Why Charlize Theron May Never Get Married
Charlize Theron has long been a topic of discussion. With her illustrious work in modeling, acting, and even producing, she is always in the limelight. With an amazing career spanning four decades, fans are curious to know more about the personal life of the Hollywood starlet.
Considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the world, the South African actor has been in several high-profile relationships. This has led to rumors in the media, that Theron could not easily escape.
Even when she's not in a relationship, people seem to be curious about what's going on with the actor's love life. Many interviewers have questioned when she is going to get married, if at all. The star described herself as "shockingly available" in an interview with ET, and revealed that she doesn't see herself getting married. While this might be a surprise to some, Theron has been very vocal about her decision, stating on the Howard Stern Show, "I've never felt alone," without a man. While her choice is obviously the best decision for her, it's easy for people to wonder: Why hasn't Charlize Theron ever been married?
Her tumultuous childhood affected her parenting perspective
Charlize Theron had a tumultuous childhood, where she saw firsthand what dysfunction can do to a household. On "The Drew Barrymore Show," she revealed that's something that she did not want to recreate for her daughters. "I am so proud of the fact that my kids live in a home where they feel safe, and they feel like they're never gonna have to walk on eggshells ..." she told the talk show host.
According to Theron, her young life was unpredictable. In an interview with NPR, she said, "My father was a sick man. My father was an alcoholic all my life." The actor dealt with severe verbal abuse from him. According to ABC News, one night her father came home drunk and armed, along with her uncle. Agitated, he threatened Theron and her mother, Gerda Maritz, saying, "Tonight I'm going to kill you both with the shotgun."
Her father would then shoot at Theron's room door as they hid, luckily not harming anyone in the process. The terror only ended when Maritz got her own gun and fired at both Theron's father and her uncle. The uncle was left injured after the shooting, but her father succumbed to his injuries and died that night.

Marriage isn't important to her
Charlize Theron has never shied away from companionship. The actor has been linked to several partners during her career, including Stuart Townsend and Sean Penn. Despite having long-term relationships in the past, Theron admitted that marriage was never the end goal for her. In an interview with Howard Stern, she divulged to the host, "I've never wanted to get married. That's never been something that's important to me." She even went on to clarify that despite reports, she wasn't engaged to actor Sean Penn, and she never planned to be. "I was never going to marry him," she told Stern.
In a 2014 interview with Vogue, Theron said, "I never had the dream of the white dress. And watching other people getting married? I think it's beautiful for them, but to be quite honest, usually I'm sitting there just devastated."
She and Penn split in 2015, and she seemed matter-of-fact about the breakup, telling The Wall Street Journal, "We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That's it." Theron added that there was no drama to the split, and that just because celebrities part ways, it doesn't always involve behind-the-scenes wildness.
Charlize Theron prefers her space
Charlize Theron does not see herself shifting and letting a man move into her house. Despite having an impressive real estate portfolio, according to The Dirt, a potential partner would have to live elsewhere. She told Howard Stern, "I don't know if I'll ever be able to live with somebody again, to be totally frank, they might have to buy the house next to me because I don't know if I'm going to be able to f***ing deal with that ever again. I'm too old for that sh**."
The last person to live with the "Mad Max" actor was actor Stuart Townsend. The stars met in 2001, when they co-starred in the movie "Trapped." When the couple first started dating, Theron admitted to Marie Claire that she didn't see the relationship developing into anything serious. Despite her reservations, the two quickly fell in love. She would later address their relationship status with People, stating that despite not having a certificate, they considered themselves married. Townsend bought the actor a ring to solidify their commitment. "I found this old Victorian ring with little forget-me-nots," Townsend admitted. "I gave it to her as a sign of our commitment to each other. She's never taken it off."
The couple split in 2009. A source told the Daily Mail that Theron reportedly ended the relationship because "They had become more like brother and sister than lovers."
The actor is focused on her family
Charlize Theron has two adopted daughters, Jackson and August. It's not uncommon for people's perspectives to change after becoming a parent, and Theron is no different. She revealed that parenthood affected her desire for companionship. In an interview on "The Drew Barrymore Show," she admitted, "My life with my children and my incredible adopted family that I have around me, I don't long for that much. I can honestly say this, on my life, I don't feel lonely,"
Theron has the family she always wanted. She adopted Jackson in 2012, and would later adopt August in 2015. The actor told People, "I was always honest with my partners, that adoption was how my family would look one day." In the interview, she boasts about how happy the two made her, and ideally always wanted more than one child to raise.
The actor has been able to cultivate a strong support system to help with her children, new puppies, and thriving career. According to US Weekly, while originally she wanted to handle everything herself, she realized that asking for help benefited both her and her kids. "Every single person in my life who is like my family has just stepped in and it's really meant a lot to me. Tonight, I was literally, like, writing [while] a friend of mine was watching the puppies. My mom is cooking dinner for the kids right now."
She wants someone that brings something to the table
Charlize Theron is enjoying her life right now and is feeling no rush to have just anybody around. Theron has reportedly been single for several years and has no plan on changing for just any relationship. According to the actor, anyone who walks into her life must bring something to the table. She continued to clarify on "The Drew Barrymore show," saying, "Not the kind of game that we think of, the kind of game that's like my life is really good so you better be able to bring that and maybe better because I just won't accept anything less."
Until that person comes along, Theron has revealed she's in a relationship with herself. In an interview on Diane von Furstenberg's "In Charge with DVF," she revealed having to explain that concept to her daughter and the importance of being by herself. "There is absolutely no shame in that game to be in relationship with yourself. To not fall into what society kind of predicts for us as what is socially acceptable: If you are not in a relationship, somehow you're a failure."
