Andy Samberg Met His Future Wife Through One Of His SNL Co-Stars

Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom are two talented lovebirds. Samberg is a well-known comedian, while Newsom is an accomplished indie musician. After five years of dating, they got engaged in February 2013, per Us Weekly, and that September, they got married. After the ceremony, an insider shared, "Andy's speech was the perfect mix of comedy and sentiment. Both he and Joanna were crying throughout the speech."

In March 2017, Samberg and Newsom welcomed a daughter into the world. On multiple occasions, Samberg has spoken positively and humorously about parenting. In a 2017 interview on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Jimmy Kimmel asked Samberg his favorite thing about being a father so far. Samberg replied, "She has started just sitting there and making fart noises with her mouth and then laughing really hard. And I was like 'Oh, well I've taught her everything I know.'"

While Samberg has talked about his experiences being a father, what's the story leading up to his and Newsom's marriage? Well, as it turns out, Samberg met his future wife through a fellow "Saturday Night Live" cast member.

Fred Armisen introduced Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom

So who played matchmaker for Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom? It was, in fact, Samberg's "Saturday Night Live" co-star Fred Armisen who introduced Samberg to Newsom at one of Newsom's concerts in 2008. Apparently, the pair adored each other before even meeting. In a 2010 interview with Rolling Stone (via Elite Daily), Newsom told the outlet, "I remember being on tour, watching his old, pre-SNL stuff with my band, forwarding it to friends."

Newsom elaborated on her initial introduction to Samberg in an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers." She shared, "I was a big fan of his. In fact, the night that I met him, Fred Armisen brought him to one of my shows. And I had just been with my band backstage, like, an hour before, watching Just 2 Guyz." Just 2 Guyz was a short skit in which Samberg played the small role of Steve the c**t. Newsom continued, "So when I met him, he was kinda shy, and I said, 'Oh, my God, you're Steve the c**t!' He always says he saw heart bubbles."

Andy Samberg reflects on meeting Joanna Newsom

Andy Samberg vividly remembers the day he met Joanna Newsom. In an interview, he recalled attending one of Newsom's performances, which was incredibly exciting. He said, "I went with Fred Armisen and my friend Matt Murray, who's a comedy writer." Samberg revealed that Armisen had met Newsom at a festival the year before. There was another special guest who made the experience for Samberg all the more worthwhile: none other than comedian Mike Myers went to the show, but did not stay after to meet Newsom.

Samberg, who met his wife at her concert, has been supportive of her music career since Day One. In a 2017 appearance on "Conan," he said, "Before we ever met, I was a huge fan of her music. So now, it's incredible for me when she plays. I just sort of go and lie down on the floor and zen out while she plays. It's really great."
