Who Inherited Alan Rickman's Money After His Death?
The death of English actor Alan Rickman — one of many celebs we sadly lost in 2016 — came as a shock to the public, largely due to his decision to keep his cancer diagnosis private, per BBC. Rickman, known for his theatrical roles in addition to his film roles in "Harry Potter" and "Die Hard," to name a few, had quite the professional resume but was less open about his life offscreen. Rima Horton was his partner for over 40 years — their relationship began decades prior to their marriage in 2012 (via E! News). By choice, the couple did not have any children, according to HuffPost Canada.
Following Rickman's death, many people were left wondering who would inherit the money he had made over his long career in the entertainment industry, with the late actor's net worth estimated to be around $16 million (per Celebrity Net Worth). Before he died, Rickman's last known work was a voiceover he recorded for charity (per BBC), and this theme appears to have continued into his will.
Alan Rickman left money to multiple charities in his will
In his will, Alan Rickman stipulated that £100,000 of his money should be divided and given to multiple charities, according to a report from the Mirror, in which it was additionally stated that Rickman's "net assets in the U.K. are thought to total more than £4 million." The charities named in his will were reportedly the Facial Surgery Research Foundation (Saving Faces), the International Performers Aid Trust, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), and Sponsored Arts for Education (via the Mirror). Rickman was himself a graduate of RADA and graduated with a diploma in acting, as mentioned on the RADA website.
The Mirror adds that Rickman gave "£25,000 to each of his three nieces," out of his reported £4,060,033 in assets, the majority of which was left to his wife, Rima Horton. According to his will, Rickman also held assets in the United States and Italy (via the Mirror). In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rickman once described "[spending] quite a bit of time in Italy," though he didn't provide further details.
Alan Rickman's personal diaries will be published
Diaries that Alan Rickman — who was once sworn to secrecy by "Harry Potter" author JK Rowling — wrote by hand during a period of over 25 years of his life will be published as a book by Canongate and edited by Alan Taylor, as reported by the Guardian. Some of the revelations from the book include Rickman's thoughts about working on the "Harry Potter" films, which has gotten the attention of fans of the series (via Entertainment Weekly).
Rickman's widow, Rima Horton, released a statement when the book was first announced, saying, "I'm delighted that Canongate will be publishing Alan's diaries, and couldn't have wished for a finer appointment of editor than Alan Taylor. The diaries reveal not just Alan Rickman the actor, but the real Alan – his sense of humour, his sharp observation, his craftsmanship and his devotion to the arts" (per the Guardian).
The book's publisher, Canongate, reports that the collection, now titled "Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries," will be released on October 4, 2022.
