The Shady Comment Katy Perry Made About Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress
The days and weeks leading up to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex's wedding, which occurred on May 19, 2018, inspired a media frenzy. People from all over the globe eagerly tried to predict how the wedding between Britain's most eligible bachelor and an American actress would turn out. Would Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, who'd sold personal stories about her to the media, be in attendance? (Spoiler: no, per TMZ). Would there be culture clashes between Markle and Prince Harry? Yeah... if you count some of the interesting reactions to The Kingdom Choir's rendition of "Stand By Me."
Of course the biggest question on people's minds: What would Meghan Markle's wedding dress look like? Between Markle's American roots, and this being her second wedding, after all, people were antsy to see just how the "Suits" actress would stylize her big day. Well, Markle ultimately went the conservative route with her dress (designed by Clare Waight Keller, Givenchy's creative director, per Brides), which hung slightly off her shoulder and draped loosely around her silhouette. And while many royal watchers felt that Markle stunned in her dress, which clocked in at around $256,000 according to Vanity Fair — making it one of the most expensive royal wedding dresses ever — Katy Perry was not exactly impressed.
Katy Perry didn't think Meghan Markle's dress fit
While promoting the 2018 "American Idol" finals, Katy Perry shared her thoughts on Markle, Duchess of Sussex's dress and they weren't exactly complimentary, per Entertainment Tonight. "I would have done one more fitting," Perry boldly asserted. "Kate, Kate, Kate won, Kate won! I'm sorry, I'm never not going to tell the truth! One more fitting, but I love you." Even though Perry wasn't the biggest fan of Markle's dress, she did have some really sweet things to say about her and Prince Harry earlier in the interview stating that she was "happy for them," adding that she supports Markle as "another woman," and loves and wishes she and Prince Harry well.
Apparently, Perry's comments didn't quite land on Markle as constructive criticism. According to Express, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry live in the same Montecito, California neighborhood as Katy Perry and partner Orlando Bloom. Per the report, Bloom sympathizes with the couple, who stepped down from official royal duties, and has reached out to report "anything suspicious" in their neighborhood. However, the report states that things aren't quite so chipper between Markle and Perry. "Meghan is keenly aware of a comment that Katy Perry made in 2018 about her wedding dress and is notorious for holding a grudge," shared a source. They added that Perry's comment came when "Meghan felt under siege at that time and was overwhelmed by arguments with staff, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Thomas Markle."
Queen Elizabeth may not have been a fan of Meghan Markle's wedding dress
Katie Perry isn't the only person who wasn't a fan of Meghan Markle's dress. Apparently the late Queen Elizabeth II didn't think that Meghan Markle's white dress was appropriate, given that she'd been married once prior, according to "The New Royals," a book authored by royal expert Katie Nicholl. "The Queen was surprised that Meghan wore pure white on her wedding day," wrote Nichols. "Perhaps it's a generational thing, but she believes if you've been married before, you wear off-white on your wedding day, which is what the Duchess of Cornwall did," as reported by Daily Mail.
Despite the late monarch's reported reservations about Markle's dress, she obviously signed off on the dress. According to Metro, Markle had to get the queen's approval ahead of her wedding day, a tradition that's supposedly more of a "nice courtesy" than a hard-set rule. Per the report, the queen also had to approve of Kate Middleton's wedding dress before she married Prince William in 2011.
