The Reason Calvin Harris Is Done Working With Dua Lipa

Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa are both successful artists in their own right. Harris – a prominent DJ from Scotland – began his music career in 2007, and has since created a string of hits. During his tenure, the "Sweet Nothing" producer has amassed UK No. 1 singles and four Billboard Top 10 hits. From collaborations with Rihanna to Katy Perry, Harris has worked with some of the biggest names in music. And, like his other efforts, his partnership with Lipa proved to be just as fruitful.

In 2018, Harris and Lipa joined forces for the single "One Kiss" after the DJ slid into Lipa's direct messages. "I DM'd her on Twitter," Harris revealed on "The Graham Norton Show." He further explained that the two first met at an event two years prior to their collaboration, but that their meeting was "brief." The song went on to spend eight weeks at No. 1 in the U.K. and was nominated for song of the summer at the 2018 MTV Music Video Awards.

Harris and the "New Rules" singer reunited in 2022 — alongside rapper Young Thug — for the song, "Potion." Despite their seemingly beneficial partnership, Harris has made it clear that he will likely not work with Lipa again.

Calvin Harris says a third collab would be pushing it

There's no doubt that Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa have a great creative relationship. However, Harris does not tend to ever work with his friend again. "I feel like sometimes as a rule it's just the one. I actually wouldn't have done a second," Harris said, during an appearance on BBC Radio 2's "The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show," per Express. He added, "Probably a third would be pushing it." The producer went on to explain that the only other artist he has ever worked with more than once was Florence + The Machine — who he partnered with for "Sweet Nothing" and the remix to "Spectrum."

Despite Harris' hesitation to reconnect with Lipa for another musical attempt, "Potion," has performed well. The single spent 12 weeks on the Official Singles Chart Top 100 in the U.K., peaking at No. 16. The music video has nearly 30 million times on YouTube at the time of writing.

Calvin Harris' new album is full of collabs

Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa's single "Potion" is just one of many collaborations that appears on Harris' album, "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2." The project – a follow-up to 2017's "Vol. 1" – features artists that Harris has always wanted to work with. "Honestly, for me, just from the viewpoint of music that I listened to growing up, getting Pharrell and Pusha T on a song was big," he said in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music. "Getting Pharrell and Justin Timberlake, and Halsey on a song felt amazing to me and like such an amazing experience. It was those two that stood out in that respect." Ultimately, Harris' desire to work with Timberlake proved to be very fruitful. Their song "Stay With Me," which also features Halsey," reached the Top 10 in the United Kingdom.

The album has received rave reviews from fans. "Silky smooth, half way thru, already a summer favorite," one person tweeted. Another suggested there were "no skips" on the entire album.
