10 Essential Details About Mauricio Umansky
Mauricio Umansky, the husband of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Kyle Richards, is widely considered one of the hottest husbands on the show, if not the entire franchise. Of course, Umansky is more than just a handsome face and chiseled body. He is a highly successful real estate mogul and entrepreneur who boasts impressive clientele and multi-million dollar listings.
Umansky co-founded his own real estate agency called The Agency in 2011. "We wanted to tell stories and sell a lifestyle, not just a three-bedroom condo," he told Forbes. And selling that lifestyle has paid off in spades. According to the publication, The Agency had raked in a staggering $41 billion in sales as of May 2022.
Umansky is now branching out, starring in his own reality TV series on Netflix, "Buying Beverly Hills." The show follows Umansky and his agents, including his daughters Alexia and Farrah, as they negotiate sales, a cutthroat industry, and of course, engage in just a little bit of drama. As Umansky steps into the spotlight, let's take a closer look at some key details of his life and career.
He comes from a very successful family
Mauricio Umansky is wildly successful in business and real estate, a skill he inherited from his father. Eduardo Umansky graduated from the National University of Mexico with an accounting degree then pursued multiple business ventures such as textile manufacturing and real estate. In fact, the elder Umansky is a co-founder of The Agency.
Umansky's mother, Dr. Estella Sneider, is a star in her own right. Sneider earned a PhD in psychology from the California Graduate Institute in 1986 and is a licensed psychologist and sex therapist. She has hosted the TV show "Doctor Corazón" and "LIVE Today with John Johnson & Dr. Estella Sneider" on LA Talk Radio. According to her LinkedIn profile, she has two upcoming books in the works, "SEXploration: GPS to Ecstasy" and "SEXploration: Penis Personality!"
Fans of "RHOBH" have seen Dr. Estella on the show, including the episode in which she underwent a facelift procedure. It seemed a bit scary, but we must admit she looks incredible.
Fashion was his first calling
Mauricio Umansky is such a natural when it comes to real estate, but he started his career in a different field entirely. Umansky started a clothing company called 90265 when he was fresh out of college. The name came from Malibu's zip code and the company focused on women's fashion. "I started the fad of oversized T-shirts on girls wearing leggings," Umansky said in an interview with Worth. Whether or not that is accurate, 90265 was in fact quite successful. So much so that Umansky was able to sell the company for profit when he was just 26 years old.
Although Umansky went on to pursue his other passions which led to his flourishing real estate career, it seems the fashion world acted as a solid jumping-off point for his future endeavors. "I enjoyed the business and I learned a lot along the way before ultimately selling it," he said in an interview with Livabl.
He had health issues as a child
Considered to be one of Bravo's hottest "Real Housewives" husbands, Mauricio Umansky appears to be the picture of health. He has a regular workout routine and counts wakeboarding, snow sports, and golf among his many outdoor hobbies. But as a child, Umansky suffered from neutropenia, a rare disease that affected his ability to fight off infections and resulted in many hospitalizations.
In a 2020 episode of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," Umansky's wife, Kyle Richards, revealed more about her husband's condition. "When Mauricio was born, he had a blood disease called neutropenia. And he spent a good part of his life in Children's Hospital," she explained.
Luckily, Umansky survived the rare disorder and now devotes time to raising awareness about neutropenia and participating in charity events that benefit Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. In 2014, Umansky's mother, Dr. Estella Sneider, shared an adorable video of her and her son dancing as part of the 15-second dance challenge for neutropenia.
His important rule at The Agency
Mauricio Umansky takes his business seriously, and has worked to cultivate a collaborative atmosphere within The Agency. What's his secret to a comfortable and efficient work environment? One simple rule: no a**holes. Umansky explained his rule in an interview with Inman, saying, "I created the no a**hole rule at my company because we want to be able to share. We want to be able to be able to have collaboration in the company, we want everybody to trust each other, and if there's an a**hole then we can't trust each other...one bad seed really can destroy the entire company..." The Agency's website even states this not just as a rule, but the company's number one rule.
While not wanting a bad apple in the mix makes perfect sense, Umansky has other business practices that are a bit less conventional. For example, experience means less to him than a prospective employee's personality. "We definitely look at characteristics more than a resume," Umansky told Business Insider. "I mean, a lot of employees don't even need to be in real estate." With the amazing success of The Agency, it seems Umansky must be on to something.
His A-list clientele
Mauricio Umansky has been in the real estate game selling luxury properties since 1996. So it is no surprise that Umansky has worked with some of Hollywood's elite. Back in 2002, Umansky was working with A-list clients such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and then-wife Maria Shriver. The couple purchased a sprawling five-bedroom home in Brentwood, California, for a staggering $11.9 million. Umansky, with brother-in-law Rick Hilton, were among those who brokered the deal (via EW).
In 2014, Lady Gaga purchased a lavish home in Malibu boasting five bedrooms, a whopping 12 bathrooms, a saltwater pool, a home theater, a wine cellar, and even a bowling alley. The property's grounds included a bocce ball court, a guest cottage, a stable, and a dressage ring. Umansky brokered the $23 million deal (via The Los Angeles Times). Lady Gaga isn't the only pop royalty to have worked with Umansky. According to Ventura Blvd, Umansky's clients have also included Prince and Michael Jackson. Talk about star power!
His multicultural background
While Mauricio Umansky has made a fortune selling properties in and around Southern California, he is not a native of the area. Umansky is of Greek and Russian descent, but born in Mexico, where he lived until he was six-years-old (via Bravo).
Umansky is bilingual, a fluent Spanish speaker, as are his daughters. His wife, Kyle Richards, whose childhood inspired the short-lived sitcom "American Woman," loves when Umansky speaks Spanish. She's pretty good at it herself. In a tweet from 2020, she said, "I spoke Spanish growing up but when I met my husband some of his family didn't speak English so I had to study Spanish so we could converse."
Umansky is also Jewish, and his wife converted to Judaism before they tied the knot in 1996. In 2021, the couple's youngest daughter, Portia, celebrated her Bat Mitzvah with an extravagant circus-themed soiree.
He's been on plenty of reality TV shows
Fans of "RHOBH" were first introduced to Mauricio Umansky as Kyle Richards' husband when the show premiered in 2010. Although Umansky tries to avoid "Housewives"-level drama, he's not shy in front of the camera. In fact, Umansky has appeared on many reality TV shows over the years.
Umansky is a Bravo TV favorite, appearing on the network's hit show "Million Dollar Listing." Notably, two of the show's longtime cast members, James Harris and David Parnes, work for The Agency, where Umansky is the CEO.
Umansky has also appeared on ABC Family's "Job or No Job" and E! network's "Rich Kids of Beverly Hills," both in 2015. In November 2022, Umansky's own reality show, "Buying Beverly Hills," premiered on Netflix. The show follows Umansky at work for The Agency, where he is joined by daughter Alexia and stepdaughter Farrah who are learning the ins and outs of the business. The show features amazing properties, family bonding, and good old-fashioned reality TV drama.
The business drama between he and the Hiltons
Speaking of drama, some very real discord went down between Mauricio Umansky and his wife's family, the Hiltons. Umansky worked for his brother-in-law, Rick Hilton, for many years at Hilton's real estate agency, Hilton & Hyland. When Umansky eventually left to start The Agency, he was accused of stealing some of Hilton's clients. The feud between the brothers-in-law spilled over into their wives, Kathy Hilton and Kyle Richard's, relationship, causing all sorts of family drama. The Umanskys were even uninvited to Nicky Hilton's wedding.
Umansky denied poaching Rick Hilton's clients in a statement to Cosmopolitan UK. "Rick and I did make a pact about recruiting and I never did poach an agent from his firm," part of the statement read. "If an agent reached out on their own, we welcomed them."
In a 2019 interview with Inman, Umansky claimed that he and Hilton had since buried the hatchet, saying, "We're good. We've made up, we're family ... We've been good for over a year. We were definitely in a fight for a while. And it was real. But the families have made up and it was fantastic."
Buying Beverly Hills has brought him closer to his daughters
Mauricio Umansky will be taking center stage in his own reality show "Buying Beverly Hills," which will follow the behind-the-scenes drama at The Agency. Umansky is joined by his daughters, Farrah and Alexia, as they find their footing as successful agents in their own right. Farrah and Alexia admitted they were initially intimidated by the prospect of putting their lives on display.
Alexia admitted to People, "It's really scary putting your career out there for people to see, especially when you're trying so hard to make it and prove something." Similarly, Farrah told US Weekly, "Obviously, family is something you wanna protect and going on a public platform and just laying it all on the table with family and with what's going on in your professional life — there's always a little bit of a risk there."
While there are sure to be some tense moments, the experience seemed to bring Umansky and his daughters even closer together. "Working with my family and my kids has been absolutely extraordinary," he told People. "They teach me something every single day and I love it. The fact that I get to do everything in my life with them both at work and at home, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's a dream."
He's Kyle Richards' ride or die
Fans of "RHOBH" know Mauricio Umansky first and foremost as Kyle Richards' husband. Watching the show, it appears the two have a near-perfect marriage. The truth is...they really do. The couple met in 1994 and have been married since 1996. They have three daughters together, Alexia, Sophia, and Portia, along with Richards' daughter from her first marriage, Farrah Aldjufrie. They've been featured on "RHOBH" since 2010, and unlike many other "Real Housewives" marriages, the spotlight seems to have only brought Umansky and Richards closer. On Us Weekly's "Getting Real With The Housewives" podcast, Farrah said, "[The show] has definitely has made them stronger 100 percent and they are just the cutest honestly."
And that is no small feat, considering the onslaught of drama each season of "RHOBH" brings. But no matter what situation Richards finds herself in, she can count on Umansky to have her back. During Season 12 of "RHOBH," Richards and her sister Kathy Hilton were feuding again. Without question, Umansky publicly stood up for his wife. "I know a lot of the stuff that's going on in the background, which isn't exactly what's being put out there," he told US Weekly. "Being supportive of Kyle, I think Kyle's a hundred percent in the right here without question." He added, "Kyle's so strong and she's such a good person..."
Given Umansky's history with the Hilton's, it's admirable that he didn't back down from defending his wife. Yes, Mauricio Umansky is hot and extremely wealthy, but it's his devotion that makes him such a great catch. Lucky you, Kyle Richards!
