Inside Beyonce's Relationship With Her Sister Solange
Beyoncé and Solange Knowles have a lot in common in terms of their music careers, but that might be where the similarities end. They each took different paths after their formative years, with Beyoncé attaining international superstardom and Solange becoming a single mom and a divorcée by the time she was 21 years old. Despite their differences, the love that Beyoncé has for her little sister is unparalleled, and we're here to give you a glimpse inside their unique relationship.
Beyonce is Solange's biggest fan
In 2017, Solange sat down with Interview magazine to discuss her critically acclaimed album, A Seat at the Table. And just who did the honors of interviewing her? Her big sis, Beyoncé, of course!
In the candid Q&A session, the sisters chatted back and forth just like regular siblings, but with one major difference: Beyoncé fangirled over her sister the entire time. When Solange mentioned she would have to be driven from Philadelphia to New York after the interview, Beyoncé called her a "rock star," before further praising her younger sibling.
"Well, it is a bit strange, because we're sisters and we talk all the time, to be interviewing you," the "Formation" singer said. "But I'm so happy to interview you because, clearly, I'm your biggest fan and I'm super proud of you." Aww!
They'll fight for each other
The sisters have a history of being very protective of each other. In an interview with BET's 106 & Park (via Rap-Up), Solange answered a question about she reacted when she saw the now-infamous video of a fan slapping Beyoncé on the butt during one of her concerts. Solange responded, "That's taking it too far. He would've got slapped back."
Sounds like if Solange had been at the show, she would've hit him!
As to be expected, Beyoncé is equally as vigilant when it comes to her sister. In a radio interview with Hot 97 (via Rap-Up), Solange recalled how privileged she was to grow up with Beyoncé as her sibling. Back when Beyoncé was in her former group, Destiny's Child, and their hit song "No, No, No" was blowing up the radio, Solange was in high school, dealing with a menacing bully. When Solange told Beyoncé and her Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland about the antagonizer, the celebs took a trip to Solange's school to confront her classmate.
"They were coming to beat him up," Solange said, "but it was Destiny's Child coming to beat him up."
A big sister is the best role model
In 2012, Solange gushed to Rollacoaster magazine (via Daily Mail) about Beyoncé, calling her sister her "role model" and crediting the "Irreplaceable" singer for helping her with her own music career.
"She was and is such a role model," Solange began, "but I think more so it was an insane learning process for me to have a big sister like that — to be able to see the good, the bad and everything in between that comes with fame and success, and to know what I was getting myself into."
However, even though she admires her sister and all that she has accomplished, Solange would never want to trade places with Queen Bey. Why? "I really enjoy my privacy and being able to walk my son to school every morning and pick him up every afternoon," she said.
Beyonce convinced Solange to make a major move
Since Jay-Z is from Brooklyn, it makes sense that Beyoncé would have at least one home in her hubby's hometown. According to rumors reported by Curbed NY, the couple was said to have splurged on a Brooklyn Heights condo. But prior to that alleged purchase, they were reportedly living in an unknown location on the East Coast, and Beyoncé was desperately trying to convince Solange to make a move to the New York City borough.
"I've been trying to talk her into going to Brooklyn for six years," Beyoncé told the The New York Times in 2012. "It's so close to her personality. She's such a fashionista — she'll get used to it."
Solange finally conceded, thanks to the encouragement from her big sister, but she admitted the city took her some getting used to, especially the "intensity of the moms" in her Carroll Gardens neighborhood. "Everyone does so much yoga and drinks so much tea," Solange joked to the publication.
Who would refuse to record with Beyonce? Solange, that's who
Collaborating on a song with Beyoncé would be a dream come true for most artists, but Solange is different. She has her own lane in the music industry, carved out by indie-inspired R&B tunes that are in stark contrast to Beyoncé's high-intensity, nightclub-appropriate jams. Although she has co-penned various tunes for Beyoncé, including "Get Me Bodied" and "Upgrade U," don't hold your breath on the sisters recording a song together.
In an interview with the NY Times, Beyoncé revealed the shocking revelation. "My sister will not record with me," she shared. "She's her own woman."
Still, we're holding out hope that one day these two will connect in a recording studio. But until then, we'll just have to enjoy their music separately.
They babysit for each other
The more we discover about their relationship, the more we realize that Beyoncé and Solange behave just like any other siblings would. While speaking with Vulture, Solange said she sees her sister at least once a week and that they also take time to babysit for each other. Sometimes Blue Ivy stays at Solange's house, and, at other times, Solange's son, Daniel Julez Smith Jr., spends time in the Knowles-Carter household.
"Blue comes over, I babysit," Solange explained. "[Beyoncé] takes Julez sometimes for the weekend. [Blue] and Julez are going to grow up more like sister and brother than cousins."
Now that Beyoncé is a mother of three, Solange will probably have her hands full when it comes to babysitting duty!
Beyonce was there when Solange gave birth
When Solange gave birth to her son, Julez, in 2004, Beyoncé was front and center in the delivery room. Though, as the "Crazy in Love" singer told Cosmopolitan, she initially didn't want to witness her nephew's birth.
"I didn't want to be in the delivery room, because I thought I would never want to [give birth]," Beyoncé said. "But I was moved by the experience, so it didn't make me not want to have kids. It's made me want to wait a while. I babysat for my nephew last week, and [motherhood] is not as glamorous as it looks."
Of course, she ended up changing her mind about the whole kids thing and went on to give birth to Blue Ivy in 2012 and twins Sir and Rumi in 2017.
It took them a while to become 'super close'
Beyoncé had a unique relationship with her sister during their early years because — lets face it — she was a very busy girl and an international diva-in-training. Her time was also consumed with hanging out with her best friend and group member, Kelly Rowland, who lived with the Knowles in their family home.
Solange revealed in an interview with Evening Standard that she was 5 years old when Rowland moved in. "[Rowland's] mother was a nanny for another family, so Kelly lived with us when they first moved from Atlanta. She was like a second sister," Solange said. However, she found it tough having to share her actual sister with Rowland. Still, Solange and Beyoncé always managed to remain "very sweet with each other." Solange also credited their five-year age difference with allowing them to have a strong relationship, even if it took them some time to get to that point.
"I'm sure if we were closer in age we wouldn't have gotten along so great," Solange said to the website. "But we've been super-close ever since I was about 13."
Is Beyonce her mom?
Conspiracy theorists are convinced that there's no way Beyoncé and Solange could be siblings. Instead, they believe a wacky online rumor that Beyoncé is actually Solange's mom. If you're rolling your eyes in disbelief right now, don't worry — you're not alone.
In March 2013, BuzzFeed published an article, citing an uncredited blog, which rehashes the rumor that Beyoncé wasn't born in 1981 and that Queen Bey's real birth year is actually 1974. The conspiracy goes on to say that the singer gave birth to Solange at the age of either 12 or 13, but her parents, Mathew and Tina, ended up raising Solange to cover up the family secret.
The sisters have never spoken out about the rumor, and, since there are countless throwback pictures of them together when they were both very young, we're going to chalk this one up to being nothing more than an Internet fable.
They rarely ever argue
Some siblings fight with one another from the time they're old enough to talk. But according to Solange, she and Beyoncé hardly ever disagree with each other.
During a Q&A session with Interview magazine, in which Beyoncé interviewed Solange, the "Halo" singer asked her younger sibling, "... honestly, growing up, how did I do as a big sister?" Solange replied, "You did a kicka** job. You were the most patient, loving, wonderful sister ever. In the 30 years that we've been together, I think we've only really, like, butted heads ... we can count on one hand."
Now that's what we call a "Flawless" sisterhood.
