Where Does Dave Chappelle Live And How Big Is His House?
There's no denying Dave Chappelle's success as a comedian. Popular in the noughties due to his series The Chappelle Show, the celeb continues to dominate the stand-up scene these days with his whopping five Netflix deals. While it's pretty obvious Chappelle cashed in plenty from the streaming giant, he's also not your typical, Hollywood-loving celebrity.
Packing up his bags and family, the Half Baked star suddenly ditched a reported $50 million deal to continue on with The Chappelle Show in 2006 — and moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio instead. "I'm interested in the kind of person I've got to become," the comedian dished to Time in 2005. "I want to be well rounded and the industry is a place of extremes. I want to be well balanced. I've got to check my intentions, man."
While it may seem weird to imagine such a famous celeb living in a remote location, it turns out that Chappelle and his wife Elaine Chappelle love it. "I used to be cable's hottest star and now I'm just a Yellow Springs guy," the star gushed at a blues and jazz festival in his community (via USA Today). "Turns out you don't need $50 million to live around these parts, just a nice smile and a kind way about you. You guys are the best neighbors ever."
So, are there any other details regarding this reclusive comedian's digs? Let's take a look at where Chappelle lives and how big his house is.
Dave Chappelle is happy living away from Hollywood
When Dave Chappelle suddenly left Tinseltown in the aughts to live in Yellow Springs, it seemed like an incredibly bold move. In fact, many of his industry peers and tabloids thought he was either spending his fortune or excessively falling to the dark side of Hollywood. "There were things that overwhelmed me," he mused to Time in 2005. "But not in the way that people are saying. I haven't spent any of the money. All that stuff about partying and taking crack is not true. Why do I live on a farm in Ohio? To support my partying lifestyle?"
So, what is Chappelle's Ohio farm actually like? According to Velvet Ropes, the pad is pretty modest by celebrity standards, coming in at 3,154 square feet with three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Another perk of the property? It sits on 39-acre farmland with a "private, gated entrance." The cost of such an abode? It's currently estimated to be worth $277,330.
It turns out, Chappelle has emotional ties to Ohio that trace back years. Speaking with Hot 97 in 2017, the comedian dished, "[My dad] got real sick in '98 so I would drive back and forth ... and there were no good hotels [in Ohio], so I bought a house there. And at a certain point, I moved into the house. And when I quit [The Chappelle Show], I moved back into the house."
Dave Chappelle makes a great house guest, too
While he's not entertaining people on his sprawling property or hosting events in Ohio, Dave Chappelle makes an excellent guest, too. During their Architectural Digest interview in February 2020, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West gushed about the comedian as their favorite house guest. "I love when Dave comes over," Kardashian beamed, while West quipped, "But he ain't going to put his feet on our couch, I'll tell you that!"
Not just a great house guest, it sounds like Chappelle is filled with neighborly love as well, since he's an active member of his community. According to NBC, in 2016, the Sticks & Stones star hosted a barnyard "Juke Joint" concert. Then in 2017, he found himself speaking out at a village council meeting on progressive policing, as revealed by the Chicago Tribune.
Although Chappelle seems to be loving his life off the grid, who knows if he'll come back to Hollywood. In 2017, the comedian picked up his first-ever Emmy for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live. Speaking to TMZ about his win, Chappelle admitted, "It's nice to be recognized by people in the industry that I thought long ago forgot about me. So this belongs to everybody that didn't let 'em forget."
