Celebs Whose Families Hated Their Spouse
Family drama is incredibly stressful, especially when it involves your spouse. Relatives ragging on your significant other can force you to choose sides, and constantly playing peacemaker gets old quick. Unfortunately for these celebrities, it's a dilemma they know all too well.
Donnie Wahlberg
There have been ongoing rumors that Donnie Wahlberg's famous fam doesn't care for his wife, outspoken radio personality Jenny McCarthy.
The rumor mill reached a fever pitch in 2014 when Donnie's brother, fellow actor Mark Wahlberg, skipped his brother's nuptials. Although Mark claimed he didn't go to the wedding because it fell on the same day as his daughter's birthday, fans still speculated that something was amiss...and "something" was the bride.
A year later, Mark's wife, Rhea Wahlberg, supposedly joined the reported feud. Shortly after McCarthy debuted pink hair, Rhea tweeted (via The Boston Globe): "Don't u think after age 25 it might be strange for a woman to dye her hair pink, purple, green or any color of that sort??? #needattention?" Yikes!
David Foster
Fans of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills might be surprised to learn that David Foster's kids never really took to his ex-wife, Yolanda Foster. Although Foster's children kept their distaste for Yolanda on the DL while they were married, they let their true feelings be known when the divorce was final.
In June 2016, Foster's daughters, Erin and Sara Foster, talked to radio personality Jenny McCarthy about their feelings regarding Yolanda's struggle with Lyme disease.
Sara told McCarthy (via E! News): "Only [Yolanda] knows her journey, but what I will say is if you're capable of continuing to be on a reality show, you're not dying. Let's be honest."
Erin added (via Elle): "Again, we are not doctors. We have no idea what goes on, and we don't wish anyone ill will of any kind. However, I think that from everyone's experience, if anyone's ever known someone who is very sick, who has cancer, who is dying, who's in the last year of their life, the only thing that person gives a s**t about is getting through the day and being treated normally. No one wants everyone to know how sick they are and everyone to see how much they're struggling, and when that seems to be the focus, making everyone see how sick you are, that's just confusing to someone who's trying to be supportive."
Kim Kardashian
It's no secret that the Kardashian and Jenner families never liked Kim Kardashian's ex-husband, Kris Humphries. From the jump, Kardashian's loved ones seemed suspicious of Humphries' motives, and they openly disapproved of his personality. Momager Kris Jenner even tried to dissuade her daughter from going through with the August 2011 wedding, telling Kim (via Bravo TV): "This isn't it for you. Why don't you go away and I'll handle it?"
Khloe Kardashian admitted that she also talked to her sister before the big day, telling Kim (via Us Weekly): "He's a f**king loser. Why are you marrying this f**king dog?"
When Kim divorced Humphries 72 days after their wedding, many followers claimed the nuptials were nothing more than a publicity stunt, but Kourtney Kardashian came to her sister's defense. Kourtney slammed Humphries, telling late night host David Letterman (via the Daily Mail): "I think if she was going to do it for publicity, she'd pick someone that people knew."
Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney's marriage to model Heather Mills was dominated by tension and family drama. The musician's daughter, Stella McCartney, reportedly had serious issues with her stepmother throughout the relationship.
Stella and Mills' tension supposedly reached a fever pitch in 2006, after Mills allegedly insinuated that McCartney was physically abusive to his late wife, Linda McCartney. During an argument, Stella reportedly told her dad (via the Independent): "I told you she was a b**ch. Why did you marry her? She's been a manipulative cow from day one. The cow won't be happy until she destroys all of us and our memories of our mother."
Of course, there are two sides to every story, and according to Mills, Stella is the reason her marriage to The Beatles star ended. Mills told Extra, "Every single week Stella tried to break up our marriage. She was so jealous... Stella wasn't interested in her dad's happiness. I can't protect her any longer... she's done some evil, evil things... we found out she scraped my face out [of] a photo when they were in [a] psychiatric session together."
Cynthia Bailey
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Cynthia Bailey struggled for years to make her loved ones like her ex-husband, Peter Thomas. Unfortunately, Bailey's efforts seemed doomed from the get-go. Her sister and her mom actually tried to hide her marriage license just hours before her 2010 wedding!
Although Bailey's family couldn't stop the nuptials, her sister, Malorie Bailey Massie, continued to cause problems for the pair. "I love my sister very much, but her interference with my marriage is a problem," Bailey said (via Reality Tea.) "I appreciate her concern, but at 44, I think I got this. I have no desire to make choices for Mal regarding her marriage, and I deserve the same respect."
Caitlyn Jenner
Caitlyn and Kris Jenner's marriage was rocky in more ways than one, but it appears that Jenner's kids with his ex-wives, Linda Thompson and Chrystie Crownover, never approved of the reality TV matriarch.
"The tension was real as far as growing up not knowing her intentions, who she is, there was obviously just drama between the family and parents," Caitlyn's son, Brody Jenner, told the New York Daily News.
To make matters even more uncomfortable, the Olympian's mom, Esther Jenner, deeply disliked Kris, too. Esther told the Daily Mail in 2014: "She could insult you with a big smile on her face, I know. What do you do with a person like that? You're going to avoid them if possible. She was backstabbing as far as my grandchildren were concerned, and that is something I can't stand. She's domineering–it's do it her way, or there's no way. I had very little to do with Kris. I stayed away from her as much as I could."
Jenelle Evans
Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans has had a very difficult time managing her mom's disdain for husband David Eason.
In fact, Jenelle's mother, Barbara Evans, has so many issues with Eason that she refused to attend her daughter's wedding in September 2017 because she just couldn't stomach the groom.
"David has alienated her from me," Barbara said on an episode of Teen Mom 2 (via PopCulture.) "She has chosen David over her own family and that's just how it is."
Lamar Odom
Lamar Odom's two kids, Destiny and Lamar Odom Jr., didn't take to their dad's famous ex-wife, Khloe Kardashian.
Although Lamar Jr. has tried to keep relations civil, Destiny chose to vocalize her true feelings on her Ask.fm page. "No one thought they were going to last, so honestly, who (cares)," she said (via the Daily Mail.)
Destiny also didn't approve of her step-mom rushing to her dad's side following his near-fatal overdose in 2015. "A lot of people in our circle were confused," Destiny told People. "Their relationship is very toxic."
David Beador
David Beador's family drama played out on multiple seasons of The Real Housewives of Orange County, and it was no secret that his family loathed his estranged wife, Shannon Beador. David's mom and sister were supposedly even friends with his mistress. To add insult to injury, David's mother told Shannon that she "pushed" him to have an affair (via the Daily Mail.)
Shannon opened up about her mother-in-law in a 2016 blog post (via Bravo): "A year and a half ago, my mother-in-law told my daughters that I wasn't a good mother among other things," Shannon wrote. "They were very upset because no child wants to hear negative things about their mother."
Brad Pitt
When Brad Pitt started dating his Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Angelina Jolie, fans wondered what his family thought of his new lady love. Their curiosity was understandable, especially since Pitt's ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, was reportedly close with his parents, Bob and Jane Pitt.
An insider told Now Magazine that Jane preferred Aniston to Jolie. "Jane's seen, first hand, how difficult Angelina is. She never comes to visit the family in Missouri and is always prickly on the rare occasions they have got together," the source claimed. "Jennifer was the total opposite—charming, friendly and the perfect daughter-in-law. She always made time to be an active part of the family, whereas Angie just turns her nose up."
A source told Radar Online, "Jane tried so hard to bond with Angelina and welcome her into the family but nothing ever seemed to work."
