Inside Bradley Cooper's Friendship With Leonardo DiCaprio
There are few things we love more than an A-list friendship, like that of Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio, but what do we know about this famous duo?
Leonardo DiCaprio might have an — ahem — extensive dating history, but when it comes to his friendships, he's a ride-or-die of note. His decades-long friendship with Tobey Maguire is well-documented, as is his super-close dynamic with his "Titanic" co-star Kate Winslet. It's no surprise, then, that DiCaprio's connection with Cooper also goes way back. In fact, in 2012, Cooper told ShortList that their first meeting took place in the 90s, soon after "Titanic" wasreleased. At the time, Cooper was working as a doorman to support himself through grad school, and had shown DiCaprio and his friends to their room. "I remember thinking how I was three feet away from this guy, and we were worlds apart," he recounted to the publication.
Luckily for Cooper, that's no longer the case. On top of being a nine-time Oscar nominee himself (who can forget how long it took for DiCaprio to bag his own Academy Award?), today, he even counts DiCaprio as part of his inner circle. But aside from similar accolades and being in the same business, what is it that keeps these two so close?
Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio are both close to their moms
Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio could surely bond over their shared Hollywood star status, but they're also both super close with their moms ... and something tells us that has played a role in their enduring friendship.
Let's start with DiCaprio. The actor has never made a secret of his deep love for his mom. She's been his date to countless award shows and premieres over the years — oh, and who could forget that time he outbid Paris Hilton to secure her a Chanel bag (via Elle)? DiCaprio even gave his mom a sweet shout-out in his acceptance speech at the 2016 BAFTAs, gushing, "This woman drove me three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity." As for Cooper, his closeness to his mother was revealed in 2013, when he shared that they were living together to cope with his dad's death. As he told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show," (via The Chicago Tribune), "Where I'm from it's like there's no choice ... I come from an Italian neighborhood, and I couldn't do it any other way." Luckily for both of them, he added, "She's a cool chick. We can hang."
As for how this impacts the actors' friendship, it's clear these two have recognized their shared bond with their respective moms. Exhibit A: the 2014 Golden Globes. Per Hello, both actors took their moms as dates, and they even posed together as a squad!
Despite regular hangouts, they seldom speak of their bond
When they're not having sweet mother-son double dates, Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio can also often be spotted hanging out together, doing everything from poolside hangs, to catching dinner in Malibu and, of course, greeting each other on the red carpet. In fact, a quick scroll through Google will show the two pictured together on countless occasions.
That said, don't expect DiCaprio to speak out much about their bond, as he's known to stay pretty quiet about his personal relationships. The "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" actor told E! News that he tries to keep his personal life as private as possible. "To me, what's always paramount is the work, and I want to continue to do this ... and other than that I think everyone just wants to have their private life and have that remain somewhat sacred," he explained. Cooper has also never spoken to the press about his friendship with DiCaprio — and given that, in 2015 TMZ reported that he was suing a French magazine for violating his privacy by publicizing his relationship with Irina Shayk, we can't say we're shocked. Interestingly, the same TMZ report revealed that DiCaprio had previously sued the same publication for writing about his rumored fling with Rihanna. An A-lister take on friendship bracelets, maybe?
Despite remaining tight-lipped, though, it's clear these two have a genuinely close relationship — and that's enough to keep us smiling.
