What Olivier Sarkozy Has Been Up To Since His Divorce From Mary-Kate Olsen
On April 17, 2020, Mary-Kate Olsen split from her husband of five years, French banker Olivier Sarkozy. The former child star and fashion mogul made headlines after it was revealed that she had filed an emergency petition to divorce Sarkozy and was denied by New York courts due to COVID-19 restrictions (per TMZ). In her divorce filings, it was stated that Sarkozy — the half-brother of former French president Nicholas Sarkozy — asked Olsen to move out of their NYC apartment after he allegedly terminated their lease without her knowledge. Olsen also reportedly requested for their prenuptial agreement to be enforced.
According to People, the couple's "inability to see eye to eye" on matters such as starting a family led to their split. Another factor was apparently Olsen's career. "Mary-Kate is extremely hard working and focused on her business," a source told the outlet. "Olivier never understood her drive and passion. He would have loved to have a stay-at-home wife." Olsen officially filed for divorce on May 25, 2020; by January 2021, she and Sarkozy had finally reached a settlement. Though details of their agreement were sealed, a source told Entertainment Tonight it "was reached amicably" and "everyone is looking forward to moving on."
Since the settlement, Olsen and Sarkozy have largely stayed out of the spotlight, with the former actor reportedly keeping busy with her fashion empire, including her famous brand, The Row. As for Sarkozy? Well, here's what the financier has been up to since he and Olsen went their separate ways.
Olivier Sarkozy sparked romance rumors with Elle Macpherson
More than a year after finalizing his divorce from Mary-Kate Olsen, Olivier Sarkozy reportedly jumped back into the dating scene. The French banker sparked rumors he was dating Australian supermodel and actor Elle Macpherson after the two were spotted attending an Elton John concert in New York last February. A witness reported to the gossip page Deuxmoi that the pair "looked very cozy" and were "having a great time" as they watched the show. "She's beautiful!" the insider said of Sarkozy's date. "Turns out it was Elle Macpherson!" Another onlooker confirmed the news to the Mirror, saying the two seemed like a couple. "They seemed really happy together. It looked like they could be a new item."
However, it was later reported that Macpherson was seeing Texas-born musician (and Renée Zellweger's former boyfriend) Doyle Bramhall II. The pair went public with their romance in September, holding hands while out and about at Paris Fashion Week, according to the Daily Mail. The news came 10 months after the Australian beauty confirmed her split from the disgraced doctor and notorious anti-vaxxer Andrew Wakefield. "As a spokesperson for Elle I can unequivocally confirm that the relationship between Elle and Dr. Wakefield terminated almost two years ago," a rep for Macpherson told the Daily Mail in 2021.
Per Bravo, Macpherson was previously married to billionaire Jeffrey Soffer and fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon. She also shares two sons, Cy and Flynn, with her former partner, French financier Arpad Busson.
Olivier Sarkozy sold his Manhattan townhouse
In August 2021, Olivier Sarkozy sold the Manhattan townhouse that he and his ex-wife Mary-Kate Olsen were supposed to live in together. The French banker bought the historic property in 2014 for $13.5 million and, per Architectural Digest, spent seven years "gutting" and renovating the place. According to the New York Post, it was where he and Olsen appear to have held their wedding reception when they tied the knot on November 27, 2015. Sarkozy reportedly listed the townhouse for sale in August 2021 for $11.5 million, before listing it again for $10.5 million in April this year. Finally, it sold for $10.3 million to Deborah Osburn, founder of the online tile company Clé Tile, according to the Wall Street Journal. "I couldn't get it out of my head," Osburn told the publication. "More creativity than I could imagine is oozing out of the walls of this house."
Aside from the property, Sarkozy and Olsen also shared a multi-million dollar mansion in the Hamptons during their marriage — one where the financier famously homed his ex-wife Charlotte and their kids to keep them safe from COVID-19 back in May 2020. As Page Six reports, it may have been the straw that broke the camel's back (so to speak) in Sarkozy and Olsen's five-year marriage and prompted the former child star to file for divorce.
