What Happened To Max Boyens From Vanderpump Rules?
Back in 2019, "Vanderpump Rules" producers were facing a problem. After eight seasons of non-stop drama, things were getting boring. Moreover, the premise of the show had long since become ridiculous. "VPR" began as a reality series exploring the complicated relationships between a group of struggling 20-somethings with Hollywood aspirations stuck working at one of Lisa Vanderpump's LA restaurants.
The show was an instant hit. Part of its success can be attributed to the fact that, unlike many reality shows, the cast of "VPR" were friends, so the conflicts felt very real. It also differed from other Bravo shows because it wasn't about the super-rich. Instead, it was about down-on-their-luck struggling actors who leased crappy cars and lived in humble apartments. Of course, after a few successful seasons, the "down-on-their-luck" actors became successful reality stars who no longer needed to go to auditions, let alone work at a cocktail bar. So, to switch things up and recapture some of that old magic, producers brought in three new cast members for Season 9.
One of the new cast was Max Boyens, a bartender at the brand new TomTom — a restaurant co-owned by two of the original cast members. Boyens only lasted a season before leaving the show in disgrace. What happened to him, and where is he now?
Max Boyens was let go
2020 was a year of reckoning for "Vanderpump Rules," as much of the original cast was let go due to allegations of past racist actions. Fan favorites Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute were fired when a former cast member Faith Stowers claimed that they had bullied her and called the police falsely, accusing her of committing a crime and thus endangering her life, per Vanity Fair. What was almost more surprising was how hard the producers came down on the new cast members, including Max Boyens.
Boyens was let go after a series of tweets from nearly a decade earlier resurfaced. In the tweets, Boyens used racial slurs and made offensive jokes about Asian people. Boyens was let go along with the aforementioned cast members and newcomer Brett Caprioni. "Bravo and Evolution Media confirmed today that Stassi Schroeder, Kristen Doute, Max Boyens, and Brett Caprioni will not be returning to Vanderpump Rules," the network said in a statement, per Life & Style. Boyens responded with his own statement apologizing for his past actions. "I want to sincerely apologize for what I tweeted in 2012 — it was wrong on every level," he wrote. "It is not a representation of who I am. I am shocked I ever tweeted that and I am disgusted and embarrassed. I am truly sorry."
Despite the turmoil, Boyens stayed on good terms with much of the cast and even kept his job at TomTom for another year – until he resigned out of the blue.
Max Boyens has moved on
Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz had Max Boyens' back all the way while he weathered a scandal at Bravo. His future at the restaurant remained in question for awhile, but it eventually became clear that he was still welcome there, as he was spotted hanging out with Schwartz and Sandoval. "The Toms and Max stuck together all night," a source told Us Weekly after spying the trio at an industry event in November 2020. "The Toms have had Max's back work-wise with TomTom shutting down through the pandemic. They treat Max like their little brother and look after him."
Boyens reportedly didn't want to stick around too long, though. A year later, news broke the Boyens had resigned from TomTom sometime in the spring of 2021. So, where did he end up, and what is he doing now? It's hard to answer that with 100% certainty, as Boyens keeps a low profile on social media. According to his Instagram, he is the CFO of a liquor company called Una Mas Cocktails. A deeper dive into his social media reveals that he updated his Linkedin in June 2022 to state that he is now the general manager of TAO Group.
Despite being booted from the show and resigning from TomTom, it appears that Boyens is still in good standing with the cast, as a quick scan of his Instagram will reveal that many of them still interact with his posts.
