Where Are The Stars From Are You The One? Today?
If "Love is Blind" has done anything, it has reminded viewers why reality TV shows are so successful: people love watching other folks try to find their true love. Television has brought the quest of meeting the perfect match into the audience's lives for many decades. One way to do this has been to gather a group of individuals and pair them up with who might possibly be the one.
"Are You The One?" premiered on MTV in 2014 with the premise that an algorithm could lead each contestant to the love of their life, selecting this person from a group of participants. Over eight seasons, fans saw couples fall in love, stay in love, break up, get back together, get engaged, have the wedding of their dreams, and have children. Others started their journey with one partner, then ended up with another competitor. The show proved there isn't just one way to love.
In the end, the contestants moved on to lead lives of their own, start businesses, and participate in other reality shows. Now, "Are You The One?" is coming back for its ninth season and, as reported by Variety, it will be hosted by Kamie Crawford in Spain. Let's look at some memorable past contestants and see what they're up to these days.
Ryan Malaty
Ryan Malaty was a contestant on "Are You The One?" in 2014 during the show's first season. Afterward, he participated in different TV shows and short films such as "Youthful Daze," "My Dead Ex," "That One Time," and "List of a Lifetime." He has also co-hosted AfterBuzz TV, discussing TV shows and entertainment news with other hosts and people from the industry.
In 2021, rumors of Crystal Harris (who was married to Hugh Hefner) and Malaty's relationship began and lasted well into 2022. A person close to the couple told Us Weekly, "Ryan is a good friend and they are getting to know each other." The news came shortly after Harris posted on Instagram announcing the end of her relationship with Nathan Levi. "I've been surrounding myself with people I love and trying to take things easy lately. ... I'm healing from things in my life and growing as a person," she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post.
In 2021, there were murmurs of Malaty signing on for "Vanderpump Rules." On "#NoFilter With Zack Peter," the reality TV podcaster commented, "And so 'Vanderpump Rules' last year went through the whole racism scandal. We had the tweets with Max and Brett, we had Stassi, Kristen, then we had Jax and Brittany who exited the show. And so now they've introduced another straight, white guy as the latest addition to 'Vanderpump Rules,' and there is no inkling of any diversity joining the cast." But in 2023, there's no word that Malaty will be on the show.
Amber Lee Diamond
Amber Lee Diamond's current situation is proof that reality TV can actually lead to the life you have always dreamed of. She met Ethan Diamond on the first season of "Are You The One?" and he proposed to her during the reunion. "Life happened very quickly for us after the show ... We got engaged and they wanted to do a wedding for us, but there were too many stipulations. We turned it down but a few months later we found out we were pregnant so they reached back out. They were very excited and they offered to do a baby shower episode," Amber told We Are Entertainment News.
After finding true love, the Diamonds share two daughters and two dogs. As an Austin native, Amber was happy to settle down and start her family in the area. Talking to Austonia, she said, "We are not a fairy tale couple. We've had a hard time and we've worked really hard to make it work. We are a hard-working, loving family and that's why we love Austin, it's perfect here."
Aside from being a family woman — with tons of Instagram pics to prove it — Amber hopes to see change in the entertainment industry, particularly an increase in Asian representation. "I feel passionate about the fact that growing up I never had many Asian role models to look up to, so I was constantly comparing myself to the beauty and cultural standards of white leads," she told Authority Magazine in 2021.
Max Gentile
Max Gentile was on "Are You The One?" in Season 8. During an episode of "Back to Reality," former Bachelor Ben Higgins asked Gentile, "What is the experience like being a part of the first queer dating show?" Gentile answered, "It is a queer dating show, and I feel like I sometimes overlook that just because it is something that's just become so normal for me now. Obviously that feels great to even say." Gentile noted that the concept would have been surprising to him a few years back.
A producer had messaged the star to invite him to join the cast, then asked Gentile whether or not he was bisexual, which he is. Gentile didn't grow up in an LGBTQ+ friendly environment, but his gay uncles encouraged him to embrace his sexuality, which shined through on the show. "I feel like I need to break out of this cocoon and try it. ... So, then my uncles were like, 'Hey, why don't you come out and live with us?'" Gentile recalled from his college years on "The Nosh Podcast."
Since leaving the show, Gentile joined Cameo, where he has sent videos to fans of his and received a 5-star rating. He has also joined Seven20, a Web3 company that focuses on blockchain, digital content, and the metaverse. The agency has partnered with brands such as Rising Agency, Outlier Ventures, and Zytara. As part of this venture, Gentile has become an artist manager and has been working with musician OKO.
John Moustis
As John Moustis indicated in an interview with The News-Gazette, it wasn't all that common for law school students to submit applications for reality TV. His presence would bring something different to the series and would give fans a lot to talk about. That's why Moustis believed the producers of the show had chosen him. He said, "I personally went because I wanted to have a good time. Definitely $50,000 would motivate anybody." His studies seemed to help Moustis throughout the competition, too. "I would just say that at times I can be a pretty calculated person, which comes in handy in law school, and I brought that with me on the show," he told The Daily Illini.
Moustis focused on his professional career outside of TV once his season of "Are You The One?" ended. He became Vice President of Sponsor Coverage for a private equity advisory. "I currently practice law on the side as a solo practitioner," he told Lawyers for the Creative Arts, adding, "So, the clients couldn't be any different (wealthy finance professionals vs. local artists), which makes the LCA work a welcome change and that much more fulfilling." Moustis shared in a 2020 reunion with fellow Season 2 contestants that he was focusing on his financial consulting firm's business development.
Moustis still entertains fans in the Chicago area by playing music with his cover band, The Bread Machine.
Jenni Knapmiller
"Are You The One?" is all about finding the perfect match once technology has done its job and the algorithm brings the best possible result for each contestant. However, computers can fail, and the perfect partner may not always be the one you were matched with on the show. That was the case for Jenni Knapmiller, who is married fellow contestant Curtis Hadzicki despite not being matched with him on Season 2. In a detailed interview on "Straight Candid Podcast," Knapmiller confessed that she had really hoped to take home the prize money from this competition by finding her match as designated by the algorithm: John Moustis. Thankfully, she and Hadzicki had a second chance to get to know each other after their reality stint.
In October 2020, Knapmiller made an announcement through her Instagram by saying, "I didn't know I could smile this big," and showcasing her engagement ring and a kiss from her man. On his end, Hadzicki captioned his post, "I'll spend the rest of my life trying to properly thank you for all that you do. I love you forever." Their wedding took place in spring 2022 at a location very special to the couple: Big Sur, where they had previously road-tripped together. "No words, lots of feelings," Knapmiller wrote in an Instagram post with wedding photos.
Unlike those individuals who participate on reality shows and get bitten by the reality star bug, Knapmiller continued her career off camera. She currently lives in San Diego where she works as a nurse.
Uche Nwosu
In June 2020, Uche Nwosu announced her engagement to fellow "Are You The One?" star Clinton Moxam through an Instagram post: "Still speechless. I honestly didn't think love like this existed." Simultaneously, Moxam wrote in his post: "Uche I've been searching for you since I was like 9. Our relationship and the love we have for one another came out of nowhere & it's undeniable you're my wife."
Their story captivated the couple's fans, but it took hard work and going against producers for Nwosu and Moxam to get the fairytale ending they dreamed of. "After that it was like 'you guys need to split up,' some shady stuff went down after that. Clinton was locked in a room with his match. The producers knew the agenda they wanted to push. ... we had to decide, we're not going to care about that," she said on "Not To Make This About Me."
Although the two weren't matched on the show, things turned out for the best when they connected after the season ended production. The couple tied the knot on September 4, 2021, jokingly saying it was on that day because of Beyoncé's birthday. Moxam told Over The Moon, "Originally, I wanted to propose to Uche with family members around in New Orleans, where we first met, but we were stuck in L.A. and none of our family would be able to attend." Moxam included Nwosu's parents virtually by asking for their permission to marry her, and her mother was present for a Malibu proposal a few months later.
Joe Torgerson
Joe Torgerson (Season 6) and Mikala Thomas (Season 4) met one another after their respective times on "Are You The One?" Those who continued to follow Torgerson after his journey on the show know that the contestant built his social media personality on golfing. Many of his Instagram posts are on a golf course, showcasing his talent and his passion for the sport. However, followers will also notice his tattoos, dog, and how much he enjoys traveling the world with his fiancee.
Although fans now know them as a couple, Thomas once shared on Instagram in 2018: "This is my friend Joe. Everyone thinks Joe and I date, and that we met on Ex On The Beach... but actually I'm not on that show and he's my real life friend that I met once at a taco place. Now we watch movies and go to Disney together." (Torgerson did participate in "Ex on the Beach.") Three years later, Torgerson announced their engagement by captioning a photo with the words, "You're stuck with me now." And Thomas channeled her old 2018 caption by simultaneously writing, "Best friends forever." The couple hasn't tied the knot yet, but their followers will certainly be celebrating with them when the time comes.
Cali Trepp
Cali Trepp entered the healthcare field by becoming a psych RN, per her Instagram. Her love life seems to be going just as well as her professional life after getting engaged to former "Are You The One?" contestant Tomas Buenos and marrying him. Although it took the two a bit to realize they were each other's perfect match, everything seemed to work out after the show. Their shared passion for music festivals was a key component in the relationship, offering the perfect location for both a marriage proposal and a wedding.
In November 2021, Trepp announced that she had said yes to Buenos. Her Instagram caption for the couple pictured at EDC Orlando read, "I had no idea what was going on, forgot to say yes... It was so heartwarming to have our friends there for this moment and even the crowd around us cheering!"
Less than a year after the proposal, their wedding ceremony took place at another music festival. This time around, the couple gathered their friends at Electric Forest. "On Friday, June 24th, I married my best friend. We recently just celebrated 4 years of partnership ... Being in the forest with all of our forest family felt like a dream and I couldn't have imagined a more perfect moment," Trepp shared on Instagram.
Shannon Duffy
Reality TV created to find love doesn't guarantee that love will make it beyond the cameras, that it will last, or that it will be conventional. For Shannon Duffy, love was definitely not conventional when she fell for fellow castmate Anthony Martin. The two were part of "Are You The One?" and "Ex on the Beach," but their romance didn't end with wedding bells — it became an on-and-off relationship.
In 2020, the couple announced they were expecting a daughter. Duffy shared with People that she had planned a very special gender reveal to surprise not only her family but the father of her baby, as well. "He thought we were just getting lunch with our parents so they could meet for the first time. It was the perfect plan." She explained about her COVID-era doctor appointments, "I thought maybe he felt a little disconnected with everything going on. It's just not the same through FaceTime and videos. I wanted him to feel as excited as I am and that he is an important part of this process." Two years later, in January 2022, Duffy announced she would welcome her second child. However, she didn't share the details of who the father is, and she made sure to note that she was doing everything as a single mother: "It's us three against the world, May 2022."
Duffy has also grown her online presence by having an OnlyFans account.
Jenna Brown
As a queer-friendly dating show, "Are You The One?" opened the space for individuals from the LGBTQ+ community to join, explore the dating world, and share their love stories. Jenna Brown has two queer siblings, which influenced her interest in the reality program. "My sisters and I love queer representation on TV, and it is so rare that members of our community get to be the front runners on any show. When I heard about AYTO having an entirely queer season, I KNEW that it was for me," she told Nonchalant, also highlighting her flair for the dramatic.
Although most people remember Brown for dating Kai Wes, things weren't always perfect for the couple, and in 2019 they broke things off. "I need my space and I need to reevaluate the situation that I'm in. Maybe I'm forcing myself to be disconnected from Kai because I'm afraid of him hurting me," Brown said in a clip from the show.
Brown has always been honest about her past drug addiction and her recovery, and has shared that addiction was the reason why she wasn't able to pursue an acting career. However, things have changed, and now she is redirecting her path toward that goal once more. "I also would love to play queer characters in other genres as well. Since COVID-19 quarantine began, I have been writing/brainstorming short films with other queer actors, and also obsessing over gay TikTok," she said to Nonchalant.
If you or anyone you know needs help with addiction issues, help is available. Visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website or contact SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
Kari Snow
After her time on "Are You The One?" Kari Snow didn't shy away from television and joined Netflix's "Sexy Beasts" in 2021. However, the highlight of her career after the reality show was in 2020 when she became Miss New Jersey at Miss United States and had, as she called it on Instagram, "a Sandra Bullock moment." She used the time to continue advocating for the LGBTQ+ community as a member: "The pageant might be over, but my platform 'Love Without Limits' lives on. When I say I'm an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, that doesn't mean I'm just advocating for the gays. I also stand by those whom are transgender, questioning/queer, intersex, asexual, and any person linked to the plus sign. I want the best for ALL of us."
Snow posts footage of herself working as a singer on Instagram and shared that more music would be coming in 2023. Most of her covers can be found on her YouTube Channel, Kariselle Snow. She is currently active on TikTok, too.
Kai Wes
Before joining "Are You The One?," Kai Wes was sharing their transition with their Instagram followers (which have grown since the show). They told Vice in 2019, "In the age of being a millennial, turning to social media really helped me find the community that I was looking for." Although their relationship with Jenna Brown took over their participation on the show, Wes remembers how important being on the series was for them. "When you put a whole bunch of people that have been ostracized in a myriad ways, in both their personal, professional, familial lives, in addition to being ostracized in our own communities ... you put all of us in a house where suddenly your sexuality isn't the issue, I would tell you that I've never felt more welcomed in a group of people," they shared.
Since their path on the MTV project, Wes has been a part of different shows and shorts such as "Twenty" and "Thrive" and has continued participating on reality TV with "True Life: Quarantine Stories." In late 2022, Wes partnered with Nike to run in a Malibu half-marathon, after years away from the sport. "...I was presented with the opportunity to reclaim my identity as an athlete and my relationship to running in a way I never thought I'd say yes to, but that I can feel my soul and my body thanking me for leaning into," they wrote on Instagram.
Jonathan Monroe
Anyone who has a TikTok account has at least seen Jonathan Monroe on their For You Page once. The man with the long, curly hair was part of "Are You The One?" during its most queer-friendly season — the eighth one. As reported by Gay City News, he at first expressed hesitation to date nonbinary individuals. Fans recognized Monroe from "Naked and Afraid," according to Showbiz CheatSheet. He can be seen in a old clip choosing not to eat a frog and struggling medically with the harsh conditions.
Nowadays, Monroe's career focuses on his hair and the brand deals he was able to achieve after reaching two million followers on TikTok, where he's not afraid to try a number of trends on his flowing locks. He has done videos to show different treatments such as the celery treatment, the bowl method with his mom, heatless waves, and a frozen avocado mask. Monroe has partnered with Itinera Cosmetics, Garnier, Marc Anthony, and Therabody.
