Can Sarah Hyland Really Sing?
Sarah Hyland is probably best known for playing the party girl turned mom to twins Haley Dunphy on "Modern Family." The star took on the role for over a decade, joining the likes of Ty Burrell, Ed O'Neill, Sofía Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Ariel Winter for a whopping 11 seasons of the comedy between 2009 and 2020. "I'm just so grateful for the last 11 years," she admitted to Glamour in 2020 as the show drew to a close, revealing she really began to get emotional when she saw Burrell, who played her on-screen dad Phil Dunphy, getting emotional during the final day of filming. "I started bawling, which actually made me feel really happy. I was like, I'm not an ice queen! In the end, all of us — me, Ty, Julie [Bowen], Ariel, Nolan [Gould] were in each other's arms and sobbing. It was really amazing and cathartic to be able to have that with everyone," she recalled.
But, all good things must come to an end, and now "Modern Family" has offically wrapped up, Hyland has her sights set on new beginnings — and that may just include a singing career. But can this star, who's best known for her acting skills, really sing?
Sarah Hyland once performed at the Teen Choice Awards
Sarah Hyland has shown off her singing skills in public on multiple occasions, with one of the most notable times coming when she performed at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards. The actor turned singer took to the stage to debut the song "Met At A Party" alongside Jordan McGraw (who just so happens to be the son of none other than Dr. Phil!), per Entertainment Tonight, and it's safe to say that fans were impressed. Twitter was flooded with praise (and surprise!) as Hyland's voice was heard by a mainstream audience for one of the first times. "@Sarah_Hyland Sarah [you're] the most amazing singer dam girl," one person tweeted. "Right now i am watching the #2019 teen choice Awards and dam girl u and @Jorden killed it on stage," they added. Another shared their surprise, tweeting, "I didn't know Sarah Hyland can sing and is a singer."
But that actually wasn't the first time Hyland has shown off her powerful voice in a public way. Three years earlier, she wowed the world when she teamed up with the band Boyce Avenue to perform a stripped down cover of The Chainsmokers and Halsey's hit "Closer," which was posted to their YouTube.
Is Sarah Hyland pursuing a singing career?
It seems like Sarah Hyland is a little more focused on acting than singing right now, but that doesn't mean she can't combine her true loves! Hyland showed off her incredible voice once again in Peacock's "Pitch Perfect" spin-off series, "Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin," in which she reunited with her "Modern Family" onscreen boyfriend Adam Devine. In a sneak peek released by E! News in November, Hyland performed an original song written by One Republic's Ryan Tedder, and she admitted to Parade one day after the sneak peek dropped that she was particularly excited to be able to show off her pipes while acting at the same time. "I really love singing and I've sung my whole life and I've done theater, so I wanted to work with Adam again and I wanted to sing and it just timed up perfectly," she said.
Hyland also revealed during an exclusive interview with our friends at The List that she really related to her character, Heidi, and loved that she had the chance to sing. "Signing onto this show was putting myself out there the way that Heidi should — maybe she does during the show, you'll have to watch — of being like, 'No, I want people to know that this is a facet of my life and something that I can do and something that I'm passionate about, which is singing,'" the "Love Island: USA" host shared.
