Ranking The Best To Worst Dressed Stars At The 2018 Oscars
The stars gathered to celebrate the year's finest in film at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 4, 2018. But, while an Oscar may have been the night's most coveted prize, celebrities may have also been eyeing the unofficial award for best dressed. Donning gowns of every color and sharp suits that were sure to make fans' jaws drop, actors and A-listers took to the red carpet to debut their chic ensembles. Unfortunately for some, not all looks impressed. Rather than earn top scores from critical stylists, there were quite a few stars whose expensive fashions did very little flatter them. These unusual outfit choices — which included some questionable cuts and odd layers — raised eyebrows and flat out made viewers at home cringe.
From those nominated to those just helping to honor their peers and the Hollywood elite, here are the best and worst dressed guests at the 2018 Academy Awards.
Betty Gabriel
Actress Betty Gabriel stunned everyone when she stepped out on the red carpet wearing a gorgeous teal number. The gown, which featured a plunging naval-deep neckline and accents of gold, was designed by Tony Ward (via Just Jared). The floral embellishments around the shoulders, the waist, and the semi-sheer long train proved to be risks worth taking. Gabriel wore her long, curly hair down in a half-pulled back style and painted on a rose-gold lip, leading us to believe that she must be some kind of royalty.
Surprisingly, Gabriel wasn't even nominated for an individual award that night, though her movie, the psychological thriller Get Out (in which she played Georgina), did received nominations for several awards. Still, with a look like this, Gabriel has proven that she more than has enough starpower to light up the big screen all on her own. Now, let's get this woman some leading roles — we need to see her at more award shows in the future.
Jennifer Lawrence
The Red Sparrow star arrived at the 2018 Oscars in a shiny Dior column dress. The incredibly detailed metallic number hugged Jennifer Lawrence around the bodice and waist before tapering off at the hips. The floor-length stunner was held up by two skinny spaghetti straps and feature a sweetheart neckline. As noted by Vogue, Lawrence's Maria Grazia Chiuri-designed dress appeared to draw inspiration from chainmail, which made the feminist actress' choice seem like the glam wardrobe of a warrior woman heading into battle, driven to smash the glass ceiling — and the whole dang patriarchy. And, given the current climate in Hollywood, Lawrence's fashion choice made perfect sense.
While a gown with chainmail influences could quickly become costume-like, Lawrence balanced the ensemble out right. She kept it light on accessories, donning a single sparkly bracelet. She also opted for loose waves, a smokey eye, and an orange-hued lipstick, adding some personality to the whole look.
Margot Robbie
Australian beauty Margot Robbie was one of several Academy Awards attendees who wore white to the big event. And while Jane Fonda, Timothée Chalamet, and Janet Mock all looked amazing, Robbie really wowed with her white hot Chanel gown (via the Daily Mail). The dress featured off-the-shoulder straps with beaded embellishments, a subtle pleated skirt, and a train. Robbie complimented the look with a clear, gem-like evening bag and a pair of sparkly earrings. The actress, who was nominated for her film I, Tonya, kept her makeup rather natural looking and finished off the entire look with a short bob, which will surely serve as inspiration for women heading to the hair salon for a fresh change for spring 2018.
Unfortunately, the Oscars didn't go without incident for poor Robbie. According to People magazine, she suffered a wardrobe malfunction during the night when one of the straps of her gown apparently broke. Luckily, however, Robbie was able to get her hands on a sewing kit and, soon enough, her gown was as good as new.
Chadwick Boseman
Though most of the men at the Oscars looked dapper, Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman stood out from the rest with his all-black ensemble, which featured a heavily embellished jacket. As Vogue described, Boseman rocked a Givenchy topcoat with what appeared to be silver embroidery. The luxe look may have been deliberately chosen with Boseman's Marvel character — T'Challa, King of Wakanda — in mind. Need more proof of purpose than Boseman's royal-looking suit? Well, while on the red carpet before the awards show, Boseman posed with his arms crossed over his chest — a move known as a kind of salutation in the Black Panther movie. Plus, Boseman also shouted out, "Wakanda forever," during a pre-show interview. So... there.
Boseman, however, wasn't the only Black Panther star who dressed to impress on the 2018 Oscars red carpet. He only narrowly beat out his co-stars, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Daniel Kaluuya, for a spot on our best dressed list.
Gina Rodriguez
Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez proved that she could rub elbows with the best of them at the Academy Awards, as she walked the red carpet in a beautiful Zuhair Murad gown (via The Hollywood Reporter). The champagne-colored dress boasted a deep-V neckline, a sheer skirt, and a cinched waist. Rodriguez, who made the transition to blockbuster films with the 2018 movie Annihilation alongside Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson, kept the gown from feeling too princess-y with a middle part and a sleek low ponytail. She also wore minimal accessories, donning only a pair of earrings and ... an engagement ring?
As noted by Brides, Rodriguez had an eye-catching new piece of bling on the ring finger of her left hand, leading some to believe that the actress may have secretly gotten engaged. To add to that theory, Rodriguez had arrived at the 2018 Oscars with her boyfriend, Joe Locicero, affectionately posing with him for the cameras. So are the two lovebirds preparing to tie the knot? At the time of this writing, neither Rodriguez nor Locicero have commented on the engagement rumors.
Emma Stone
Battle of the Sexes star Emma Stone took a major fashion risk on the Oscars red carpet. Rather than slip on a sparkly gown, as she's done in the past, Stone decided to put on some pants instead. And while wearing bottoms to an award show as a woman isn't groundbreaking — she's done it before at the 2015 Golden Globes (via E! News) — it's how the actress paired the pants that's got everybody talking.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Stone donned a Louis Vuitton pantsuit, consisting of black pants and a silky red blazer tied together with a pink belt. The color combo, while unexpected, is a fun choice for the otherwise stiff Oscars affair. However, some fans felt that the suit was just a bit too casual for the high-class event.
"I hate Emma Stone's look so much. [It's] like she slept in and forgot the Oscars were tonight," one Twitter user wrote. Another tweeted that Stone looked like she was "at a garden party," not the Oscars.
Kelly Ripa
The morning talk show host served up a new look at the 90th Academy Awards. She wore a black strapless Christian Siriano ball gown — from the designer's Spring 2018 collection (via PopSugar UK) — and she looked amazing. But what initially seemed like the perfect wardrobe choice for Kelly Ripa quickly went south when the pint-sized star turned around. Hidden behind Ripa was a bright punch of color. Tied up in a backside bow detail and falling in a train behind her, pink, green, and blue fabric poured from the otherwise stunning dress, reminding us of the Powerpuff Girls which we doubt was Ripa's intention.
Still, Ripa looked gorgeous with her blonde locks curled just so. And, for what it's worth, she paired the gown the best way she could have with a classy pair of earrings and a matching necklace.
She also had the best accessory of the night — her handsome husband, Mark Consuelos (via Entertainment Tonight).
Salma Hayek
Let's get one thing straight before we go any further: Salma Hayek is absolutely stunning. She could wear nearly anything and still look amazing. That said, her 2018 Oscars look was less than stellar. To the biggest night in film, Hayek wore a custom Gucci gown and Harry Winston jewelry, as reported by Just Jared. And while the purple color of the dress complimented Hayek's complexion and dark hair, the other details of the outfit did nothing for her.
In addition to the awkward fit of the gown's bodice, the different components of the dress — the embellishments and the tiered layers — distracted from the actress' natural beauty, doing nothing to flatter her gorgeous appearance. Add the statement jewelry draped from shoulder to shoulder, which the Daily Mail likened to "military epaulets," and the whole ensemble was just way too much. And, sadly, Hayek's too-dark lip didn't help matters one bit.
Whoopi Goldberg
It's not every day that you see The View co-host and bonafide movie star Whoopi Goldberg in a dress. It's just simply not her style. But the impossible happened at the 2018 Oscars when Goldberg walked the red carpet in an off-the-shoulder gown with a long, full skirt. While we can appreciate the bold green, purple, and yellow colors on the actress, the rest of the look didn't do all that much for her — and it definitely didn't keep her off of our worst dressed list.
According to Page Six, Goldberg wore the custom ball gown, in part, because of designer Christian Siriano's promises. "He said, 'I'm going to make it so you'll be comfortable,'" Goldberg said during her walk on the Academy Awards' red carpet, "so it has pockets." And while all women love them some pockets on their designer duds, the rest of the ensemble — including the matching belt, the pendant necklace, and the sunglasses — were a major letdown.
Lindsey Vonn
Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn stepped out on the red carpet in a black gown, but the neutral-colored dress was anything but a safe choice. The dress featured clashing details, including mesh, fringe, and lots and lots of tulle. Vonn, unfortunately, only made matters worse with a tight updo, dark eye makeup, and a thick diamond choker. We get that Vonn was likely aiming for an enchanting Hollywood look, but her award show attire instead appeared more goth than glam.
Vonn's decision to don the disappointing dress may have had to do with her nerves from attending one of Tinseltown's biggest events of the year, despite not being a part of the entertainment industry.
"I'm out of my comfort zone," the professional skier told People magazine. "The Oscars are such a big deal. I'm trying to soak it all in and not mess it up."
Poor Vonn. She clearly wanted to make a good impression with Hollywood's elite.
St. Vincent
The "Los Ageless" singer is no stranger to shocking styles, but her Oscars red carpet look may have been the worst yet (via Billboard). And — sorry, St. Vincent — it was our pick for the worst of the night. The musician, whose real name is Annie Clark, arrived at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre wearing a Saint Laurent design. Though she may have intended for a chic get-up, St. Vincent just looked strange instead. As Bustle noted, Cara Delevingne's ex-girlfriend wore a super short bodysuit that pretty much made her look like she'd left her pants at home. The design featured a huge poufy sleeve — just one — and an awkward bow detail around the waist.
With the one sleeve, an odd floral headpiece, and earrings on only one ear, St. Vincent's ensemble looked like a half-finished production. If only she'd worn the outfit she donned during her Oscars performance of "Mystery of Love" with Sufjan Stevens...
