The Tragic Story Of Alexis Eddy From 'Are You The One?'
The following contains references to addiction and murder.
MTV's "Are You The One?" is one of many reality dating shows that combines the shot at finding love with a cash prize. The premise of the hit show is simple: Contestants are challenged to find their perfect partner — as decided by a matchmaking algorithm — among the many players featured on the show. If they succeed, the group of love-hungry singles splits a cash prize valued at up to $1 million.
Since there's so much on the line, viewers obviously get really invested in the contestants. Where are the stars from "Are You The One" today? Some have stayed with their match, while others have gone their separate ways. There was Julia Rose and Stephen McHugh from season four, but it turned out that they weren't a perfect pair; Rose went on to date internet personality Jake Paul, but they split up in December 2022. There was also Uche Nwosu and Clinton Moxam from season six, who got together despite the Truth Booth's assertion that they weren't a match. The duo got married in September 2021 — proving that machines don't know everything. While some found love after the show, the story of Season 6 contestant Alexis Eddy ended in tragedy.
Alexis Eddy died of an overdose
Fans were introduced to Alexis Eddy in Season 6 of MTV's "Are You The One," which aired in 2017. Tragically, her life was cut short a few years after she appeared in the dating competition. On January 9, 2020, TMZ reported that police received an early morning call for a young woman in cardiac arrest. The 23-year-old was found dead at the West Virginia home.
Her grandmother, Carol Efaw, later revealed Eddy's cause of death to Radar. "It was an OD," she told the outlet. "She caught a hold of it again." Efaw blamed "Are You The One?" for exacerbating Eddy's struggles, telling the outlet "those shows mess up kids." She added, "My son and daughter-in-law are devastated."
Eddy had often shared about her recovery on social media, and in September 2019, she posted a photo of her and her dad. "Here's the first picture of my father and me, both sober and healthy, we've ever been blessed enough to take," she wrote. "Overwhelmed with gratefulness today." She added the hashtag #RecoveryRocks. Shortly before that, Eddy posted a photo outside of a Community Recovery Center and added the caption, "Recovery at its finest ;) Gr8ful 2 b clean & sober #justfortoday." So it was obviously very important to her.

Alexis Eddy's cousin was charged with first-degree murder
Alexis Eddy also made waves on "Are You The One?" for her connection to a murder case. During her time on season six, she told the other contestants her first cousin was Sheila Eddy, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder charges in 2014, per ABC News. Alexis even had a tattoo for Sheila and said that she still loves her cousin. "My best friend [and] first cousin is currently incarcerated for first degree murder," Alexis said (via In Touch). "I only stood up for her until the day she pled guilty. She was my best friend. She'll always be my best friend, and I will always love her. Because you don't turn your back on family."
Sheila and her friend Rachel Shoaf murdered Skylar Neese in July 2012. All three were 16 years old, and Sheila and Shoaf admitted later that they "just didn't like" Neese. The murder took place in Star City, West Virginia. After Shoaf and Sheila picked up Neese, they drove into a forest and stabbed her. Shaof ended up confessing to the police several months later. Sheila was sentenced to life in prison, while Shoaf received a 30 years sentence for second-degree murder.
