Justin Bieber And The Weeknd Aren't Friends. Here's Why

Hollywood relationships keep us on our toes, as celebs often break up, make up, and rebound at lightning speed. Within just a few months, we saw Emily Ratajkowski make a public appearance with Pete Davidson and cuddle up with both Brad Pitt and DJ Orazio Rispo after splitting from her ex-husband, Sebastian Bear-McClard. (You do you, EmRata!) But of the great romantic sagas of the past decade, "Selenators" and "Beliebers" know there's one dramatic relationship famous for making headlines. Per Popsugar, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber made their first appearance as a couple in 2011, and dated off and on for the next seven years. It was a lot. There were cheating accusations, diss tracks, throwback Instagram posts, public spats – you name it. At the end of the day, Jelena simply wasn't meant to be.

In the Apple TV+ documentary, "Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me," Gomez discussed how she felt "haunted" by the ghost of Bieber even after the relationship ended (via Hypebae). She added, "I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever ... [but] ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me." The former lovebirds have since moved on, but their story continues to be celebrated in pop culture consciousness. It even overshadows their time with other people, including Gomez's time with former flames Charlie Puth and The Weeknd, and Bieber's time dating Sofia Richie while on a break from Gomez. If you're wondering what Bieber thinks about Gomez's exes, the answer is ... not much.

Justin Bieber and The Weeknd dissed each other

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd's relationship lasted for about 10 months in 2017, although skeptics wondered whether they were only together to make their exes jealous. For Gomez, it could have meant getting back at Bieber, who began dating Sofia Richie the previous summer. The Weeknd's ex-girlfriend, Bella Hadid, also didn't react well to the news. "[Bella] is hurt and pissed that [The Weeknd has] moved on so quickly with Selena," a source told People.

At the time, there was some petty jealousy involved on both ends. When The Weeknd was snapped kissing Gomez in January 2017, Bieber slammed The Weeknd's music, telling TMZ it was "whack." About a month later, he further shaded his nemesis on Instagram Live when he said that his favorite song of the moment was The Weeknd's "Starboy," via Us Weekly. He wasn't being sincere, though. Just after making the claim, Bieber burst out laughing. His friend, Director Alfredo Flores said, "Oh s***, that was funny," and Bieber echoed the statement before ending the live video. Also telling: Bieber opted to skip The Grammys that year, where The Weeknd was a performer. Coincidence?

Of course, The Weeknd wasn't above throwing shade, either. His song "Some Way" — which he dropped in February 2017 — featured NSFW lyrics that seem to be pointed at Bieber, including, "I think your girl fell in love with me / She say my f*** and tongue game a remedy."

The Weeknd was upset about his breakup with Selena Gomez

Fans probably remember, but things didn't end well between Selena Gomez and The Weeknd. They broke up in October 2017, but before announcing the breakup, Gomez was spotted hanging out with Justin Bieber. According to Marie Claire, they "reconnected through church," and it doesn't look like they were praying together. A source told Us Weekly, "[Justin] has been great to [Selena] since her [kidney] surgery, and they are on good terms right now." However, Gomez was still dating The Weeknd at this point, who was "well aware Selena and Justin were talking," though he "didn't care" about it. Apparently, he did care, because he officially broke up with Gomez a few days later, per People.

Following the breakup, The Weeknd channeled his frustration over the whole Gomez-Bieber thing in a song. In March 2018, he released "Dear Melancholy," which was packed with lyrics about his relationships. "When no one know what love is / And I know it ain't you for sure / You'd rather something toxic / So, I poison myself again," he sang in "I Was Never There." As Elle pointed out, Bieber is the "something toxic" here, and The Weeknd coped with the Jelena saga by self-medicating, presumably because he wasn't able to react to this breakup in a healthy way. These days, Jelena has been laid to rest, and The Weeknd is dating Bella Hadid look-a-like Simi Khadra. But don't expect him to bury the hatchet with Bieber anytime soon.
