Celebrities Who Can't Stand Harry Styles
Former One Direction member Harry Styles has garnered major success as a solo artist since the band left the spotlight. Many fans feel that the musician is the most successful solo act to come out of the boyband, and it seems that he may have solidified that title in 2022. Styles' hit single "As It Was" spent a record-breaking 15 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart following its release. The "Sign of the Times" singer also ventured further into the world of acting that year, starring in two films including "Don't Worry Darling" and "My Policeman."
Why do Styles' millions of adoring fans find him so appealing? Perhaps it's because he appears to be rather kind and charismatic for someone of his status. According to Look To The Stars, the "Dunkirk" actor has worked with a number of charities, including Amnesty International, MusiCares, Save the Children, and more. The seemingly-nice celeb even has a song titled "Treat People With Kindness." However, he's still managed to rub quite a few people the wrong way, including a few of his peers. Is there a dark side to Styles that only Hollywood knows about? We'll let you decide whether or not these celebrities who can't stand Harry Styles are justified in their opinions.
Billy Porter criticized Harry Styles' Vogue cover
Harry Styles became quite a hot topic on the internet after he graced the cover of Vogue's December 2020 issue. The musician made history as he became the first man to be featured on the cover of American Vogue, per CNN. Despite this accomplishment, it was Styles' fashion choices that garnered the most attention after the magazine was released. The "As It Was" singer was criticized for wearing a dress on the Vogue cover. Actor Billy Porter was among the celebrities who shared their opinions on Styles' bold look.
During an interview with The Sunday Times, Porter shared: "I feel like the fashion industry has accepted me because they have to. I'm not necessarily convinced and here is why. I created the conversation [about non-binary fashion] and yet Vogue still put Harry Styles, a straight white man, in a dress on their cover for the first time." He went on to clarify why he felt Harry Styles wasn't the best choice for the historic Vogue cover.
"I'm not dragging Harry Styles, but he is the one you're going to try and use to represent this new conversation? He doesn't care, he's just doing it because it's the thing to do. This is politics for me. This is my life." Porter later issued an apology for this statement during an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
Zayn Malik 'never really spoke' to Harry Styles
Harry Styles and Zayn Malik spent a large part of their teen years navigating the entertainment industry together along with the rest of their One Direction bandmates, so you might think that they developed a close relationship during that time, but Malik shared this isn't the case. The "Pillowtalk" singer, who is now a successful solo act in his own right, got candid about his relationship with the One Direction members during an interview with Us Weekly in 2017. "We're in touch," he said of his fellow One Direction alums. "Everything is on a civil level. It's not the way it used to be, obviously, because we were spending 24 hours a day in the band and now we're growing as individual men, but we still check in."
Malik was then asked where he stands with Styles, and it seems that his response may suggest there's a bit of tension between him and the star. "To be honest, I never really spoke to Harry even when I was in the band," he said. "So I didn't really expect that much of a relationship with him." This statement is a bit puzzling considering the numerous YouTube compilations that document Styles and Malik's many interactions during their time in One Direction. Of course, there is still a possibility that they weren't all that close behind the scenes.
Harry Styles isn't manly enough for Candace Owens
Political commentator Candace Owens made it clear that she wasn't a fan of Harry Styles' Vogue cover when she started a rather heated conversation on Twitter. She took the time to respond to a tweet from Vogue that promoted the December 2020 magazine issue. "There is no society that can survive without strong men," Owens penned. "The East knows this. In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence. It is an outright attack. Bring back manly men."
Styles seemingly responded to Candace's Tweet with a shady Instagram post. He took to the platform to share a picture from his photoshoot for Variety's "Hitmaker of the Year" issue. "Bring back manly men," he captioned the post, seemingly referencing Candace's statement. The "Blackout" author took to Twitter to react to Styles. "When people try to tell me I don't have influence, and then @Harry_Styles dedicates an entire post to my tweet," she penned in part. It seems that Owens' end goal may have been to simply get Styles' attention. If that's the case, she was probably thrilled to find out he acknowledged her.
Liam Payne wouldn't hire Harry Styles to babysit his son
Zayn Malik isn't the only former One Direction member who may not be on speaking terms with Harry Styles. Liam Payne also made a few harsh comments about the "Watermelon Sugar" singer. He took a jab at Styles' fashion choices during an appearance on the "Capital FM Big Top 40" show in 2017. When asked whether he'd allow his former bandmates to babysit his son, he shared, "I couldn't rely on Harry 'cos I feel like my child would come out dressed in something that I just wouldn't understand."
Payne must really be baffled by Styles' attire because he commented on his look once again during an interview with The Face. He didn't exactly diss the star's fashion choices this time, so maybe he reevaluated his previous comments. "If he wants to wear one earring and go to the Met Gala wearing something unexpected, what of it?," he shared. "Fair f***ing play. I couldn't put myself in that. I'd look f***ing ... It'd look weird." The star also revealed that Styles had become a stranger to him. "I was actually genuinely looking at some pictures of him the other day, and I just thought, "I don't know what more I'd say to him other than, 'Hello' and 'How are you?,'" he explained. It might be safe to assume that Payne and Styles aren't exactly close.
Noel Gallagher thinks Harry Styles doesn't write his own songs
Noel Gallagher is most well-known for his previous role in the Englsh rock band Oasis, but he's also known as one of Harry Styles' most passionate haters. He previously shared his opinion on the star during an appearance on Absolute Radio in 2017. "You're not telling me Harry Styles is currently in a room somewhere writing a song," he said. "With any joy, he'll be surrounded by a lot of girls, I can assure you he's not got an acoustic guitar out trying to write a middle eight for something."
He went on to reveal who he believed wrote the star's songs "People of my age have let themselves go, they're fat, balding idiots with fading tattoos. They sit in their garage and write s**te like 'Sign of the Times' for Harry Styles. Which, quite frankly, my cat could have written in about 10 minutes." According to Gallagher, his wife is actually a fan of Styles' music and praised his debut single, "Sign of the Times." Hmm ... maybe that's why he isn't particularly fond of the singer.
Did Harry Styles snub Lucius?
Pop group Lucius came forward to seemingly allege they were wronged by Harry Styles. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the musicians explained that they worked with Styles on a song that didn't end up making it on his album. The "Lights Up" singer then reportedly asked if they'd be willing to record vocals for his single, "Treat People with Kindness." "We were like, 'Yeah, of course,'" Jess Wolfe of Lucius said. "If it's just 'oohs' and 'aaahs,' it's not a big deal. And it's a good opportunity for us. But we started singing and we were singing the whole chorus." Group member Holly Laessig chimed in, adding, "We thought he was gonna add on top after and that we'd be in the background."
Wolfe went on to reveal why the group was thrown off when they heard the final product. "Two weeks later, they sent us the track," she said. "And it was literally us. We start the song, we sing every chorus, just us. We trade off the bridge. It is us and Harry Styles. Harry Styles and us." The group shared they felt they were never properly credited for their work. While speaking with Variety, Wolfe shared that the group's members never spoke to Styles directly about the issue. She also explained that Lucius would have gone about the collaboration differently if they knew it would be treated as a feature.
