The Truth About Hilaria Baldwin's Fertility Struggles
The following article includes mention of pregnancy loss.
ou might not suspect that Hilaria Baldwin, who welcomed her seventh child with husband Alec Baldwin (his eighth child) in September 2022, has struggled with infertility in the past. Unless you follow the yoga instructor and influencer on Instagram, that is. Baldwin is known for sharing regular updates about all the ups and downs of her life — especially when it comes to parenting and motherhood.
While Baldwin has been lucky enough to welcome seven kids of her own, it wasn't easy for her to get there. "After five babies out of my body, three chemical pregnancies, one miscarriage at 9 weeks, one at 4 months, and a round of IVF, resulting in Marilu — my body has gone on quite a journey for the family we have," she wrote on Instagram in June 2021. Let's take a closer look at her journey.
Hilaria Baldwin has spoken openly about two miscarriages
For National Infertility Awareness Week in April 2021, Hilaria Baldwin opened up about her two miscarriages in 2019. "I had two miscarriages in a row in 2019, the second at four months," Baldwin wrote in the lengthy caption next to a crying selfie on Instagram. "Today, this baby I cried for in this picture would have been about a year." Baldwin added that she thinks about the babies she lost every day. "We all have different fertility/infertility stories, and there are so many ways we can become parents," the caption continued. "I am just as much a mother to my angel babies as I am to the ones I can physically hold in my arms. If you are struggling, or have struggled — or will struggle — know that you are not alone."
Nearly a year later, when she was pregnant with her seventh child, Baldwin opened up again on Instagram. "As I approach the time when I lost the second baby in 2019, at 16 weeks, I get more nervous," she wrote. "I get asked all the time how to stay calm and make it through after loss. To be honest, it's hard to stay calm, even if someone hasn't experienced loss."
Fans are confused about Hilaria Baldwin's surrogate
Hilaria Baldwin isn't always a completely open book about her fertility. When she and Alec Baldwin announced the birth of their sixth baby just a few months after she gave birth to their fifth, fans realized that baby Maria Lucia (or Marilu), must have been conceived via surrogate when Baldwin was already pregnant with their fifth child, Eduardo, per People. But reps for the couple seemed kind of cagey about confirming the surrogacy. "It's no one's business about a woman's right to choose how and when she expands her family," a source told the publication. In one Instagram caption, Baldwin wrote that her body had not only carried five pregnancies, but also that one round of IVF "resulted in Marilu." This seemed to imply that Baldwin herself went through IVF when it would appear a surrogate was the gestational carrier for Marilu.
For as much as Hilaria has been open about struggling with fertility over the years, when she announced that she was expecting her seventh baby in March 2022, she wrote in the Instagram caption that the newest "Baldwinito" came as a surprise. "We were pretty sure our family was complete, and we're beyond happy with this surprise," Baldwin said. Six months later, baby Ilaria was born — which Hilaria also announced on Instagram.
