as pushy. So I asked about her career and fished for any similarities," Jonathan told People magazine.
But there were no fireworks during that first outing, and they definitely weren't exchanging googly eyes either. Jonathan's tactic to bum rush Kuznetsov and dig for information caused her to blurt out, "Ugh! You ask the worst questions. Ask something interesting." Ouch.
Jonathan cut the night short and apologized for their horrible outing. He suggested they have a first date redux the following night, and surprisingly, Kuznetsov took him up on his offer. "I promised to drop the drama and she pledged to set aside the sass. It turned out to be the beginning of something truly special," he said.
Looking back on their rocky beginning, perhaps their failed first date was the universe's way of telling them to abort mission!
Moving in opposite directions
The home improvement guru blindsided his Instagram followers when he shared the news of his relationship's demise. The post included a photo of the then-couple on their trip to Kenya, and the caption read, in part: "When I met Jacinta in the fall of 2015, I met somebody kind and courageous and a champion for human/animal rights. We grew to respect each other fiercely and know that will remain unchanged for the rest of our lives." So what the heck went wrong?
Well, within that same Instagram caption, Jonathan also wrote, "Sometimes life takes you on unexpected paths and those paths aren't always in the same direction."
He ended his caption by ensuring his fans that there wasn't any "drama or negativity; no jealousy or hate. Not even sadness or sorrow," surrounding their separation. And it looked like Kuznetsov agreed with him, because she replied to his announcement via her Twitter account with praying hands and hearts emojis.
'They're not right together,' according to Drew
Aside from both of their insane good looks, this former couple had a lot of things in common, such as their love of adventure. "We'll take road trips, or I've set up scavenger hunts with all the things that I know she loves," Jonathan Scott told People magazine. He also revealed that they were both "so mischievous," and twin brother Drew Scott agreed. "If you ever see the two of them sitting there wiggling their eyebrows, something's about to happen."
However, after things went belly up, Drew seemed to change his tune. He went from jokingly praising their similarities to telling Us Weekly: "I mean, the main thing for him and Jacinta, they knew that they weren't right together. They're good people, but they're not right together."
Since Drew seems to be the twin that's being more forthright about the crumbling romance, we're going to need him to spill some more deets about Jonathan's changing status. We're all ears...
Full House
The bond that exists between identical twins Jonathan and Drew Scott has kept them attached at the hip, even as adults. They purchased a home together in Las Vegas, and after Drew met his fiancée, Linda Phan, she moved into the home with the twins. That seems a little unorthodox, but Phan appeared to be fine with it, telling People magazine, "People were always like, 'Isn't that weird?' But there's an ease to it," she said. Double your pleasure. Double your fun?
When Jonathan began dating Kuznetsov, she moved into the home, as well. Yes, two couples under one roof. That didn't last long. Drew and Phan eventually bought a house in Los Angeles, leaving Scott and Kuznetsov in the Las Vegas home all alone before they decided to relocate to Toronto.
Drew talked to People about breaking away from his brother. "Since we've been in the same city for so long, it's going to be weird," he said, "but we're always together for work."
Now that Scott's relationship has crashed and burned, it makes us wonder if being in a separate country away from his twin caused additional stress that ultimately strained his love life.
Business and pleasure don't always mix
There's a reason why many people are opposed to starting a relationship with a colleague or a business partner. It's because the lines between business and pleasure can become blurred and spell doom for even the most solid relationships. Despite this universal notion, Kuznetsov left her job as the producer of a Canadian music radio talk show, according to AOL, to work at the twins' production company, Scott Brothers Entertainment. She assumed the title of development producer and worked alongside Drew's fiancée, Linda Phan, who works as the company's creative director.
So, did working together and living together cause a rift in this romance? We're not sure, but we wouldn't be surprised if that contributed to the problem. Sadly, things are probably going to be real awkward at the office now that their relationship is kaput.
Is he still healing from his failed marriage?
Even though he's been portrayed on TV as a lifelong bachelor, Jonathan Scott is actually a divorcé. He met his ex-wife, a waitress and model named Kelsey, in 2007, and the young lovers got hitched right away. "She wanted to get married on 07/07/07... so it wasn't something that naturally happened," he told People magazine.
The lucky significance behind their wedding date didn't correlate to a happy marriage. Things went "downhill" after they moved from Canada to Las Vegas in 2008, and the couple reportedly grew apart. "I've never shared much about the impact divorce had on me, because why put something so sad out there?" Jonathan wrote in his and Drew's memoir, It Takes Two: Our Story (via Country Living). "The pain ended up outlasting the marriage. The split isn't something I dwell on anymore, but for one too-long, too-dark period of my life, that's practically all I did. It shook me right to the core."
Even though the traumatic experience is in his rear view mirror, we wouldn't be surprised if his divorce made him hesitate to take his relationship with Kuznetsov to the next level.
Marriage wasn't on his radar
Many assumed wedding bells would be ringing, especially after Jonathan whisked Kuznetsov away to Maui for Christmas 2016. However, when they returned from Hawaii, there was no sparkly engagement ring in sight. Phooey.
Jonathan was able to put his fans' minds at ease in August 2017 when he told People magazine, "We definitely want to get married and have kids, but we're just finding joy in our relationship and still learning about each other as well." Okay, fair enough.
But he really pulled a fast one on us just three months later while speaking with USA Today. When talking about his brother's May 2018 nuptials, Scott was asked if he had also fallen victim to the wedding bug. "Nope," he answered with a laugh. "Jacinta and I have only been dating for a year and a half."
Let's recap: he went from "definitely" wanting to get married to later saying it was too soon for them to say "I do." It sounds like someone was suffering from a severe case of cold feet.
Better off as friends
While Jonathan Scott believed life was taking them down different paths, Jacinta Kuznetsov decided to throw her two cents into the mix and share her thoughts on why their relationship imploded. Through a caption posted to her Instagram account (via People magazine), the passionate human rights activist wrote, in part: "Life is funny and sometimes chapters change and this one has. We have deep love and respect for one another but have gone separate ways."
It's clear that the once-smitten lovers still have a lot of adoration for one another, but Kuznetsov's caption also implied that they were better off keeping their relationship platonic. "We will continue to be [a part] of each others lives as friends, and never stop planning what greatness we can create in this world."
Drew confirmed to Us Weekly that his brother and Kuznetsov are "still friends" following their split.
From lovers to friends is a transition that not many people can navigate successfully, but whatever the reasons for their breakup, we certainly wish these two the best.
