Celebs Who Split Without Anyone Noticing
Hollywood has no shortage of highly publicized and messy breakups. It seems like everyday there's a new split that sends the internet into a state of disbelief and utter despair (Chris Pratt and Anna Faris, anyone?) But while fans were busy mourning the loss of their favorite couples, other Tinseltown breakups flew under the radar. Let's take a look at some of the celebrity splits that went largely unnoticed.
Dominic Sherwood and Sarah Hyland
When Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and Bachelorette alum Wells Adams got together in November 2017, many fans were thrilled. Hyland and Adams, with their upbeat and social media savvy personalities, appeared to be extremely compatible on paper.
The only problem with the seemingly perfect love match? Some fans wondered what the heck happened to Hyland's boyfriend of two years, actor Dominic Sherwood.
Hyland wasn't two-timing. She quietly split with Sherwood in August 2017, when most people were busy enjoying the end of the summer. Not much is known about their breakup, except that it seemed totally peaceful. A source told E! News: "It's genuinely mutual and amicable and they truly remain friends."
Keegan-Michael Key and Cynthia Blaise
When Key & Peele star Keegan-Michael Key announced his engagement to producer Elisa Pugliese in November 2017, fans were ecstatic about the news. Key is a beloved comedian, and engagements during the holiday season can be really fun.
In a tweet confirming the good news, Key gushed: "[Pugliese] shows me every day that each one of us has the ability to help make the world a better place. I'm the luckiest man ever. She said yes!"
While most fans were celebrating the happy news, others were asking about Key's 17-year marriage to dialect voice coach Cynthia Blaise.
It turns out Key filed for divorce from Blaise on Dec. 31, 2015, but their split wasn't finalized until Nov. 7, 2017, according to People. Most people probably didn't notice the breakup because of how long it took to process, and due to the fact that Key and Blaise are fairly private people.
Regardless, Key certainly wasted no time making a splash about his post-divorce plans.
FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson
FKA Twigs (real name Tahliah Barnett) and Robert Pattinson's breakup largely flew under the radar because it was so confusing and hard to follow.
For starters, Twigs and Pattinson never publicly settled on a wedding date after they got engaged in April 2015, which made it difficult for fans to keep track of their relationship status. Additionally, these two were rarely photographed together during their three-year relationship, and their desire to keep things private caused some fans to lose interest in their romance.
When Pattinson told shock jock Howard Stern in July 2017 that he was "kind of" engaged to Twigs (via People), the pair's remaining supporters pretty much gave up trying to figure out what was going on between the two.
It's really no surprise that when Pattinson and Twigs broke up for real in October 2017 (via The Sun,) many followers were too fed up to notice. In fact, most fans didn't bat an eye when Twigs was spotted with a French model in Ibiza just a few months before the reported split from Pattinson (via the Daily Mail.)
Fred Armisen and Elisabeth Moss
When you're a celebrity involved in a nasty breakup, you tend to keep your split on the DL so you don't have to talk about it in interviews. Case in point: when The Handmaid's Tale star Elisabeth Moss quietly filed for divorce from Portlandia actor Fred Armisen in 2010, just eight short months after they got hitched.
At the time, a source told People that Moss and Armisen's busy lives were to blame for the divorce, and the two went on to date other people without much fanfare. But years later, folks started to gossip about their curious breakup, and Moss made headlines in 2014 when she described her relationship with Armisen as "extremely traumatic and awful and horrible."
Anthony Kalabretta and Lucy Hale
As dedicated as Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale's fans might be, they didn't seem to catch wind of her breakup with musician Anthony Kalabretta in May 2017.
For starters, Hale and Kalabretta were never showy with their relationship. Although the two did post about each other on social media from time to time, they never attended a red carpet event or premiere throughout their two years together.
Consequently, when Hale and Kalabretta weren't spotted out together in a while, no real red flags were raised. People only became suspicious about the pair's status when Hale and Kalabretta quietly began unfollowing each other on social media and deleting photos of each other on their respective Instagram accounts (via the Daily Mail.)
To PLL fans dismay, Hale never addressed the break up publicly. At the time of this writing, all that's known about this parting of ways is that Hale had truly cared for Kalabretta. "She became a homebody when they were dating," a source told Entertainment Tonight. "They stayed in a lot. She really loved him."
Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton
Many fans were shocked to learn that director Tim Burton and actress Helena Bonham Carter ended their 13-year relationship a year before they announced it to the public in December 2014. It takes a lot of planning and tight lips to keep a major Hollywood breakup secret, and many wondered how Burton and Carter pulled the whole thing off without anybody noticing.
Although it's not known why or how Burton and Carter supposedly kept their breakup under wraps for so long, a source told Page Six, "Tim and Helena have been living separate lives for [more than] a year, and since they separated, they have both had other lovers."
Bill Hader and Maggie Carey
Comedian Bill Hader stunned fans when he split from his wife, director Maggie Carey, after 11 years together. There was never any hint of trouble in the seemingly solid marriage until the breakup news broke right before Christmas 2017. People later reported that Hader and Carey had been separated since July 2017.
It's probably fair to speculate they kept their breakup private for the sake of their three young kids, Hayley, Hannah, and Harper. In 2014, Hader said about his life as a dad (via E! Online): "It's hard, it's great, it's beautiful. I don't sleep."
At this time of this writing, Hader and Carey are both reportedly single.
Cara Delevingne and St. Vincent
Cara Delevingne and St. Vincent (real name Annie Clark) really kept fans on their toes throughout their two-year romance. On some days there were engagement rumors, and other days, media outlets reported that the two had ended their long-distance relationship.
Fans only realized the couple had split for good when Clark was spotted out on a date with Twilight star Kristen Stewart in October 2016, according to Us Weekly. Many people were scratching their heads over Stewart and Clark's new romance, mainly because no one knew that the singer was even on the market.
As for when Clark and Delevingne actually split, a source told The Sun they parted ways in August 2016, just a few months before her romance with Stewart. The insider added, "Cara and Annie still care about each other, but pressures of the long-distance romance just became too much."
Milo Ventimiglia and Alexis Bledel
When Gilmore Girls debuted its revival in November 2016, a new generation of viewers learned that two of the show's main cast members, Alexis Bledel and Milo Ventimiglia, had dated once upon time.
Although many older viewers already knew this exciting tidbit of info, younger fans understandably wanted to know everything about Bledel and Ventimiglia's three and a half year relationship, including when and why they broke up.
Not much is known about this couple's demise. In fact, details about Bledel and Ventimiglia's relationship are so scant, it almost seems like the whole romance never even happened. The only confirmation of the breakup was a vague statement Ventimiglia's rep gave to People in 2006: "He is currently single."
Shortly after the super private split, Ventimiglia began dating his much younger Heroes co-star, Hayden Panettiere. Those two called it quits in 2009, according to People.
As for Bledel, she never released a statement about the low-key breakup. The actress married actor Vincent Kartheiser in 2014, and the couple welcomed a son together a few years later, according to E! News.
