The Major Worry Priscilla Presley Had During Her Marriage To Elvis
Being married to the dubbed "King of Rock and Roll" is not an easy feat, and Priscilla Presley can attest to that. Priscilla and Elvis Presley had a whirlwind relationship that started when she was merely 14 years old. The pair reportedly met in 1959 in West Germany (per Today), because her stepfather was in the air force while Elvis was in the military. It might as well have been love at first sight as the pair were inseparable after their initial encounter due to a mutual friend, Currie Grant.
After multiple meetups surrounded by friends, the pair grew closer and before their fourth encounter, Priscilla's parents demanded to meet the famed "Hound Dog" singer. Her parents didn't agree with their relationship due to their large age gap and his popularity; however, by the end of their meeting, they were sold. In an essay for People written in September 1985, Priscilla revealed that Elvis was charming and addressed their concerns that helped put their minds at ease. "'She's a lot more mature than her age and I enjoy her company. It hasn't been easy for me, being away from home and all. It gets kinda lonely. I guess you might say I need someone to talk to. You don't have to worry about her, Captain," he promised. "I'll take good care of her.'"
The confirmation was just what the doting couple needed. After receiving their blessing, it was off to the races and their obsession with each other grew.
Priscilla and Elvis had trust issues early on
Elvis and Priscilla Presley had a whirlwind relationship that had many challenges, yet that didn't stop them from falling in love and making the commitment to exchange vows in a small wedding ceremony held in Las Vegas in May of 1967.
"The beginning [of our marriage] was very difficult, but I knew what I was in for because I saw it at a very young age," the New York native told the Daily Mail in March 2022. "I found out how vicious people could be. There were rumors I was pregnant, and that's why he got married and I'm going, 'Oh, my God, this is not gonna be good for me.' That's when I started not reading papers anymore or [magazines] in the grocery stores."
In addition to their busy lifestyle, rumors of infidelity also began to swarm which prompted her to worry about leaving her famed husband alone. In an interview with People in September 2021, the "Touched by an Angel" alum shared that being married to the icon was tough as she "had to learn everything" to keep up with his hectic lifestyle and attention. "Women gravitated to him, so I would be nervous when he had to go places alone. I would even go with him to get his teeth cleaned! I always had an eye on him because everyone in the world was after him." Although Priscilla saw the "Blue Suede Shoes" singer as a gentle soul, their public marriage eventually began to take a toll early on.
Their love story continues on
Elvis and Priscilla Presley connected very deeply at the beginning of their relationship and she knew him like no one ever did.
Throughout their relationship, the pair had their fair share of ups and downs, which ultimately led to the end of their marriage and she filed for divorce in February 1972, per People. With being involved with someone of his stature, the "Melrose Place" actor felt as if she lost herself in the process. "You lived his life, you honestly didn't have your own life. [...] So you really kind of lost yourself," Priscilla said during a November 2019 appearance on the U.K.'s "Loose Woman" talk show. She later added, "I did not divorce him because I didn't love him ― he was the love of my life, truly. If anything, I left because [...] I needed to find out what the world was like."
Although the two divorced, their love for each other never faded even after the "Jailhouse Rock" crooner passed away in August of 1977 due to cardiac arrest, per StyleCaster. The once adoring couple welcomed one daughter, the late Lisa Marie Presley who passed at the age of 54 in January of the same condition as her late father. "It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us," Priscilla said in a statement to People. "She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known."
