Taylor Swift Secretly Wrote Calvin Harris & Rihanna's Hit Song
Now, here's a twist we didn't see coming: TMZ reported on July 13, 2016 that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris' relationship fell apart due to drama surrounding his hit song with Rihanna, "This Is What You Came For." Sources allege Swift actually wrote the lyrics to the song and Harris loved it so much, they agreed to record a demo together in the studio.
How did Swift not wind up on the final track? According to TMZ, they were too worried the song would be "overshadowed" by media attention if the press and fans found out they had collaborated together as a couple. Instead, Swift allegedly used the pseudonym "Nils Sjoberg" on the credits and kept the publishing rights to the song.
That plan worked just fine, until Harris gave an interview to radio host Ryan Seacrest claiming he and Swift hadn't spoken about collaborating together and that he couldn't see it ever happening. According to TMZ sources, Swift was "hurt" by Harris' response, and the relationship disintegrated from that moment on.
The news comes about a month and a half after the couple confirmed their split. Sources tell TMZ the information is hitting the press now because Swift's squad is "sick of Calvin trashing Taylor and feel he should be thanking her for quietly giving him a smash hit."
Harris is singing a very different tune. He took to Twitter on July 13, 2016 with a string of candid posts. "I wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals," he said, "And initially she wanted it kept secret, hence the pseudonym." Like a gentleman, he acknowledged Swift's talents, calling her an "amazing lyric writer." Then Harris let it fly: "I figure if you're happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do" he said. "I know you're off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I'm not that guy, sorry. I won't allow it." The "Katy" reference is a nod to Swift's "Bad Blood" song, which is wildly believed to be about singer Katy Perry.
"This Is What You Came For" was released on April 29, 2016 and quickly climbed to no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Whatever the case, Swift appears to have moved on from the drama surrounding the song. According to People magazine, sources claim her budding relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston is the "real deal." Us Weekly alleges Hiddleston is planning to propose to her soon, even though they've been dating for only about a month. "She would definitely say yes," the Us Weekly source said.
