What Lisa Marie Presley's Ex-Husband Danny Keough Does For A Living
The late Lisa Marie Presley had several high-profile marriages throughout the years, from Michael Jackson to Nicolas Cage. However, her very first marriage was to Danny Keough — a man she continued to have a close relationship with until her very last days. We can't help but wonder, though, just what does he do for a living?
While Lisa Marie would go on to marry Jackson, Cage, and most recently, producer Michael Lockwood, the first time she walked down the aisle was decidedly more low-key. In fact, back in 1988, People revealed the nuptials included just nine guests — after which they jetted off on their honeymoon before the press could get wind of their marriage. Unfortunately, when they finally did, the press painted a cruel picture of the groom, who — unlike Lisa Marie — came from an unknown family. According to People, the British tabloid The Sun went so far as to suggest he used his bride for fame and fortune. However, in a press release given to the outlet, Lisa Marie's mother, Priscilla Presley, revealed she was all for the union. "Danny is a great guy, and I couldn't be happier for the two of them," she said.
Sadly for the former lovebirds, their marriage was short-lived. Per Hello!, Lisa Marie and Keough divorced in early 1994. However, they stayed close, and Keough was her best man when she married Lockwood in 2006. Our question remains, though: What does Danny Keough do?
He's a musician
While Danny Keough might not have been a household name at the time of his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, one thing that became public knowledge due to their union was his penchant for music. Speaking to People, several sources close to Danny revealed that within the controversial Church of Scientology (of which he was a member), it was well-known that he was gifted in the music department. "He is a very talented musician," shared one. People also revealed that, at the time, he was working as a bass player in Los Angeles.
Playing the bass is just one of his fortes, however. He's also a singer and provided vocals for the track "Deliver Me" on the soundtrack to the 2000 film, "Cabin By The Lake" (via IMDb). In response to a video of the song posted on YouTube, many listeners praised his deep voice. "Sounds like Leonard Cohen," praised one. Another, meanwhile, was desperate to hear more from him. "Does he sing more songs than this one?! His voice is great!" they wrote.
"Cabin By The Lake" wasn't the only film project Danny worked on. Per IMDb, he also worked on the title music for "The Darkling," another 2000 TV movie. As for whether he plans on releasing any new music in the future (whether for film projects or on his own), we'll have to sit tight.
... but he's also provided for by the church of Scientology
So, what does Danny Keough do for a living? Simply put, he's a musician. However, according to the 1988 People article detailing his and Lisa Marie Presley's wedding, many of his financial obligations were taken care of by the Church of Scientology — the very institution that brought the then-couple together in the first place.
As noted by People, Danny's mother and stepfather started a private Scientology academy. As such, a fellow member told the outlet that, while it only made sense for people to speculate that he may have been exploiting Lisa Marie financially, "With Danny, this is not the case. All his needs are met by the church." While the source didn't delve into more detail, another insider revealed that the couple lived in homes owned by fellow Scientologists, with Danny receiving extra income by painting them.
Per New Idea, even though Lisa Marie is thought to have left Scientology in 2014, all signs seemingly pointed to her return after the tragic death of her son with Danny, Benjamin Keough (via Press Reader). According to a source who spoke with the outlet, Danny never left and "remains devoted to the church," so they may continue to support him financially.
He hasn't lived a lavish lifestyle
It's thought Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough remained so close following their split that the former couple was actually living together when Lisa Marie died. The U.S. Sun claimed in March 2021 that the two were brought back together (in a platonic way) following Benjamin Keough's death. "Danny has moved around a lot in the past but came back to be by Lisa's side immediately when they were left devastated by Ben's death, he was staying with her at the Beverly Hills Hotel," a source claimed, before sharing Lisa Marie and her ex had reportedly bought a property together in the lavish Calabasas area of Beverly Hills.
Despite his career as an actor and singer and reported Scientology connections, Riley Keough has admitted she never enjoyed a lavish lifestyle while spending time with her dad growing up in the same way she did with her mom. "I grew up very privileged with my mother, but my dad didn't live like that," she told The Guardian back in 2017, claiming her dad would often just sleep on mattresses on the floor. "He lived in cabins and trailer parks. He just didn't have much money... When I was, like, eight, I told him, 'I want to grow up and be poor like you!' He was eating a bowl of cereal. I didn't realize how wildly offensive that was!"
