Lady Gaga Debuts Emotional Music Video For 'Joanne'
The "Just Dance" singer got serious for her new video.
Late on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) released the music video for a piano version of her song "Joanne," a track off of her album of the same name. And it's a tearjerker.
The video begins with a few lines of text, explaining that the sister of Gaga's father was named Joanne. Unfortunately, she tragically died at age 19 due to lupus, an autoimmune disease. Gaga noted that her dad was just 15 years old when he lost his older sister.
The rest of the video features Gaga belting out emotional lyrics like, "Take my hand / Stay, Joanne / Heaven's not ready for you" and "Every part / Of my aching heart / Needs you more / Than the angels do." The visuals follow Gaga playing the piano and running through the woods with a guitar. Gaga is later seen dancing, laughing, and playing pool in a bar with friends.
"Call me Joanne / xo, Joanne / xoxo, Joanne," she sings at the end of the song — an addition to the previous version of the track. Text in the video then reads, "Joanne Stefani Germanotta 03.12.55 – 12.18.74."
Gaga previously spoke to E! News about her late aunt, revealing how her memory has influenced her. "My connection to her has been strong my whole life," she explained. "I always wondered what it was—the mystery of Joanne—this person that I never got to meet that was an absolute tornado of both love and tragedy."
She added, "She was a powerful, beautiful force in my family's life and then it's like a beautiful light that just goes out, so I've always used the fact that she didn't get to live the rest of her life as a sense of strength and power within me that I have to go out and live the rest for her."
