Everything We Know About Jennifer Garner And Ben Affleck's Children
A love story seemingly made in the stars, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner met in 2000 while filming the 2001 blockbuster "Pearl Harbor." When they reunited on the set of a 2003 Marvel flick, Garner and Ben recognized there was something worth pursuing. "That's where I found my wife. We met on 'Pearl Harbor,' which people hate, but we fell in love on 'Daredevil,'" Ben told Playboy in an interview. In 2005, after dating for about a year, Ben and Garner tied the knot and started a family. They first became parents in December 2005 when their daughter Violet Affleck was born. The two welcomed their second daughter, Seraphina Affleck, in January 2009. Their third child and only son, Samuel Affleck, was born in February 2012.
Over the years, Garner and Ben have gone out of their way to try to keep their children out of the public eye. This decision, Garner has said, stemmed from their own experiences with the media. In 2013, she was one of the A-listers who helped get a bill signed into law that keeps paparazzi from getting too close to the kids of celebs. One day though, "The Adam Project" actor would be open to sharing her kids' lives with the world. "We'll have to ask them when they're older," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021.
Now, that is not to say Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's kids have flown entirely under the radar. Here's what the two movie stars have shared about Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
Violet Affleck is her mother's twin
In a world where Shiloh Jolie-Pitt is the spitting image of Angelina Jolie and Ava Phillippe could literally be mistaken for Reese Witherspoon, celebrity kids favoring their mother's looks is no new thing — and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's firstborn is no exception. In August 2022, fans were all the more convinced of the resemblance between Jennifer Garner and Violet Affleck after the actor shared a throwback photo of her younger self. And when Violet and Garner attended the White House State Dinner together in December 2022, they both went with long black gowns. And of course, the striking resemblance did not go unnoticed on social media or by the press.
While Garner did tell The Hollywood Reporter that Violet and Ben have similar temperaments, other reports suggest Garner also has a lot in common with her eldest — beyond basically being twins, that is. "Violet [is] a real mommy's girl," a source once told In Touch. "Not only does she look identical to Jen, [but] they share similar personality traits, too, like their passion for cooking." Clearly, Garner passed down a bulk of her genes to Violet — and we definitely are loving it.
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are proud of their eldest
She might only be a teenager but Violet Affleck is already making both her parents proud. In a 2019 interview with People, Jennifer Garner revealed that Violet was getting into makeup, but was sure to not overuse it. "She's really smart about, 'Okay, now I'm leaving the house, now I need to check with my mom because chances are, she's gonna make me take this lip off,' which I do," the "13 Going on 30" actor shared. "So that's kind of where we are with it."
In addition to respecting her parents' rules, Violet also excels in school. During a 2020 appearance on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Ben Affleck gushed about his daughter's intellect and drive. "She's always been a very good student, and she's been interested in Spanish, and so I would often help her," he said. While Ben has a pretty strong grasp on the language, he told Clarkson that he now struggles to keep up with his daughter. "Now, all of a sudden, she's gotten into the grade where she's, like, in the harder Spanish classes and she's getting better," he said.
Outside of school and makeup, Ben and Garner have another reason to be proud of Violet: she's stepped up as the big sister to younger siblings, Seraphina and Samuel Affleck. "Violet's extremely protective of Seraphina and Samuel and really watches out for [them]," a source told In Touch. "She's extremely mature for her age."
Seraphina and Samuel Affleck have a 'unique bond'
With Seraphina and Samuel Affleck being closer in age, it is not too big a surprise that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's two youngest kids have a strong sibling relationship. "[Samuel] looks up to his older sisters and has a unique bond with Seraphina. The two of them spend hours playing together," a source told In Touch in 2019. "They squabble at times like all siblings, but generally speaking, they get on." What's more, Garner and Ben's two youngest are very much their own person. "Samuel used to be quietest, but he's beginning to come out of his shell," the insider said. Meanwhile, in another In Touch report, a source described Seraphina as being the most gregarious of the three siblings, adding, "She has more of a mischievous streak than the other two and is incredibly close to Ben."
While some tweens may shudder at the thought of hanging out with their mom and dad, Seraphina sure seems to enjoy going out and about with both Garner and Ben. In October 2022, for example, the Daily Mail shared snaps of Ben and Seraphina chatting it up as they walked into a pet store. A few months prior, the father-daughter duo was spotted out running errands in Paris, per In Touch. And in December 2022, the Daily Mail shared some photos of Garner and Seraphina presumably doing some Christmas shopping.
They all have an affinity for sports
Their parents might be Hollywood royalty but Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel Affleck apparently have their sights set on a different avenue. "Violet and Seraphina love sports, especially soccer," an insider told In Touch in 2019. "They play in tournaments with other kids but also have a blast practicing with Ben in his backyard! Samuel gets involved, too."
But even though the kids might not be interested in entertainment, Ben Affleck couldn't be happier about their love for sports. The actor has opened up about Samuel's love for baseball and how much he enjoys getting involved like totally normal, not famous dad. "I'm a coach on the Little League team and it's going great," he gushed to Ellen DeGeneres in 2019. "He's awesome, it's a lot of fun. The kids are great kids. I do have to wear a Dodgers hat because that is the team, but you know. "
Ben, of course, is a diehard baseball fan who has long supported his hometown team, the Boston Red Sox. Despite inheriting his father's love for baseball, however, Samuel wants no part in rooting for the Red Sox, as revealed during a 2019 appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Still, Ben remains just as proud to coach his son. "It's one of those things, you love it so much, it's like the dad dream Coaching your son or your daughter on their Little League team, it's very exciting and people have been very cool," he told DeGeneres.
They get along with Jennifer Lopez's kids
Following his July 2022 wedding to fellow superstar Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck and his new bride were faced with the task of blending their five kids. In addition to Affleck's three children, Lopez shares twins Max and Emme Muñiz with ex-husband Marc Anthony. "The transition is a process that needs to be handled with so much care," Lopez told Vogue in November 2022. "They have so many feelings. They're teens. But it's going really well so far." Speaking on what the future would look like for their blended family, Lopez shared that one day, the kids would learn to trust her and Affleck completely. "What I hope to cultivate with our family is that his kids have a new ally in me and my kids have a new ally in him," she said. In August 2022, all five kids walked down the aisle at Lopez and Affleck's second wedding ceremony.
And while they are seemingly still warming up to their new stepparents, the kids have no problem with each other. Ahead of the 2022 holiday season, a source confirmed that things are going well among the brood. "They all really have respect for each other," the insider divulged to ET. "Jen's relationship with Ben's kids is natural and same goes for Ben's bond with Jen's kids." Emme and Seraphina especially appear to be getting on great, as the two have been photographed hanging out on multiple occasions.
The Garner-Affleck kids don't think their parents are cool
While it's tempting to assume playing Batman would forever earn you points with your kids, Ben Affleck's brood proves otherwise. "I don't think I'm that cool anyway, but whoever you are, if you're somebody's parent, you're not cool to somebody in the world," Ben told Extra in 2021. The Oscar winner noted that trying to be hip while catching up with his children is easier said than done, as he ultimately feels as though he's way too out of the loop — and he's learned to be fine with that. "That's part of life. You realize there's something kind of healthy about embarrassing your kids. They say, ['Be quiet, Dad.'] ... I find myself being that person that I never thought I would be," he added.
Similarly, Garner's parenting antics and her constant refusal to budge to the children's requests has earned her the buzzkill status. "If you're like me, I kill the fun," she admitted to Jimmy Fallon in 2019. "I am so lame. I say no to everything. They call me the dragon. They have all these names for me." To make it up to them though, the "13 Going on 30" star has a "Yes Day" when she grants all of their requests. Now that's how you Razzle dazzle 'em.
